Senior skincare: Retinol and Vitamin C Results For The Over 65 Crowd

February 12, 2018 · 21 Comments

Age Spots.

Have you ever actually thought about how offensive that phrase is? As if I forget my AARP status, and need to be reminded by hyperpigmentation.

And let’s not even get into the patronizing terms like “laugh lines”. I’m not trying to deny my age, but there is nothing wrong with wanting to look good for your age. That’s why I love Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer for signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation.

There are special considerations when it comes to skincare for mature skin. The younger women here at Style Chicks use Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer as a preventative measure, or to nip a problem in the bud. For me, I’m trying to not only prevent further aging, but to reverse the damage that has been done over time by both intrinsic and extrinsic dermal aging. In other words, we’re not just fighting what time has done to us, we’re fighting what UV exposure, pollution, and a host of other factors have done to our skin over the years.

Let’s consider some of the signs of aging that Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer works for:

Lordsbury Retinol+C Cream Moisturizer: the all-in-one anti-aging weapon

Lordsbury Retinol+C Cream Moisturizer: the all-in-one anti-aging weapon

WRINKLES

Wrinkles occur due to thinning of the skin, loss of facial muscle mass, damage to collagen and the reduction of collagen production after age 30, and dehydration of the outer layer of the skin. While the loss of facial muscle mass is best left to the facial exercises that suddenly seem to be popular (and a good diet), Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer is highly effective for the rest of the causes of wrinkles.

Thinning of skin can be caused by a number of factors and leads to the dreaded “crepey skin” appearance. If the skin is thinner and the skin is dryer on the outer layers, then you have a perfect environment for wrinkles and lines to form. Add to that the intrinsic rapid loss of collagen starting at age 30 and rapidly decreasing in production each year, and wrinkles form.

Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer treats the causes of wrinkles by using a high-grade Retinol to increase cell turnover and increase collagen production. This softens wrinkles and effectively treats fine lines. This increased cell turnover and increased collagen production lead to thicker, smoother skin that acts younger than your true “skin age”. Which means it looks better. Vitamin C protects your “new skin” from pollution, free radicals, and other extrinsic aging factors.

Lordsbury contains pure Retinol, Vitamin C Serum, Hyaluronic and a host of natural moisturizers all in one cream

Lordsbury contains pure Retinol, Vitamin C Serum, Hyaluronic and a host of natural moisturizers all in one cream

Lordsbury’s formula also contains Hyaluronic Acid, which helps with the appearance of crepey skin by boosting moisture content in the outer layers of skin, so skin looks plump and glowy. In addition to everyone’s favorite ingredient Hyaluronic Acid, the moisturizer also contains natural and organic Wildcrafted Green Tea, Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Shea Butter, and Vitamins B5 and E. That is quite the humectant combo to keep your skin in top hydrated form! These ingredients also buffer the Retinol so you won’t experience the usual side effects of Retinol products: redness, flaking, and dry skin.

HYPERPIGMENTATION

Maybe you tanned in your 20s. Maybe you weren’t diligent with sunscreen. Maybe you have dark spots due to acne scars. Or you just have bad genetics. Years of any of these factors can lead to hyperpigmentation. Anytime you pick up a beauty magazine, you read about the latest K-Beauty trend – Glass Skin, Cloudless Skin, etc. What is the goal of any of these trends? To get skin that is free of hyperpigmentation, which is a hallmark of young skin.

Both Retinol and Vitamin C work to decrease hyperpigmentation and improve the clarity of skin. When you start a Retinol program, you might notice a slight darkening and tightening of spots on your face. Don’t give up! That means that the deeper levels of hyperpigmentation are rising to the surface and will soon exfoliate off. In fact, seeing that initial but brief darkening if how I know that any Retinol product is working!

Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer is gentle enough to use around the eyes, so you don’t need a separate eye cream. It is amazing for getting rid of fine lines and smoothing the delicate orbital skin.

Don’t forget about the other “tell-tale” areas of skin that show aging, as well. Use Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer on your throat and décolletage. At a generous 2.8 oz, Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer can treat all these areas gently and effectively.

