If you are looking for a red lipstick to light up your whole face, try the relatively new Stila Acai Crush Lip and Cheek Stain. With any stain, of course, you will want to practice, but especially so with the Stila Crush line – I love them, but the brush can be a bit unwieldy if you don’t take the time to get the layering down, and once it dries it stays in place no matter what (which is a good thing most of the time, bad if you goof), so precise application is important. Once you get the hang of application, you can do one thin layer for a very wearable ruby red, or two layers for a beautiful bright red. This is two layers pictured below – bold yet wearable.  Find Stila Lip & Cheek Stain in Acai Crush at Sephora.com.

I have a million pretty but empty refillable palettes sitting in my makeup desk draw. Great idea, but it’s so much easier to just throw the product into your bag instead of depotting it. Well, Sephora may have changed that. Check out the SEPHORA COLLECTION Refillable Lipstick Palette - not only does it come with a sleek black palette, but it also comes with everything you need to create your palette, including a silicone melting cup and spatula to get it into the palette wells. Spoon in the lipstick, put the cup in the microwave for 1 minute, and pour into the well, for a professional looking palette! Since you are melting lipsticks, it would be possible to combine colors to get that elusive perfect shade with a little experimentation!

Find the SEPHORA COLLECTION Refillable Lipstick Palette at Sephora.com for only $8.

Just got around to reading the January issues of Allure and Vogue, and one thing stands out – Red Lips are here. A lot of women tend to shy away from red lips, but glossy siren-red lipstick is only one option. Red lips can be natural looking, a quick perk-up, or dramatic. We’ll consider a few options in upcoming articles, but let’s start with the basics – a no-frills, pretty red.

First step, make sure to moisturize your lips first. This is no time to have dry, flaky lips. Try dabbing a little bit of a moisturizing eye cream on your lips – it will smooth them out and plump up any lines. Make sure to get the corners of your lips as well – any lipstick won’t look it’s best if you are dry around the mouth.

Second, a lip brush helps when trying to be precise with red lipstick (otherwise, it looks messy fast…) You may want to practice a few times to get comfortable with a lip brush before you head out for the night. The nice thing about a lip brush is that you can control how much lipstick goes on and in what spots. If you apply thin coats, you can layer until you have the color/consistency you want. Another benefit of thin layers is that you can take it down a notch if you goof – and it’s easier to remove if you stray outside your lip line.

Third, you may want to dab some concealer/foundation around your mouth to put the focus on your lips. If you have highlighter on hand, gently tap some around your cupid’s bow to give a youthful glow to your mouth. To make your lips look fuller, tap a tiny amount in the middle of your lower lip.
Below is a picture of a basic red lip – the lipstick is Liptini’s Bloody Mary Straight Up Lipstick, which is a classic, universally flattering red. This is one coat with a neutral lip liner on the top of the lip for definition. It’s a great red lip for everyday that can be glammed up for a party, and layered for a more dramatic red, which we will be showing in the upcoming days.

Enjoy trying out a few shades to see what works for you – and don’t be afraid of the red lip!

If you want a pinky-lavender hue to your lips to match your Steve Madden LOVELLY Ankle Boots, try Liptini Lip and Cheek Stain in Kirsh – lighly applied, and then add a dab of dusky pink, like Liptini’s Topper Gloss in Ruby Haze.

This tutorial from the good folks at Sephora demonstrates some great tips for a luminous, sultry look. I like that the look is buildable as well – if you apply the eyeshadow after work, and you have a look that transitions easily from day to night. Check it out:

When the sun is beating down on you, it’s hard to want to slick on more than gloss on your lips. But before you reach for that light,  juicy colored gloss, consider the possibility: unless your gloss has a SPF and you reapply consistently, you are subjecting your lips to the equivalent of rubbing baby oil on your skin and laying out in the sun. Add to that the fact that your lips have less natural melanin than the rest of your skin, and you could end up with a lip burn that can only be described as, well, icky. (OK, painful, peeling, blistering, miserable, and many other bad things as well…but you catch my drift…icky)

One option is trying a highly pigmented lipstick or stain. Anything that can provide a physical barrier will stop your lips from burning. Yesterday me and Style Chick Lyn were outside for a bit and both were wearing stains (Lyn wore Liptini Lip Liquer in Kirsh, and I had two coats of Stila Crush Lip and Cheek Stain in Mango), with nary a burn or chap. It works and still feels light!
