DESIGN: The first thing you’ll notice about the iron, apart from its’ pretty appearance, is that it rests differently than a normal curling or straightening wand, with the plates aligning at an angle so that they slide together instead of clamping down on the hair.

FOUR TEMPERATURE SETTINGS
There are four different temperature settings. The recommended temperatures for each hair type are:

  • 140°C (284 F) for damaged or thin hair
  • 180°C (356F) for naturally curly hair;
  • 200°C (392) for thick hair;
  • 220°C (428) for super thick hair.

HOW TO USE

For curls, place the curved plate facing outwards and roll the iron down and out through the hair. For straightening and styling fringe or short pieces, roll out using the flat side of the iron facing away from you.

The convex or curved plate creates a curl, the flat plate straightens. Position the flat plate facing outward away from you for hair straightening, and position the curved side outward away from you for curling. To curl, rotate the iron by slowly turning your wrist while running the iron through your hair.

To straighten, select small sections and move the iron quickly through the hair. If you cannot get your hair taut, pull the section over the top of your head to the other side for gentle tension.

MY EXPERIENCE: HOW TO USE THE AleoBeauty Twist Straightening Iron

Here is the sequence I used to style my hair:

      1. Blow dry clean, conditioned hair until 80% dry.
      2. Plug in and press the button for 3 seconds to turn on the device.
      3. TEMPERATURE SETTING: Incrementally press the temperature button to set the temperature. Choose the temperature best suited to your hair type.
      4. The temperature light will start to flicker and the device heats up quickly to the set temperature. After the light stops flickering, it is time to start styling!
      5. Select straight or curly style by placing the corresponding plate outward, away from you.
      6. Starting in the back of your head, select a small section of hair and hold it up and out to place it into the device.
      7. Hold the iron base in your dominant hand. Use fingers from your non-dominant hand to press together the device ends using the cool-touch finger rests.
      8. Turn your dominate hand 90 degrees outward, going away from your head.
      9. Slowly slide the hair straightener as you rotate away down the length of the hair.

      11. Repeat on the next section
      12. Loosen the curls as needed by finger tousling, do not brush.
      13. Add any oil or styling finishing product desired.

      TIP: Remember to move the iron through the hair quickly, don’t stay in one spot too long to avoid damaging hair

      TIPS FOR BEST USE

      If you have difficulty replicating salon styling results at home with your own heat styling tools, try these suggestions to optimize results with the AleoBeauty Twist:

      • Start in the back with long vertical sections, twisting your wrist slowly as you go down the hair length, but not twisting so tightly as to kink hair into a full ringlet style twist
      • On shorter top layers, guide iron up and out
      • Alternate the curl direction to keep them separate and distinct and full and so they don’t collapse into each other
      • To preserve length, roll the iron down while curling
      • For fringe pieces, roll out using the straightening side of the iron facing outward away from you
      • Keep the iron vertical for a more open curl
      • Roll out shorter pieces to blend into the hair

      Angle the flat side outward to straighten hair with or without a flip up or under at the ends

      RESULTS

      The curls are soft, undone curls, not “ringlets” or Veronica Lake structure style. Natural and pretty. I like how the technique of drawing the device down while curling preserves the length of hair with styling. The swivel cord does make it much easier to style the back of the hair.

      CONCLUSION

      With an easy to use control panel, four temperature settings and quick, easy styling options make the AleoBeauty Twist Straightening Iron ideal for fast curls or sleek styles at home or while traveling. I really like the soft curls that look pretty and add fullness without looking overly “done”. It does take some practice to make the best use of the dual straight/curl function of this device, but it styles hair very quickly.

