While we love the idea of a natural lipstick, in our experience, the options from other brands are generally more like a tinted or sheer balm in chapstick style tube form. These have their place in a casual, barely-there hint of color looks. But they lack the grown-up sophistication of a precise application lipstick formulation.   • Castor Seed Oil is a humectant that reduces inflammation, heals scars and hydrates.
  • Sunflower Seed Oil is hydrating, nourishing and an excellent supporting base. It retains moisture in the skin and is rich in Vitamin E. [1]
  • Abyssinian Seed Oil is lightweight and absorbs easily. It contains linoleic acid, which is the predominant fat in skin cells. It forms the lipid barrier that holds moisture in skin cells, which keeps skin hydrated.
  • Candelilla Wax is a vegan substitute for beeswax with similar properties. It works well with other waxes for improved product consistency and to raise melting points without chemicals.

WHAT IT IS

The Illuminate Pretty in Pink Brush set is a set of four hand-crafted, vegan brushes.

The Details

The Pretty in Pink Brushes have long tapered handles. They have a nice grip and weight that makes them easy to keep a steady hand while using them.

The brush set includes:

  • Fan (for highlighting + strobing). The fan is seen at the bottom of the picture below. Perfect for top of the cheek highlight or collarbone highlight.
  • Tapered Kabuki (for buffing + contouring liquid or cream). The tapered Kabuki (top right) holds creamy liquid foundations well. Also very useful as a buffer to blend contour products. It is firmer and denser than the pointed powder.
  • Pointed Powder (for setting + diffusing) The pointed is also top right, facing right. Just light enough for a final dusting and blending. It is fluffier and lighter than the Kabuki with more give.
  • Angled Contouring (a blending brush + for contour) is seen in the middle. More about this one below.

ANGLED BRUSH

I particularly like the angled contouring brush. It is stiff enough with just enough bend to get right into the hollow and define with precision. The bristles are soft and not scratchy. It works with powder or cream blushes and contours and gets the placement right the first time. If you have a hard time getting blush or cheek contour placed just where you want it, the Angled brush gets the job done.

Fan Brush

The fan brush delivers a particularly precise, thin placement of product, just the right delicate touch for shimmery products like metallics or highlighters. Note the wispy bristle ends for a delicate kiss of product.

CONSISTENCY: The oil is semi-thick but easily spreadable.  A very tiny bit of Tamanu Oil goes a long way. I mix a few drops into my moisturizer or apply it directly to acne or a scar.

EFFECT:

I tried Prime Natural Tamanu Oil on an old scar on my leg. I massage a drop into the scar each day for a week. It does look softer and feels more pliable.

This Tamanu Oil spreads easier than other Tamanu oils I have tried. I combine Tamanu Oil with Jojoba Oil or a supporting essential oil such as Lavender Oil for a moisturizing scalp massage.

Another option is to add a dropper full of Tamanu Oil into a creamy hair conditioner. This turns any hair conditioner into a super conditioning hair masque treatment! I find it leaves my hair soft, silky and smooth. My hair feels stronger after Tamanu use.

Organic Tamanu oil has a unique fatty acid profile. It has an unusual fatty acid called calophyllic acid. There are few studies on Calophyllum (calophyllic acid). Various studies verified the wound healing, safety, and antibacterial properties of Calophyllum (3).

This supports the anecdotal reports of the skin improvement seen with the traditional use of Tamanu Oil for at least scars, burns, and stretch marks.

Tamanu Oil is an exciting and promising Oil for a host of topical and medical uses. Tamanu Oil research is still limited. But studies are still in development to further explore potential benefits.