Lordbury Retinol+C Cream Moisturizer comes in a generous 2.8 ounce size pump bottle, and only one pump is needed for face and throat

Of course, just because we’re old enough to have seen two serial versions of Poldark AND two versions of Dynasty doesn’t mean that we can slack off on the basics: SPF is a daily prerequisite for everyone regardless of age or skincare routine. However, using it on mature skin is especially needed to prevent further extrinsic aging and protect the skin on the whole. SPF is also necessary for anyone on a Retinol program.

Aging isn’t a bad thing. Aging gracefully is a worthy goal. But that doesn’t negate taking care of your skin and looking like the best version of yourself. Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer is a great way to make your mature skin look optimal!

(Editor’s Note: We haven’t seen the reboot of Dynasty. Everyone at Style Chicks does, however, obsess during every episode of Poldark over how perfect Demelza’s and Caroline’s skin is, even without the benefit of Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer. Even Aunt Agatha has fantastic skin considering her age. That pop-culture disclosure isn’t required by the FCC, but we still think you should know.)

Skincare: Instanatural Age Defying Skin Clearing Serum

October 7, 2016 · 1 Comment

In my teenage angst, I thought that at least my acne would clear up before I started to get fine lines on my face. Nope.

The majority of daily skin care products address one problem such as acne, wrinkles, dullness or fine lines. The problem is, if you are like me, all these problems can occur at once: adult acne, dry skin, wrinkles and fine lines all at the same time. How does one go about treating multi-concern skin?

THE PROBLEM: SKIN CARE FOR THE ACNE PRONE ADULT
If you have a tendency towards adult acne *and* you’re forming fine lines and wrinkles, you know the difficulty of skincare multi-tasking. Your acne care makes your skin look dry and old, and your anti-aging skin care can give you breakouts.

Add to the problem that most acne remedies are for teenagers with younger, oily skin. A teen can tolerate covering their chin and forehead with harsh benzoyl peroxides or other pimple creams and be none the worse for wear, but on an adult, these ingredients are too harsh, and they magnify the fine lines on anyone but a teenager.

Meanwhile, your skin requires moisturizing, and a daily program to enhance and repair your skin, as well as ideally, build collagen. These products generally include Vitamin C and Retinol serums as well as moisturizing ingredients.

INGREDIENTS FOR ACNE PRONE OLDER SKIN
Studies indicate that Salicylic Acid best targets the acne of adult skin, it is less harsh and will not make skin look flaky, red or dry, it treats existing breakouts and pre-empts new acne from forming.

A MULTI-TASKING SOLUTION: INSTANATURAL CLEAR SKIN SERUM
Instanaturals gets it that you can have more than one skin care issue occurring at once. Instanaturals Age Defying Skin Clearing Serum is designed for just that: it has enough Salicylic Acid to pre-empt acne breakouts, yet it also contains grown-up skincare ingredients including Vitamin C, Retinol, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin B3.

HOW IT WORKS:
Vitamin C and Retinol works for both anti-aging and pre-empting acne. Both Vitamin C and Retinol lighten discoloration from skin damage and acne scarring. They help build collagen, which makes skin look smoother and clearer, smoothing out fine bumps and pitting left from acne scars. Collagen also keeps skin from wrinkling and smooths fine lines. Vitamin B3 works to reduce scarring and red inflammation at a deeper level of the skin, so scars fade faster. Hyaluronic Acid holds moisture, plumping the skin, so it stays smooth and supple despite acne-sacking ingredients like Salicylic Acid and Tea Tree Oil eliminating acne. This combination of moisturizing yet effective ingredients gives an overall unblemished, clear appearance to the skin, all while building collagen to fight future aging.

APPLICATION:
It is a thin liquid; it is not sticky. I only need about 1/6 of the dropper full for my entire face. It goes on smooth and dries down evenly so that makeup can be applied over it. Unlike some acne treatments, there is no tell-tale chalky residue or scent. The only scent is from the Vitamin C, a citrus scent that dissipates as it dries. It does not sting, and my skin feels smooth. The only advice I would give is I would skip the delicate eye area, as the ingredients for acne are indeed too drying for this skin. It applies quickly.