Kentucky Derby Day Mint Julep Recipe in Kamojo Moscow Mules

Here at Style Chicks, we are always game for an excuse like a good old-fashioned Kentucky Derby party to get dressed up and have a Mint Julep just in time to kick off our summer. For a twist on the traditional silver julep cups, the Moscow Mule adds a warm look to the overall decor, has a handle that makes one’s drink easier to manage, and keeps your drink ice cold and the ice intact longer. Shaved and soft ice can melt quickly, making a copper Moscow Mule an ideal choice for serving this drink on a warm day. So for this Kentucky Derby Mint Julep recipe, we are using our Kamojo Copper Moscow Mules. They not only look good but actually enhance the taste of the drink.

So on to the Mint Julep recipe itself. This recipe can be done two ways, the prepared in advance simple syrup way, or the last minute (and less sweet) muddled just before serving way.

Mint simple syrup is, well, simple to make but must be done in advance.

Mint Julep Recipe

For each Julep you’ll need:

  • 1 oz mint simple syrup
  • 2 cups crushed, shaved or soft ice
  • Bourbon Whiskey
  • Sprigs of fresh mint for garnish and syrup prep

This drink is quite simple, but the prep begins the night before or earlier in the making of the simple syrup. If you don’t have time to make a simple syrup, use our alternate muddled version below. Either way, your first step is to separate out any bruised or less attractive mint from your garnish quality mint. If preparing a simple syrup, dice the non-garnish quality mint pieces for inclusion. If you are muddling, simply tear the leaves into smaller muddle-friendly pieces.

MAKE MINT SIMPLE SYRUP

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Sprigs of fresh mint

DIRECTIONS

  • Make a simple syrup by boiling the sugar and water together for five minutes.
  • Dice several sprigs of fresh peppermint leaves and add to the boiling mix
  • Cool and place in a covered container and refrigerate overnight.
  • Pour mix through a strainer to remove the peppermint leaves.
  • Pour into a sealed container until use

QUICK LAST MINUTE SUBSTITUTION FOR MINT SIMPLE SYRUP: Alternatively, for a less sweet or last-minute variant to simple syrup, substitute a muddled fresh mint, a teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of bourbon at the bottom of the Moscow Mule. The honey adds a smooth sweetness, alter measurements to taste. I like to muddle before any other prep is done to allow the mint to impart maximum flavor to the bourbon and honey, but extra mint can always be added in the middle of the ice if you are short on time.

MINT JULEP ASSEMBLY 

Make one julep at a time and serve immediately.

  1. Muddle a few mint leaves into the bottom of a Moscow Mule (optional but tasty)
  2. Fill the mule with ice
  3. Add simple syrup
  4. Add two ounces of bourbon
  5. Add a splash of flat or sparkling water, more water if a “lighter” or less sweet drink is preferred
  6. Garnish with peppermint sprigs
  7. Add an optional garnish of blackberries
  8. Insert a Kamojo Copper Straw and serve!

Once the bottle is filled and ready, remove the water tank compartment from the side of the flat iron. Underneath you will see a spot to uncap and fill with the Argan Oil and water mix in your bottle. Replace the cap and fit the water tank back onto the styling tool.

The ceramic plates function both traditionally and to diffuse a steam mist to style and condition your hair. There is just enough steam to enable styling and Argan penetration. Hair will not become excessively damp, but it is enough to style and not rob your hair of its’ own natural moisture during the heat style process and to keep hair from burning even at higher heats.

TIP: While these are anti-clogging steam plates, ONLY use the amount of oil instructed, this is not a case where “more is more”. The best results are with this exact ratio or just using water for the styling power of steam.

AS A CURLER

The unique swivel body and base along with its’ shape make it very easy to use this as a curler. A bit of practice with the included clips make for some great waves ranging from bombshell to beach waves to vintage 20’s wave set styles.

CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN

The shape of the Merakii Steam Curling Straightener is easy to hold in my hand. Made with a long cord with a swivel base, it is easy to use this on even very long hair. The handle remains cool to the touch.

The parts are well constructed and the 10ml chamber tank is sturdy. It holds 1/3 of an ounce. All knobs, buttons, and switches are in working order. There is an easy to read digital display. I am especially impressed with the durability and size of the ceramic plates.

