Sigi Skin Dew Potion

We frequently refresh our makeup with water, when a waterless formulation could do it so much better. Not only does it refresh makeup, but it treats skin with nourishing ingredients that help skin retain moisture. Let’s take a look at this impressive waterless formulation from Sigi Skin:

 Ingredient Profile

Chamomile flower

Chamomile flower

Chamomile

Chamomile is an antioxidant with potent skin-soothing action. [1]  Chamomile Extract contains flavones that inhibit the production of inflammation, even in deeper skin layers. [2] The apigenin in Chamomile protects the skin barrier [3]. This gentle and hypoallergenic extract soothes skin, heals burns, and is great for helping skin recover. Chamomile Extract also kills the bacteria that causes acne while soothing skin. [4]

aqua 3G

This ingredient is rare in skincare products because it is quite pricey. It contains an algae extract called glyceryl-glucoside. Glyceryl-glucoside works with the Aquaporins, the water conduits of cells. It stops moisture loss.

Maqui Berry

Rich in antioxidants, maqui berry is an excellent anti-aging ingredient. This vibrant purple berry reduces inflammation [5].

Licorice root

Licorice root

licorice

Licorice root contains glabridin, which is a potent antioxidant that soothes skin. It lightens dark circles gently, improves uneven tone and skin redness. it is safe for even sensitive skin. [6]

PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS EXTRACT

PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS EXTRACT on StyleChicks.com

Pelargonium Graveolens Extract

Pelargonium Graveolens Extract is a sweet-scented, rare geranium. It boosts skin elasticity and regulates sebum production. It is a very good antioxidant for the skin. It reduces inflammation by releasing excess water into skin tissue. [7]

The extract is superior to the oil as it removes the possibility of skin irritation due to the fragrance.

Baikal Skullcap

The root of Baikal Skullcap contains baicalin, wogonoside, baicalein, wogonin, and oroxylin A, all of which are flavones, a type of antioxidant that lend color to various plants and are known to be soothing.

Also known as Scutellaria baicalensis root can help skin better withstand environmental aggressors that can worsen the look of many common skin concerns.

Improve Dark Circles with BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector

December 30, 2020 · Leave a Comment

I’ve had dark circles since grade school. When I don’t wear concealer, my dark circles make concerned friends ask if I am sick or tired.  And even with concealer, I can never truly cover them.  If you suffer from dark circles, consider giving BeautyStat Universal Eye Perfector a try.
BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector

BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector

Dark circles are caused by many things: allergies, hereditary, facial structure, and leaking capillaries. Sun damage and discoloration makes all those problems look even worse. Unfortunately, there isn’t much that can help dark circles.

But BeautyStat Universal Eye Perfector combines 5% Vitamin C with Hemp, Green Tea, Hyaluronic Acid, caffeine, and magnolia to get results. You will note this formula does not contain water. Water often appears as the first ingredient in many Vitamin C creams, and can dilute otherwise powerful actives. BeautyStat Universal Eye Perfector is waterless beauty,

In four weeks, 71% of users showed improvement in under-eye discoloration (dark circles)

The Research behind BeautyStat

In an independent clinical study, users were assessed with a Visia CR Imaging System. The results:

  • 90% showed improvement in crow’s feet, fine lines, and wrinkles.
  • 81% showed improvement in skin clarity.
  • 84% had improved skin brightness.
  • 71% showed improvement in under-eye discoloration (dark circles)

BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector Ingredients

How does this dark circle corrector work? Check out the ingredient list:

The Ingredients

Beauty Stat uses a stable form of Vitamin C for superior results

Beauty Stat uses a stable form of Vitamin C for superior results

Vitamin C

A potent 5% pure stabilized vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid). It is fresh and concentrated. L-ascorbic acid is a vitamin C that can be applied as a topical skin treatment.

Vitamin C is the only antioxidant proven to stimulate collagen production.

CBD Oil comes from Cannabis Sativa

Hemp Oil

Hemp Oil

Hemp Seed Oil is high in Omega-3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. It is also high in Vitamins A, E, and D.

Hemp Seed Oil comes from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. Hemp Seed Oil doesn’t contain the same compounds as the plant but has the nutrients and fatty acids.

It reduces acne while hydrating the skin. This helps soothe skin.

Flowering Camellia Sinensis

Flowering Camellia Sinensis or Green Tea

EGCG

EGCG comes from Green Tea. EGCG enables the production of new cells in the epidermis [1]. It contains phenols to strengthen collagen and elastin. This gives skin a bouncy, younger look while delaying wrinkles.

ECCG also soothes skin to help tolerate powerful actives like Vitamin C.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid retains moisture and increases the effectiveness of other ingredients.  Hyaluronic acid holds its’ weight in moisturizer. It holds so much moisture that it instantly plumps fine lines. It plumps the skin, making fine wrinkles and mild sagging temporarily disappear.

Caffeine

Caffeine has antioxidant properties and slows down photo-aging. Caffeine stimulates blood circulation and reduces puffiness.

