EndyMed Answers Questions About NEWA At-Home Skin-Tightening

May 25, 2020 · 10 Comments

When an at-home use device promises skin-tightening, we’re intrigued. When the device is from ENDYMED, makers of professional skin-tightening equipment for medical offices, you have our full attention.  Got NEWA questions? Us too. And NEWA answered them for us. Read our interview with NEWA, the device for at-home skin-tightening.

The Need For NEWA

Skin-tightening from home is an appealing prospect. It is easy, discrete, and works on your schedule.  Several devices claim to provide skin tightening.

But not all technologies are created equal and therefore don’t deliver consistent results.

NEWA was developed by ENDYMED – a global leader in medical aesthetics, and the 3DEEP radiofrequency energy that powers the NEWA is the same professional medical technology used by dermatologists and clinics worldwide.

NEWA technology has been clinically proven by over 40 independent clinical studies that set it apart from other devices.

But before you buy any anti-aging device, how do you know it will work?

Your Newa Questions Answered

Joseph Lepselter, their VP of Clinical Affairs graciously answered Style Chicks’ questions about NEWA:

How does RF (Radio Frequency) technology work?

“NEWA, is powered by our professional medical grade 3DEEP radiofrequency technology which is the same technology that powers our ENDYMED treatment platforms used by Dermatologists worldwide.

Our 3DEEP RF technology delivers controlled energy deep into the skin tissue, reaching the dermis skin layer, stimulating the natural production of new healthier collagen and elastin fibers. Collagen and elastin fibers are essential components of the skin which gives your skin shape, lift and support. The collagen fibers are responsible for skin strength and tone. The elastin fibers allow skin flexibility and elasticity.”

How does the patented 3DEEP technology produce collagen in the skin?

“The 3DEEP technology cause microscopic thermal wound that heats the dermal collagen, which stimulates wound healing, dermal remodeling and new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid formation.”

What kinds of improvements can NEWA users expect?

“NEWA is clinically proven to increase collagen in the skin by an average of 36% which results in a visible reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles and an improvement in skin texture and firmness.

The results build gradually because the body is actually being “trained” to produce higher levels of collagen and elastin, which is why our recommended treatment protocol for the first month is 4-5 treatments. After that, you can move down to maintenance treatment 2-3 times a week. The results are long lasting and accumulative which means they get better over time.”

What areas can the NEWA treat?

“Our recommended treatment areas are the upper cheeks (which extends to the crows’ feet area), lower cheeks/jawline, and under the chin (turkey waddle area).

To treat around the eyes, you must treat the skin over bony areas only, be careful not to get too close to the eyes and not to treat over the eyelids.”

The NEWA website shows the before/after results of areas such as the forehead and throat. Are these also treatable areas?

“I don’t believe we have photos of the throat area but rather under the chin/upper neck area. That area has been clinically tested and responds very well to RF skin tightening.

The forehead was not one of the areas that were clinically tested but we do have NEWA users that treat their forehead with great results.”

[Editor’s note: He is correct. The photo we perceived as throat improvement, upon closer inspection, was indeed the lift and tightening of the upper neck/chin/turkey waddle area. This gave an appearance to us of improved draping of the entire neck and throat area skin.]

What age group benefits the most from using NEWA?

“We tend to see more dramatic results with the 35-65 year-old age group.”

How does NEWA compare with in-office procedures such as Thermage, Ultralift, or Thermatite?  How does it compare to invasive procedures?

“The technology behind NEWA is widely considered safer and more effective than any other RF technology available today, whether that be a home use device or an in-office treatment like Thermage.

This is because our RF technology is multi-source, phase controlled RF which means that it’s more efficient at focusing the RF energy to the exact target area which provides better results than bi-polar or mono-polar RF technologies.

Compared to invasive procedures, the upside to NEWA is that it’s safer (non-invasive), there’s no downtime or bruising, and the results are more natural looking. The downside is that the results are also more subtle compared to a surgical facelift.

Another point to consider when comparing to any in-office procedure, whether it be surgical or non-invasive is the difference in price. These procedures cost thousands of dollars while NEWA is a fraction of the cost.”

Any special tips or tricks for NEWA users?

“Yes. Stick to our treatment protocol.

Our treatment protocol is the result of numerous clinical studies that all indicated that the first month of treatment with NEWA is the key to optimal skin tightening results.