RESULTS

The steam adds a nice styling component, it does not unduly wet the hair down, just enough to style. The infusion of Argan Oil is just the right amount to not get too sticky while creating optimal shine and softness. I love that with this steam and Argan Oil combination, I can style my hair without chemicals AND that it has the benefit of a leave-in conditioning treatment without the stiffness or dullness of most leave-in conditioner.

It is high in unsaturated fats and Vitamin K, which can help reduce the appearance of dark circles and discoloration. Vitamin E and A moisturizes and nourishes dry and mature skin and improve skin elasticity.

JOJOBA OIL
Jojoba is very similar to parts of our skin in chemical structure. A soothing carrier oil that nourishes skin, softens scars and makes them more pliable, and helps skin retain existing moisture as well as preserving skin elasticity. It does not cause acne or clog pores even though it works very similar to sebum keeps skin soft. Made of 98% monounsaturated fats so it can penetrate deeply, Jojoba absorbs well and does some of its’ best work when paired with other active ingredients.

SQUALENE
Squalene an emollient and anti-oxidant that is a lipid-based moisturizer. It is seen in many high-end brands (read: pricey) skin products, especially those targeted for use around the eyes and lip area. This is with good reason, as Squalene is highly effective in treating fine expression lines around the lips and eyes like crow’s feet.

It is a natural part of sebum, which, like Jojoba, is a building block of your skin looking young and well moisturized. We tend to think of sebum as a bad thing, but that is only when it is trapped in pores or under dead, dry skin cells, where it can become a component of acne. Squalene is actually especially good for acne prone and oily skin.

Effective ingredients that are gentle enough for twice a day use on face, eye area, throat, and decolletage.

MY EXPERIENCE: PUTTING BE AN OSTRICH AQUA BOMB Moisturizing Anti-Aging Cream TO THE TEST

INITIAL IMPRESSION:  Dries down quickly, leaves skin feeling soft, not greasy. Fine lines and not so fine lines (read eleven lines and smile lines) look softer and more supple after application. Skin looks healthy.

There is no detectable scent, which I prefer, especially around my eyes.

APPLICATION
It does not pill over serums or under sunscreen. It dries down well so it’s suitable for use under makeup. My undereye concealer goes on smoother with this cream as a base than many primers intended for the purpose of being used as a base.

Surface dry and flaky skin tends to slough off during application, I particularly like using this after exfoliating.

Creamy and silky without being oily or greasy

MY RESULTS WITH REGULAR USE
We tested the cream for several weeks to see long-term benefits. This includes how the skin looks after regular use when I have no product or makeup on my freshly washed face before any cream is applied.

Fine lines do look softer and less deep. My face is less dry, more supple, and there are far less redness and irritation from my topical treatments. A few acne scar marks look softer. There are no dry, flaky patches. My skin has a subtle glow.

Using the Be An Ostrich Aqua Bomb Moisturizer Anti-Aging Cream on acne keeps skin free from flakes that may inhibit the absorption of topical acne treatments. It is also easier to conceal a blemish when it is less flaky, red and irritated.

Maybe there’s an optical deflector property of the dewy moist look of the skin or the smoothing of the fine lines, but my dark circles seem not as dark as usual since using this cream. There is actual basis for this: Apricot Oil contains Vitamin K, known to reduce the appearance of dark circles.

But sometimes it is hard to see the exact differences in your skin. Our tester had computerized skin analysis done to see exactly (and scientifically) just how and where Be An Ostrich Aqua Bomb Moisturizer Anti-Aging Cream made a difference on her skin. The most impressive results were on forehead fine lines:

Prior to using Be An Ostrich Aqua Bomb Moisturizer Anti-Aging Cream, she had a decent amount of expression lines. The lighter green are fine lines, the dark green are “just about to turn into wrinkles” lines.
