Why curly hair Needs Moisture

Curly hair requires extra moisture

Curly hair is naturally drier. It has a wider diameter which leads to more surface moisture loss. Our natural scalp oils have difficulty making their way down the spiral shape of a curl.

The shape of a curl also makes it extra brittle.

When curly hair is colored or styled straight with hot tools, it can easily damage already dry hair.

Many shampoos and even conditioners contain ingredients that dry out and damage curly hair. These include parabens, sulphates, silicones, and alcohols.

If you have curly hair, it is a great time to transition away from drying shampoos and conditioners in order to achieve lush, healthy, soft, and shiny curls.

A great haircare set for curly hair is Maximilian Passion Fruit Black Seed Oil Curly Hair Shampoo and Conditioner Set.

What Makes Maximilian Special

Maximilian ingredients are considered safe for curly hair

Both the shampoo and conditioner use natural, safe, curly friendly ingredients to infuse and lock in moisture.

Also important is what these products do NOT contain:

  • No Sulfate, Parabens, PEG, coloring, or gluten
  • No Silicone
  • No animal testing, cruelty-free

While these features are vital for curly hair, they are also beneficial to any texture hair that is dry, colored or damaged. Sulfates can be drying to even oily hair types. But this set uses three gentle cleansers considered safe for curly hair.

This volumizing formula makes hair healthier, it smooths the hair while imparting softness and shine. The ingredients work together to add moisture and then lock in that moisture.

Let’s take a closer look at these outstandingly curl-friendly ingredients.

Passion Fruit Extract

Passion fruit Extract contains hair restoring nutrients

Passion fruit Extract contains hair restoring nutrients

Passion fruit seed oil, also known as Maracuja Oil, is a Brazilian beauty mainstay. It improves how the hair looks and feels. It also benefits the health of the scalp. Healthy scalps are vital to growing healthy hair.

Passion fruit extract contains 72% linoleic acid, one of the richest sources of this hair-friendly essential acid. [1]  This gives hair a glossy, healthy shine.

It is rich in vitamin A, potassium, antioxidants, and minerals that benefit both hair and scalp. Vitamin C, riboflavin, carotene improves moisture retention. These antioxidants counteract the oxidative stress signs of hair aging [2]

Vitamin E improves dry hair and a dry scalp. It infuses moisture and retains it. This helps alleviate dandruff and restore dry, damaged hair.  Vitamins B6 and B2 aid scalp circulation. This benefits follicles and helps build stronger hair. Passion fruit extract also has anti-inflammatory benefits.

The vitamins in Passion fruit extract are amazing at locking in moisture without leaving the hair greasy or limp.

Sweet Almond Oil restores brittle hair

Sweet Almond Oil restores brittle hair

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet Almond Oil is hair reparative and softening.  Sweet Almond Oil is excellent for brittle hair, damaged hair, dry and over-processed hair.

Sweet almond oil contains proteins and vitamins A, B, D, and E, Omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, and magnesium. Amino acids and proteins strengthen the hair strand and smooth the appearance of the hair cuticle.  It nourishes and strengthens damaged hair, making it silky and shiny again. It also reduces hair loss and makes hair more elastic.

Sweet Almond Oil protects delicate hair strands and combats brittleness. Brittleness results in breakage and is a huge barrier to meaningful hair growth.

Almond Oil is also a carrier oil, meaning it helps other oils and ingredients penetrate and absorb.

Sweet Almond Oil also gives hair a natural sheen.

Black Seed Oil

Black Seed Oil comes from the seeds of the flower Nigella sativa

Black Seed Oil comes from the seeds of the flower Nigella sativa

Black Seed Oil is also known as Cumin Seed Oil. It comes from the seeds of the Nigella sativa, commonly called virgin in the green flower.

Rich in fatty amino acids, Black Seed Oil is moisturizing to both the hair and the scalp.

For scalp care, Black Seed Oil contains Thymoquinone. This is an excellent antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. It hydrates the scalp to keep it in optimal condition for growing healthy hair.  It combats scalp conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis, and other skin conditions  [3]

Black Seed Oil is called a hair growth remedy.  Studies of Telogen effluvium hair loss show topical Black Seed Oil reduces temporary hair loss. [4]

Black Cumin Oil works well with other ingredients to provide therapeutic effects.

Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

Panthenol is a humectant, emollient, and moisturizer. Panthenol is the alcohol analog of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and is a provitamin of B5. It has ultra-hydrating properties. But unlike oils, it won’t make hair oily or greasy.

Panthenol penetrates the hair shaft and locks in moisture. It also retains moisture along the hair surface which reflects light for a shiny appearance. It also makes hair look and feels soft and pliable without oils or waxes. The sealed-in moisture plumps the hair shaft which gives the hair a more voluminous appearance.  It makes hair look healthier by boosting shine and plumping the hair shaft. More volume gives even damaged or thinning hair a healthier appearance. [5]

It is excellent for brittle hair and curly hair. It washes clean from the hair without residue. For very porous hair, it can behave like a protein.

Panthenol also moisturizes the skin on the scalp and is believed to promote cell regeneration.

There is a soothing, gentle latter. It rinses clean but the hair doesn’t feel stripped. The directions say to rinse with cool water.

Impressively moisturizing on my curly, coarse, damaged hair. It leaves my hair so soft and shiny!

The Conditioner

The texture is creamy and lightweight. It is not waxy or sticky.

I used about two-three tablespoons on my waist-length hair. It is an excellent texture for the curly girl method “squish and cond-ish”. My hair just drank it in.

Even while I was rinsing the conditioner from my hair, it felt so much stronger.

Hair: Curlfriends Tame Smoothing Serum

August 15, 2016 · Leave a Comment

Curlfriends Tame Smoothing Serum

Curlfriends Tame Smoothing Serum

Back in the 1990s, it was easy to get defined curls. But it took a LOT of product.

These days my hair has mellowed from the corkscrew curls of my youth to a loose curl with some waves. So it takes some products to restore my hair to its previous bouncy, tight curls. My hair has also changed consistency as well. It used to be as silky as could be, but now it needs a little smoothing.

I had previously tried the Curlfriends line, and was quite impressed, but I hadn’t tried Curlfriends Tame Smoothing Serum until now.

I first tested the serum on a day that it was boiling and humid, and as the day progressed, there were torrential downpours. I had set my hair in curlers just to try to tame them a bit, but my hair started to get frizzy as soon as I took out the last roller. I applied the serum and was pleasantly surprised to see that my hair not only smoothed down but was incredibly shiny and bouncy. It stayed that way all through the downpours that afternoon, all without hairspray.

A tip on how to use it: you don’t need much of the serum. My hair is nearly waist length, and I used less than a dime-sized amount. Run the serum between your hands to warm it slightly, and then slowly start picking your curls up from the ends and working your way up. I used the remainder to smooth off the crown and add some shiny volume. Going slowly is the key: if you go too fast, you will just end up tugging at your curls and end up with needless frizz.

I’m a big fan of the ingredients in this serum as well: Wheat Protein and Aloe Vera to add volume and plump the shaft of your hair, and Rosemary, which has some backing for its ability to fight hair loss. I’m also a fan of what it doesn’t have – no alcohol to dry out your hair!

I love the smell – somewhere between a light bubble gum and candy flavor, but not adolescent scented. It’s just a nice, fun scent that fades in about an hour. I am typically pretty hard lined about hair products being scent-free, but I really like the scent of this product.

Find it at Amazon.

I received this product in exchange for testing and review purposes. If you have any questions about my experience with it, leave it in the comments section below, and I’ll do my best to answer it!