RESULTS:
I am very glad to find a product that addresses so many of my concerns at once. For areas such as forehead and chin, it is wonderful to be able to simultaneously address aging and acne concerns. The low-dose Salyclic is just enough to keep acne at bay while not overly drying my skin, and the Vitamin C, Retinol, and Vitamin B all have lightened some existing acne scars. I am especially happy seeing how it treats the dark redness surrounding a pimple; it lightens it without excess dry, flaky skin. Not having flaky skin is a big plus for me and makes it so much easier to cover healing pimples with concealer during the day.

CONCLUSION: a one-step product to address multiple skin concerns. If you have bouts of adult acne, there is no need to forgo an anti-aging skin care program. Instanatural Age Defying Skin Clearing Serum gives fast results without dryness, redness or skin flaking. It heals and prevents new acne and fades existing acne scars and marks. Excellent product for multi-tasking your skin care needs!

Skincare: Aurora Cure Ultimate 20% Vitamin C Serum

September 23, 2016 · Leave a Comment

SUMMARY: Aurora Cure Ultimate Vitamin C Serum is a Professional Grade 20% Vitamin C, paired with Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, Horsetail, Gotu Kola, as well as Organic Aloe Vera and Jojoba. This ingredient cocktail makes for an anti-aging, acne fighting, wrinkle sacking, dark circle reducing powerhouse. There are lots of Vitamin C Serums, but this combination of ingredients provides a terrific combination for better skin fast. Oh, and it absorbs completely without being sticky or leaving a film on the skin.

Aurora Cure Ultimate 20% Vitamin C Serum

Aurora Cure Ultimate 20% Vitamin C Serum

WHO SHOULD USE A VITAMIN C SERUM?
In short, practically anybody. Vitamin C Serum addresses the source of the primary beauty-based skin complaints: increases collagen production, acne control, fading discoloration, and loss of luminance. Collagen production decreases sagging and wrinkles and restores a dewy glow to the skin. It also addresses deep skin layer scarring and age spots. Daily use of Vitamin C Serum can result in much younger, softer, even-tone skin within weeks.

CAN PEOPLE WITH SENSITIVE SKIN USE A PROFESSIONAL GRADE VITAMIN C SERUM?
Some with very sensitive skin find Vitamin C Serum too drying or too irritating. If you have sensitive skin, you might shy away from a Professional Strength product. Those with sensitive skin can still use Vitamin C Serums as long as they select a serum that includes balancing ingredients such as those found in Aurora Cure Ultimate Vitamin C Serum.

WHAT SETS AURORA CURE ULTIMATE VITAMIN C SERUM APART FROM OTHER SERUMS FOR USE BY BOTH SENSITIVE AND TYPICAL SKIN

Aurora Cure Ultimate Vitamin C Serum is a full Professional Strength 20% Vitamin C potency, but it also contains several supporting ingredients to enable sensitive and regular skin types to tolerate the treatment.

Aurora Cure Ultimate Vitamin C Serum has several supporting ingredients that soothe skin and allow it to tolerate the serum including Organic Aloe Vera and Organic Jojoba. Both Aloe Vera and Jojoba enhance the ability to tolerate the drying effects of Vitamin C without impairing the absorption of it within the skin. Witch Hazel is a topical anti-inflammatory, reducing any irritation and redness associated with Vitamin C Serum use. These ingredients help sensitive and non-sensitive skins make the most of an anti-aging Vitamin C serum routine.

IMPROVING SKIN: WHAT AND HOW AURORA CURE ULTIMATE VITAMIN C SERUM’S PROFESSIONAL STRENGTH INGREDIENTS ACCOMPLISH MAKING BETTER SKIN

I swear by Vitamin C Serum use, but it is the active ingredients paired with it that make all the difference when it comes to treating problems like aging, discoloration, sagging, wrinkles and dark circles.

20% Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a building block to build collagen, the cement that holds together the build blocks of the skin. Less collagen means weaker skin, loss of tone and radiance, wrinkles and sagging. More collagen means the prevention and partial reversal of these problems.

Other active ingredients include Hyaluronic Acid, Gotu Kola, Vitamin E, and Horsetail.