For the first month you’ll want to do between 4-5 treatments per week. Make sure that your NEWA is blinking green halfway through your treatment because that’s the indication that the heat level is effective.

After the first month, you can move down to maintenance treatments 2-3 times a week.  But trust on this – the first month protocol is something you want to follow through on.”

How does the NEWA activator gel enhance the treatment?

“Working in tandem with your NEWA device, it conducts the RF energy into the dermis while keeping the surface of the skin cool to avoid discomfort or overheating.”

Use the Lift Activator gel with the Newa device

NEWA comes with the NEWA Lift Activator Gel:  Use the Lift Activator gel with the Newa device

Which is better: moving the head in bigger or smaller diameter circles? Faster or slower rotation?

“Smaller diameter circles with slower rotation; however, as the area of concern is smaller, the movement should be faster. The key is to make sure you’re reaching optimal heating levels. Keep and eye on the blinking LED light on the top of the device. When it turns green, that means you’ve hit your goal.”

The LED indicator light will turn green during use.

The LED indicator light will turn green during use.

Is there anything else NEWA users should know?

“We always recommend taking a photo of yourself before you start using NEWA and then another after 1 month. That way you can compare your before and after and keep motivated to maintain your results. It’s easy to overlook gradual changes for the better but photos don’t lie.”

Thanks to Endymed and Joseph for taking the time to share this very helpful NEWA intel with us!

Ask The Expert: Doctor Sharon Wong from Get Ahead of Hair Loss

September 17, 2019 · 12 Comments

Since we launched our blog in 2007, Style Chicks has covered women’s hair loss. It is a subject that isn’t openly discussed. This leads to viable solutions not being considered for both men and women who are suffering hair loss who do not need to be.

That is why Doctor Sharon Wong founded Get Ahead of Hair Loss. This annual conference is a public education event that brings together leading experts from the UK in the field of hair loss.

Get Ahead Of Hair Loss Speakers

Get Ahead Of Hair Loss Speakers

We had the opportunity to ask Doctor Wong a few questions:

1) From your standpoint, what is the most exciting new development in the fight against hair loss?

For me, cell regeneration technology will transform the way hair loss will be treated in the near future, regardless of the cause of hair loss. There are a number of different techniques but essentially they all involve harvesting cells which have the ability to form new hair follicles, expanding the number of those cells and reinjecting back into that person’s scalp. These cells could be stem cells or dermal papilla cells from the hair follicle or stem cells derived from fat.

2) What would you say to the women reading this that are experiencing hair loss and feel too embarrassed to talk about it?

Hair loss is common and you are definitely not alone. It is important to recognize that when hair loss is starting to have a negative effect on you/your life then it’s time to do something about it and there is absolutely no shame in having or talking about hair loss. More often than not there will be something that can be done to support someone with hair loss whether this be medical, cosmetic and or psychological support.

Guest Post: Organic, All-Natural, Non-Toxic, Chem-Free. What’s the Difference?

February 12, 2019 · Leave a Comment

Editor’s Note: We are pleased to bring you an informative article by guest blogger Diane Elizabeth of Skin Care Ox!

Green is the new black when it comes to the beauty industry. Green beauty is a popular movement, as many switch to products that are safe, clean, and all-natural.

There are incredible brands who create clean products to exacting standards. But there are also plenty of imposters who claim they do but don’t. So how can you tell them apart? The first step is to unpack the industry’s key buzzwords. This way you understand what they mean and when you can trust them.

Breaking down the buzzwords

Organic, natural, non-toxic, GMO-free. These are some of the most popular buzzwords when it comes to clean beauty. Surprisingly, none of these terms are strictly regulated by the FDA or USDA for cosmetic industry use.

Here’s a breakdown of the most popular buzzwords:

Organic

Organic means produced without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), sewage, ionizing radiation, antibiotics, or growth hormones (1).

To ensure that a product is “organic,” look for a seal from a third-party organic certifying organization, such as the USDA Certified Organic program. If you don’t see the USDA seal, then there is no guarantee that the product meets organic quality standards.

Even if a product is USDA Certified Organic, that doesn’t mean that it contains 100% organic ingredients. In fact, a product can contain as little as 70% organic ingredients and still have the USDA seal. Even with the fancy USDA seal, you’ll still want to read the ingredient labels of organic cosmetics and beauty products.