It is particularly effective on firmness, reducing fine lines and crow’s feet.

Retinol Alternative: Morganna’s Alchemy 24K Glow Super Cream

December 15, 2020 · 4 Comments

Retinol calls to me like a skincare siren. This gold standard skincare ingredient quells acne, age spots, and wrinkles. It leaves skin dewy, refined, refreshed, and younger. But before the dewy, youthy, fabulous skin phase, there’s the dreaded irritated skin phase. And for the sensitive-skinned amongst us, that phase is torture. Many can’t tolerate even buffered Retinols. What options are there for sensitive skins seeking serums? Meet Bakuchiol, a non-irritating, plant-based retinol alternative. It behaves like Retinol without the skin irritation.  An excellent implementation of Bakuchiol comes in 24K Glow Super Cream by Morganna’s Alchemy. Check out the research behind these ingredients and our 24K Glow experience.

Why 24K Glow Super Cream is Special

24K Glow Super Cream by Morganna's Alchemy revitalizes and moisturizes the skin.

24K Glow Super Cream by Morganna’s Alchemy revitalizes and moisturizes the skin.

24K Glow Super Cream uses natural, effective ingredients that are gentle to the skin. It addresses acne, dark spots, and wrinkles.

24K Glow Super Cream combines two non-irritating skincare superstars: Bakuchiol and Astaxanthin. Together, they match retinol benefits and offer collagen AND elastin support.  24K Glow Super Cream has skin nourishing, hydrating, collagen-promoting yet gentle ingredients.

But every ingredient claims it is wonderful. What’s the proof?

Clinical Research

The skincare showdown: Bakuchiol vs Retinol

Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is a plant-based phenol that decreases wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Studies show that gentle, natural bakuchiol holds its’ own against Retinol.

“Our study demonstrates that bakuchiol is comparable with retinol in its ability to improve photoaging and is better tolerated than retinol.” [1]

One randomized, double-blind, 12-week clinical study with 44 volunteers compared retinol and bakuchiol. There was no statistical difference between how each decreased wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. But the retinol users reported facial skin scaling and stinging. [2]

A second study confirmed the Retinol-like functionality of bakuchiol. It also documented the stimulation of collagen within the skin. Bakuchiol was used twice a day for 12 weeks. The result was a significant improvement in wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, and firmness without the retinol associated side effects. [3]

Bakuchiol inhibits melanin production on age spots and acne scars better than arbutin [4]. Bakuchiol also helps with acne.[5]

What makes Bakuchiol even better?
Pairing it with Astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is an exceptional anti-oxidant.

Many topicals use a chemically synthesized Astaxanthin. But 24K Glow Super Cream uses natural Astaxanthin.  Natural Astaxanthin is derived from Haematococcus Pluvalis Extract, a freshwater species of algae. [6]

Anti-oxidants are important because oxidative stress causes dermal damage resulting in skin aging.

Natural aging and photoaging (UV light) produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS ages skin by causing an inflammatory response. [7] This degrades skin collagen and elastin.

Astaxanthin is especially effective at preventing ROS formations in the skin. [8]

Astaxanthin protects skin from the free radical damage that accelerates skin aging. It counteracts UV damage and improves elasticity via improved skin function. It promotes collagen production. [9]

Astaxanthin suppresses hyperpigmentation and photoaging. It also reduces wrinkle formation in several clinical studies [10].

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant, more potent and stable than Vitamins C or E.

Morganna’s Alchemy 24K Glow Super Cream also contains a host of natural but highly effective ingredients to counteract skin aging and support skin hydration. Let’s take a closer look at the other ingredients in this formulation:

the Supporting Ingredients

Olives are a natural Squalane source

Olives are a natural Squalane source

Squalane

Squalane comes from olives oil, rice, or sugar cane.

Rich in fatty acids, it contains all the restorative goodness of olive oil without the greasiness. Squalane mimics the skin’s natural sebum and makes the skin barrier smooth and soft.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is from palm kernel or coconut oil. It is a mix of fatty acids attached to glycerin. It is a natural skin replenishing emollient that creates a barrier on the skin’s surface to reduce moisture loss. [11]

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is a non-synthesized form of Hyaluronic Acid. It is a humectant that offers stronger moisture retention properties than regular HA. It is found naturally and ample supply in young skin, but depletes with age.

Sodium Hyaluronate has a lower molecular size than to other Hyaluronic Acids. This is good because it can absorb deeper into the skin and bring other actives along with it.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a natural vegetable-derived, non-toxic humectant that helps the skin to retain moisture. Glycerin fills in gaps in dryer skin which makes skin look better and keeps the outer layer of the skin intact.

Tocopherol

Tocopherol is a natural Vitamin E is from plant seeds. It is a skin-softening antioxidant that makes damaged skin (scars, sun-damaged) pliable.  Once the skin is pliable, other treating ingredients can work their magic.

Hydrolyzed Collagen

Collagen is the scaffolding of skin. We lose it as we age. Less collagen means more sagging. Hydrolyzed Collagen is broken down into smaller pieces to penetrate the skin.