HYALURONIC ACID
Hyaluronic Acid is my favorite ingredient to pair with Vitamin C. First; it holds TONS of moisture. It just sucks moisture into your skin, plumping skin to temporarily but immediately fill out small wrinkles and crinkles, and smoothing sagging skin to dewy and plump skin. The second thing Hyaluronic Acid does is pull the active ingredients deeper into the skin, meaning Vitamin C reaches deeper layers of the skin with Hyaluronic Acid than it ever could without it, it is like a ticket to the VIP lounge of dermal layers. Vitamin C reaching deeper layers means increased collagen production within supportive skin layers and treatment deeper wrinkles, sagging, discoloration, old scars, and even dark circles can improve due to the powerful Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid duo. Aurora Cure Vitamin C contains a whopping 11% Hyaluronic Acid, which is very generous for the price of the bottle.

GOTU KOLA
Gotu Kola is new to anti-aging skin care but has long been used for wound healing because of its’ ability to promote collagen production. Gotu Kola in a Vitamin C Serum is great as it calls the body to action to make collagen, and the Vitamin C provides the building blocks for collagen production. What a team!

VITAMIN E
Vitamin E paired with Vitamin C it gives skin softness and pliability. Much of the rougher texture of some skin patches improves.

HORSETAIL
Horsetail makes for more flexible skin, especially in connective skin layers and tissue. Wrinkles and sagging are not just the results of skin surface aging, but laxity in supportive structure ligaments, muscles and connective layers that hold up facial skin. Horsetail adds strength to these connective layers to keep the skin structure as pliable yet taut as possible. Horsetail is also benefited by the inclusion of the Hyaluronic Acid to reach deeper skin layers. As a side benefit, Horsetail also lightens discoloration, particularly the dark shadow area of wrinkles.

Aurora Cure Ultimate 20% Vitamin C Serum

Aurora Cure Ultimate 20% Vitamin C Serum

APPLICATION
There is no unpleasant scent, and the serum is not sticky, it dries down well. It is more of a thick watery liquid than a gel or serum texture, so there is no residue or stickiness. I apply my moisturizer and my eye cream directly over the serum after about 5 minutes.

Use daily for best results. Many people pair a Vitamin C serum during the day with a Retinol at night, but twice a day use of a Vitamin C Serum will fade discoloration and acne scarring faster.

Aurora Cure Ultimate 20% Vitamin C Serum

Aurora Cure Ultimate 20% Vitamin C Serum

TIP: It is imperative to moisturize when using Vitamin C Serum. Aurora Care Ultimate Vitamin C Serum works synergistically with their Hyaluronic Acid Serum. And bonus, skin looks and feels fantastic when this duo is used together! So plump, dewy, smooth and youthful looking!

RESULTS
These ingredients together hit all the bases when seeking a high-quality Vitamin C Serum: ingredients to soothe and nourish, increase tolerance to strong ingredients, ingredients that cause immediate improvement, some that support collagen production and skin structure, and some that fade existing scars and brown spots. But the real question is – how long do you use a Vitamin C to see results?

With daily use, acne control happens quickly; you’ll see improvement within the week. The fading of scarring and age spots is generally within a few weeks, and collagen production shows within about four – six weeks time when sagging and wrinkles significantly diminish. The Hyaluronic Acid, Jojoba and Aloe and Vitamin E give a softer look to skin immediately upon application.

CONCLUSION: I am very pleased to have tried this Serum, it has a powerhouse of ingredients that are not often seen in tandem but together they provide an excellent Vitamin C Serum that applies quickly, dries down completely, and skin looks dewy and plump while it is worn. Highly recommended!

Skincare: Serum Ceuticals Lumina Lightening Serum

August 6, 2016 · Leave a Comment

Serum Ceuticals Lumina Lightening Serum

Serum Ceuticals Lumina Lightening Serum

This is a concentrated serum with no water or chemical preservatives. It is to lighten the skin, but it is NOT a whitening serum that bleaches the skin with the intent of being fairer-skinned. This is geared towards reversing hyperpigmentation due to sun damage and age spots without disrupting your natural skintone.