Here are a few ways to evaluate if products are organic and high quality:

  • How many ingredients are listed as “certified organic”? Which organization certified them?
  • Research all listed non-organic ingredients online—are they safe and clean?
  • Look for a seal from a third-party certifying organization

Natural

The term “natural” is frequently used in the beauty industry. Yet, there are no official regulatory standards to define it. That means that any cosmetic product can claim to be “natural” while still containing synthetic ingredients. The simplest definition for “natural products” are those not containing any synthetic ingredients or additives.

Here are a few tips to identify them:

  • Natural ingredients tend to be easy to read and recognize. If you don’t know one, google it to confirm.
  • Natural ingredients should be at the top of the list on the label, any unnatural ones should be at the end.
  • Look for a seal from a third-party certifying organization

Non-Toxic

Non-toxic means “a substance that is not expected to cause symptoms or be dangerous” to humans or the environment (2). A non-toxic product should not have any ingredients linked to toxic responses in humans. Toxic responses include death, organ failure, reproductive and hormonal disruption, and cancer.

Chem-Free

The term “chemical-free” or “chem-free” is incredibly misleading. Not only is it completely unregulated, but it is also deceptive. All ingredients in a product are technically chemicals, including water! Steer clear of all beauty products marketing themselves as chemical-free.

Hair Loss Awareness Month: Doctor Paul J. McAndrews Interview

August 24, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Style Chicks has been covering advances in Hair Restoration for many years now. Back in 2008, we spoke with Doctor Paul J. McAndrews, a prominent advocate for women with hair loss. We thought in honor of Hair Loss Awareness Month, we would republish his comments.

Interview with

Doctor Paul J. Andrews

Hair Restoration Dermatologist

Roy LichensteinThe Style Chicks are thrilled to have Doctor Paul J. McAndrews as a guest columnist today. Doctor McAndrews is a renown dermatologist who specializes in hair restoration. His technique, The McAndrews Method, blends artistry and surgical skill to restore hairlines that are natural looking and have the highest rate of hair follicle survival and growth. Hair loss is a growing issue for women – even young women. This can result from genetic predisposition, emotional stress, and yes, the toll that styling, coloring, and even hair extensions take on our scalps. The McAndrews Method is an exciting option for those looking for permanent hair restoration.

Who Is a Good Candidate for the McAndrews Method?

Here’s what Doctor McAndrews has to say when we asked him what makes a woman a good candidate for The McAndrews Method:

“To put it simply, expectations. The art and science of Hair Transplantation has improved dramatically in the last ten years. But with all of the technological advances that make the procedure virtually undetectable, the one constant throughout this evolution is that there is a fixed and limited amount of donor hair available to transplant into the thinning areas. Heredity hair loss – also called Androgenetic Alopecia or Female Patterned Hair Loss –affects 1 out of 4 women by the age of 50.

While this is significantly less than men – sixty percent of men will have some level of hair loss by the age of 50 – it’s still a very troubling issue for those women affected. For some women, hair loss can become noticeable as early as their 20’s, but hair loss can start at any age and there is a wide range of hair loss patterns that can occur. Women may lose 50% or more of their hair density before it becomes visibly noticeable. Most women experience diffuse thinning across the top of the scalp, while others actually experience a receding hair line – similar to a man. Some women will have diffuse hair loss all over their entire scalp. I also work with women who have hair loss as a result of cosmetic surgery, such as facelifts and browlifts. When I evaluate a woman for hair transplant, the first thing I must determine is her hair restoration goals and expectations of what can be achieved. Because there is a limited amount of donor hair available, I have to be sure I use this hair as wisely as possible and The McAndrews Method assures this. For some women, there is just not enough donor hair to return the thinning areas to a satisfactory density which means they may still have a “thinning” look. And since there is a limit to the amount of density I can achieve in a single transplant session, the patient may need more than one procedure to reach their desired density. If your expectations are realistic and you understand the limitations to hair restoration, then you will be a good candidate for the McAndrews Method.

It’s also important not to overlook the value of the medical therapies, in particular Rogaine®, in preventing hair loss and in some cases, regrowing hair. For more information, please visit www.McAndrewsMethod.com or call (877) 424-7362.”

We’d like to thank Doctor McAndrews for sharing his expertise! Be sure to visit his website for more information on The McAndrews Method!