Hydrolyzed Royal Jelly Protein

Royal Jelly is the gelatinous substance bees make to feed the queen bee. Royal Jelly is an anti-inflammatory anti-oxidant filled with skin-friendly nutrients. It smooths fine lines and wrinkles and enables skin repair. [12]  Royal Jelly can promote collagen production. [13]

Hydrolyzed Elastin

Elastin gives skin its’ youthful bounce. It works with collagen to support and firm the skin.

My Experience

24K Glow Super Cream is a sleek, sealed product with an enclosed pump top dispenser.

The cream itself is an apricot shade, but it doesn’t impart any actual tint to the skin. It is a creamy gel consistency.

The texture is not at all gritty like some Retinol prescription gels. It absorbs and spreads easily without tugging the skin. It dries down within a minute. I give an extra minute before sunscreen application but it is not tacky or gummy.

A light gel-like cream with a non-tacky finish

A light gel-like cream with a non-tacky finish

There is a pleasant almost sweet spicy scent that dissipates on the dry down.

The skin has a bit of a glow afterward but not greasy looking. My skin feels smooth and appears hydrated with or without additional moisturizer application.

24K Glow is a creamy gel consistency

24K Glow is a creamy gel consistency

RESULTS

I have used it twice a day for 11 days. And so far no dreadful skin peeling days that I can’t wear makeup on my skin. No days that my skin is so raw that my sunscreen stings. No skipping a topical treatment day because my skin is just too red and irritated. It is early but my skin looks more even and refined.

Notably, unlike by day ten of Retinol use, my skin is hydrated and smooth.

The Experiment

Structurally, bakuchiol is nothing like retinol. But…I still wondered if an excessive application would irritate my skin like retinol can. So I deliberately over-did it a few nights in a row to see what would happen.

I zealously applied it before bed expecting to wake up with a red face. Unlike Retinol, I did not wake up red and irritated, and my skin was not tight or itchy feeling. It looked smooth and hydrated, even without applying moisturizer. When I applied 24k Glow in the morning, it did not sting and my skin was not tight.

Contains Liposomal Astaxanthin

Contains Liposomal Astaxanthin

what We Love

Unlike Retinol, 24K Glow can be used on areas too sensitive for retinol. I can use it around my mouth, on the under-eye area, and on crow’s feet.

And while Retinol shouldn’t be worn during the day, this bakuchiol-based product is safe to use both day and night.

Studies show bakuchiol results are seen in 12 weeks. So far, so good!

Anti-Aging DevicesAn Update On Our NEWA Experience

October 4, 2020 · 2 Comments

We recently interviewed EndyMed, the makers of NEWA. NEWA is an at-home RF device designed to reduce facial sagging. The 3DEEP radiofrequency energy that powers the NEWA is the same medical technology used by clinics and dermatologists. And the Style Chicks are testing NEWA out. Here are our first impressions of NEWA.

NEWA tightens skin and produces collagen

Does Using NEWA Hurt?

No. NEWA is not painful: it doesn’t zap, sting or burn.

There is a mild warmth, like getting an ultrasound. We use it on the higher power setting, 2, but there is a lower power setting if needed. Even around the orbital bone, there is no discomfort.

Set the device to power level two for use, but reduce it to level one if you experience any discomfort

USING THE NEWA ACTIVATOR GEL

The NEWA device comes with a tube of activator gel.

There is a conduction gel. It is important to use enough gel to be able to smoothly glide the treatment head in circles on the skin without tugging the skin. The amount shown in the instructional video looks like a bit much, but about what I found I needed.

I am doing all the possible treatment areas, so I use more gel than someone treating one area. The gel is reapplied to the treatment head before each section session. At this rate, the gel tube in the kit will last about a month.

Replacement tubes of activator gel tubes are available from NEWA and other beauty vendors like Sephora and Neiman Marcus.

Close up of the NEWA treatment head. Cover all of the metal with gel

The Experience

Doing all the treatment areas takes me about half an hour to 40 minutes. It is four minutes per treatment area.

I have slight redness after a treatment, but it is completely gone in about 15 minutes. There is no skin irritation. I can apply my makeup or serums immediately after.

I can see a lift immediately after use, especially on the brow bone area after a forehead treatment. And around my mouth.

I find it is worthwhile to take a few minutes to do NEWA as a spot treatment immediately before makeup. It lifts the area and gives my eyes an alert, perky look and it smooths the lines from my nose to mouth.

Stay tuned for updates and a full report after our initial treatment is completed. Next up, we review the research to understand why NEWA works.

Stay Tuned For Updates on Our Results

The Style Chicks are currently using NEWA to treat:

  • Orbital area
  • Upper cheeks
  • Jawline, turkey waddle, and upper throat
  • Lower cheek area and sagging around the mouth
  • Forehead

For the first month, we do 4-5 treatments per week in each area. We found the tips that EndyMed offered in our interview to be very helpful.