WHY USE A LIGHTENING SERUM ON AGING SKIN
I noticed as I got older, my skin got more brown spots, especially in areas that the sunlight would hit such as the top of my cheekbones, my forehead, and my nose. I got a few random brown spots – better known as age spots – as well. I noticed my skin was losing its’ rosy glow. While I generally associate wrinkles and sagging with aging, these are structural changes to the skin. But another sign of aging that is easier to remedy is the lackluster look skin often has as it ages, in part, due to duller skin and hyperpigmentation due to sun damage. These dark sun-damage spots often occur diffusely across areas one would instead wish to highlight – such as the top of the cheekbone. Having a splattering of dark spots in these areas It is almost like having contour where highlighter should be.

APPLICATION
It dispenses from the bottle a drop at a time, and not much is needed. It is an oily consistency. It can be applied directly to the skin or combined with other serums or creams. I apply it with my Glucan Cream made by the same company. The reason for this is that while it is not as powerful as a peel, it is a potent treatment, so pairing it with a moisturizer that soothes is helpful to avoid redness and irritation.

RESULTS
I was surprised how quickly my skin looked dewy, and how it did seem to tackle some uneven areas such as the skin on and around my nose. The darker spots on my upper cheekbones seem lighter. My skintone itself has not changed, only the dark hyperpigmented areas have begun to fade. It is not an overnight change, but I am happy so far with the results.

Trophy Skin RejuvadermMD Handheld Microdermabrasion System

December 16, 2015 · Leave a Comment

The amazing result I had with RejuvadermMD Microdermabrasion System by Trophy Skin surprised me since my skin is not flaky or rough, so I didn’t expect there would be much to exfoliate or buff. But I was wrong.

The RejuvadermMD Microdermabrasion System is an impressive tool.  It diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and leaves skin brighter –  that pinkish sort of awake, peppy younger, and SO very smooth and glowing. I keep touching my face to feel how soft with each use. I knew immediately it was a good purchase.

Trophy Skin RejuvadermMD Handheld Microdermabrasion System

Trophy Skin RejuvadermMD Handheld Microdermabrasion System

My exfoliating routine was gentle, but lacking, as my skin can get lackluster: soft washcloths, at-home use of glycolic acid pads or Brazilian Peel AHA, gentle fruit acid washes, and on rare occasion, Clinique Seven Day Scrub, especially around the mouth.  I moisturize well and of course, use sunscreen.

Here is an overview of the Microdermabrasion Tool and its’ different functions and a review with tips and tricks of each of the included heads and tips.

THE WAND TOOL

It is powerful for an at-home tool that comes with three heads: a diamond tip dermabrasion head, an extractor tip, and an infuser head to help serums penetrate the skin.

HOW TO USE THE WAND:  The wand comes with four speed settings, one lit up dot being the gentlest suction and speed. Press the button continuously until the first green light appears.

The tricky part is keeping constant contact of the suction wand on the skin, or else you “skip” sections. It is a balance between not pulling on delicate areas of skin too much while still getting benefit from the product, so people with less resilient, more mature skin might want to limit where they use the wand to avoid more delicate areas.

DIAMOND TIP:

Trophy Skin RejuvadermMD Microdermabrasion System Diamond Wand Tip

Trophy Skin RejuvadermMD Microdermabrasion System Diamond Wand Tip

The circular diamond tip sands and buffs the skin while suction pulls away the resulting dead skin debris that become fine powdery debris whisked away by the suction.  Brown spots look lighter and smoother. Surface gunk clogging pores and dry skin slough off so skin is less clogged. Wrinkles diminish when the dark impurities are sucked off it leaves the area smoother and able to better reflect light, making a wrinkle appear less deep and less noticeable.  It also gives a smoother surface to apply makeup.

Used Filter

That was the stuff on my face. Ew.

Want to see the gunk that comes out of a face, the face you think has been scrubbed clean? Yeah, it’s not pretty.

Yep, this is the gunk sitting on your face right now.

Yep, this is the gunk sitting on your face right now.

