Dynamic Duos in Skincare

September 5, 2022 ·

Many common skincare ingredients, when paired with specific actives, can achieve spectacular results.  These dynamic duos kick common skincare woes to the curb. Their pairing creates an improved mechanism that is more than the sum of its’ parts.  This article explores two of our favorite ingredient pairings: Konjac Acid with Hyaluronic Acid and Ferulic with Vitamins C and E.

Skincare Dynamic Duos

Many ingredients have excellent synergy. This article focuses on Konjac Acid with Hyaluronic Acid and Ferulic combined with Vitamins C and E.

We love these pairings because they increase the overall efficacy without any added dryness or skin irritation.

Konjac Acid comes from this Konjac Root

Konjac Acid comes from this Konjac Root

Konjac Acid + Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid helps actives penetrate the skin.
MSM, Vitamin C, retinol, peptides, B3, and Sea Buckthorn Oil all benefit from Hyaluronic Acid use. These ingredients do their best work within the deeper skin layers.

But the Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac Acid combination do something special.

Both Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac have high hygroscopic properties to pull moisture into the skin.

Used Alone

Konjac Acid

Konjac Acid contains glucomannan.

Glucomannan is similar to the kind of hyaluronic acid seen in young skin.

Glucomannan penetrates the upper layer of the epidermis and hydrates the surface and make it look younger.

Konjac root also contains a slew of skin-friendly vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, plus lipids and fatty acids. It smooths fine wrinkles and promotes collagen and elastin production.

Konjac contains copper, a skincare superstar that builds collagen and elastin. Elastin is crucial because it reduces sagging and wrinkles and gives skin a springy and healthy look. Copper is rare and pricey skincare, which makes Konjac Acid a skincare treasure. Copper also plays well with other actives. [1]

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the skin, but it depletes as we age. It keeps in moisture to provide cushioning in joints and the skin. It can plump a wrinkle, for example, to appear less severe.

Hyaluronic Acid “pulls” moisture from the air into the skin.

It also pulls active ingredients deeper into skin.

The deeper active ingredients can work, the better the overall result.

Paired Together

The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus the glucomannan in konjac maximize their combined water absorption capacity.

But the really special thing is this: Once they absorb into the skin, they link.  They attract water and swell the skin.

I mean, really, really swell with water. All they can get. So much water.

The result? It gives the skin a nice plump look while simultaneously treating.

Ferulic, C, and E:  The 3 Amigos

Ferulic, C, and E are all anti-aging antioxidants.

Vitamin C needs no introduction within skincare, nor does Vitamin E. You probably use them daily. But this combination can up your game:

Used Alone

Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid comes from plant cell walls.

Ferulic acid is an antioxidant. It excels at protecting against aging caused by free radicals and environmental stress factors.

Vitamin C is a skincare staple. Make it better with Ferulic Acid

Vitamin C is a skincare staple. Make it even better with Ferulic Acid!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C comes in many variants. One is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP).

SAP is a stable precursor of Vitamin C. It ensures a constant delivery of vitamin C into the skin. [2] In layperson terms, it won’t turn brown or go bad. SAP has a strong antimicrobial effect.

SAP is a water-soluble C particularly effective in acne treatment and prevention.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a protective antioxidant that lessens discoloration.

E makes damaged skin pliable again so that other active ingredients can absorb. Once Vitamin E enables actives to once again penetrate formerly damaged skin, these actives can get to work.

Meanwhile, E reduces wrinkles and fine line formation.

Paired Together

Outstanding individually, but together they are special. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology:

“Ferulic acid alone (and vitamins C and E) provide partial protection but vitamins C, E and ferulic acid [altogether] provide virtually complete protection.” [2]

Ferulic acid makes Vitamin C more stable. This pairing keeps your products fresh and effective longer.

Summary of The Dynamic Duos of Skincare Superhero Ingredients

Konjac Acid and Hyaluronic Acid hold moisture very well and make skin look and act younger. Thanks to Konjac’s Glucomannan, skin looks and behaves younger as it seems to have youthful HA again.

Since they both draw ingredients in, they pair well with a third ingredient active. The deeper ingredients like retinol, Vitamin C or MSM can get into the skin, the better results you will see, especially on scars, texture, and photodamage.

Ferulic Acid, C and E don’t just repair old damage. Together, they protect the skin. Ferulic makes C more stable to keep your C formulations fresh and effective.

Ingredient Overview: Mango for Skincare

May 19, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Mango and Mango Seed Butter is an ingredient that contains natural skin-enhancing nutrients, including copper for collagen and elastin production. Read about this skincare beauty superhero and find some of our favorite products that contain skin-loving Mango Seed Butter

Mango

Mango for Skincare

Mangifera Indica is Mango. Mango Seed Butter provides a long-lasting emollient. Rich in fatty acids, it is perfect to keep skin hydrated and dewy overnight.

Copper

Mango is high in copper. Copper builds Collagen, Elastin and increases Hyaluronic Acid production within the skin. While we focus a great deal on copper, elastin is what gives skin its’ youthful bounce.

Copper is rare within skincare products because copper extraction is costly. Copper is found in boutique brands such as Osmotics. Mango extract and Mango Seed Butter provide the benefits of copper at a generally more accessible price point.

Copper peptides promote collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production within the skin. All three are vital for skin firmness, but all three of these components decrease with age. Few skin products build Elastin like copper. Elastin is a necessary part of younger, resilient skin with less sagging. Elastin gives skin its’ youthful springy and bouncy quality.

Copper peptides also remove damaged collagen. [1]

For best results, Copper should be paired with supporting ingredients. These include Peptides, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and retinoids. [2]

Vitamin-Rich

Mango Seed Butter also contains Vitamins C, A, E, K, and B6. These refine the skin and fade discoloration, while protecting against environmental stressors.

  • Vitamin C to reduce fine lines, quell acne, and reverse photodamage
  • Vitamin A to refine the skin texture
  • Vitamin E to soften the skin
  • Vitamin K to reduce redness
  • Vitamin B6 to strength the skin

Omega Fatty Acids

Mango is rich in oleic acid, better known as Omega-9 acid. It provides long-lasting moisture.

We’ve featured several Mango and Mango Seed Butter beauty and skincare products. Here are some of our favorites:

The Science of Skincare: Rosehip Seed Oil

May 12, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Rosehip Seed Oil is an ingredient we may take for granted, but rosehip oil gets things done. Organic rosehip oil is a beauty superhero. We’ve recently featured it in shampoos, skin, and body treatments. Let’s examine the research on this beauty powerhouse. Plus, see some of our favorite products that use Rosehip Seed Oil.

What is Rosehip Seed Oil?

Rosehip Seed Oil is also known as Rosa Canina Seed Oil.  It comes from the fruit and seeds of the rosa canina rose bush. The fruit and seeds are packed with nutrients.

Rosehip Seed Oil is both a treating and a hydrating ingredient. It offers the benefits of Vitamin C and Retinol serums (Vitamin A). It refines texture and lightens dark spots but without the skin irritation associated with the aforementioned actives.

When unrefined, Rosehip Oil retains more of the benefits. It also carries a heavy scent. Refined Rosehip oil has far less scent but fewer benefits. Cold-pressed Rosehip oil retains maximum benefits.

Rosehip Research RoundUp: What Rosehip Oil Does

Rich in nutrients and vitamins, Rosehip Seed Oil addresses multiple skin concerns at once.

Wild Rosehip Oil is high in Vitamins A, C, and E. They provide nutrients, fade acne scars and promote cell turnover.

Reduce Wrinkles, Keep Skin Hydrated

Rose Hip oil retains moisture in the skin cells. Vitamins E and C work synergistically to keep skin hydrated during rejuvenation. This hydration reduces wrinkles and improves skin elasticity. [1]

Skin That Glows, Dry Skin Relief

Rosehip oil has omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 makes skin glow, as well as soothe and moisturize eczema or dry skin. [2] It is also useful to soothe the skin from any irritation. I find it works well on acne scars and rougher skin areas.

Cold Pressed Rosehip Oil retains linoleic acid. Linoleic acid (Vitamin F) is an omega-6 fatty acid with skin barrier-strengthening, healing, hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties.  It is the predominant fat in skin cells. This forms a lipid barrier that holds moisture in skin cells, which keeps skin at optimal hydration levels.

Collagen Enhancing

Rosehip oil is collagen enhancing and preserving. It contains Vitamins A and C for collagen production.

Rosehip has one hundred times more C than an orange. Studies show topical Vitamin C application creates meaningful anti-aging change within Rosehips contain vitamin C60 days. Improvements were seen in all ages groups and were notable for improvement to the thickness of the epidermis and dermis. [3] Rosehip oil delivers potent Vitamin C without the irritation found in many topical Cs.

Rosehip oil also inhibits MMP-1, an enzyme that breaks down collagen within the body. [4]

Antioxidant

Rosehip Oil contains powerful antioxidants to remove toxins and improve skin texture. Visible results can be seen especially quickly on sun-damaged skin.

Redness, Rosacea & Skin Tone

Rosehip oil has retinoic acid. This clears red marks, uneven skin tone and even helps rosacea.

Hair & Scalp Health

Healthy scalps grow healthy hair, Rosehip oil balances oil production for clearer scalp skin. Vitamin E keeps brittle hair hydrated. Rosehip oil combined with a carrier oil makes for a wonderful scalp massage.