Like a facial, don’t do dermabrasion right before an event, as tempting as it might be once you feel how soft and glowing skin is after the treatment. But you also can get red and irritated for a bit. I do it at least one to two days before to allow myself time to moisturize and hydrate.  Microdermabrasion + NuFace Trinity leaves skin SO glowing and youthful.  There are four settings on the tool. Start at “one” and work up, it is doing more than you may realize at first. Delicate areas of skin will be red after, but not too irritated and the redness diminishes quickly once you practice technique.  Try to avoid using the wand directly on active blemishes (more on that later) but blackheads and whiteheads will be much less noticeable.

I especially like how the microdermabrasion addresses eleven lines and the lines near the mouth. It is also great when directed at neck wrinkles and areas of the chest and décolletage that get less-than-dewy looking and need a bit of attention, especially when dehydrated.

Used Filter

OK, I assume you have seen enough of this.

You can use it almost anywhere, including shoulders and upper back; two areas I didn’t realize were a little neglected despite using body scrubs on those areas. Moisturize after use.

Filter

Once you get the hang of it, advance to higher and more powerful settings on the tool, especially around the forehead and sides of your neck, shoulders, and chest.  I also have been using it on an old shaving scrape that left a light scar on my legs, and on my hands, but it is a challenge to maintain the suction on an uneven surface.

TIP: When using the diamond tip, ALWAYS make sure one of the little black pads the size of the pencil eraser top are in the wand to prevent the tool from getting all that gunk on your face embedded into the tool. The diamond tip buffs skin so that a fine powder of debris comes off and lands on these black pads and looks like the photo seen above right.

EXTRACTOR HEAD
Don’t use the extractor attachment on the same location on the same day as the dermabrasion diamond head. The extractor pulls sebum and blackheads out of your skin. I didn’t expect much since I don’t have many blackheads, just some in the nostril “curl”. At first glance, the extractor doesn’t seem to have done much, and then I took a peek inside, and well, EWW.

I am a dainty skin-obsessed lady, I (judiciously) use one of those metal black head extractor tools, and I exfoliate and ALWAYS remove my makeup at night. So the fact that this much blackhead and sebum-y gunk was just sitting

These pictures are disgusting. You’ve been warned.

Trophy Skin RejuvadermMD Handheld Microdermabrasion System Extraction Head

Here is a slideshow of some more pictures and how to use the device, and because there are more gross pictures of things you really don’t want to think are in your skin, I added some classy music to the background.

http://www.stylechicks.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Trophy-Skin-RejuvadermMD-Microdermabrasion-System.m4v

QUESTION:  CAN THE EXTRACTOR HEAD SUCTION OUT THE CONTENTS OF A PUSTULE PIMPLE?

Friendly advice: I was tempted to see if the extractor head could just pull the contents of an active, noticeable pimple that had formed a “head” and looked ready to be extracted with a gentle nudge from my handy metal blackhead extractor. The suction extractor tip is powerful, but not the tool for this kind of acne, because the suction held on one spot too long leaves an angry red mark on the surrounding skin leaves too much of an angry red, for lack of a better word, “hickey-like” mark, at least it did on me.  Leave it to the Dermatologists, a trusty blemish extractor tool, apply a hot compress, or zap it with a good topical blemish cream.  This is more a tool for blackheads and whiteheads and pre-emptive skin care that removes the oil and debris trapping dead skin layers, leading to a less pimple-friendly environment in the long run.

Trophy Skin RejuvadermMD Handheld Microdermabrasion System Infusion Tip

Trophy Skin RejuvadermMD Handheld Microdermabrasion System Infusion Tip

THE INFUSER TIP HEAD
I am underwhelmed on the infuser head; it is just not doing it for me, which is a disappointment because I was excited about that feature. This company has made a solid quality product in the RejuvadermMD, so I would be excited to try their Labelle Ultrasonic Skin Spatula for product infusion.

VERDICT

This is a good tool especially for clogged or flaking skin, skin with brown spots and fine wrinkles, blackheads, and skin that could be smoother. Be careful around delicate areas, but it is very useful on skin on the neck and shoulders that should be treated like facial skin but often is subject to “body skin” exfoliating measures. Even if you don’t feel much need to exfoliate, this tool leaves skin with a fresh, youthful glow.
