Vitamin C serum is a holy grail product when it comes to tackling whatever skincare problem ails you. It treats sun damage, acne, acne scars, discoloration, age spots, fine lines, skin texture, and enlarged pores all while promoting collagen production. But even Vitamin C needs a little help from its’ friends.

In the case of Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum, those friends come in the form of some skin-friendly actives that are packed with skin-nourishing vitamins, hydration, lipids, fatty acids and other goodies that keep skin acting younger and looking vibrant.

Every active in this formulation has a corresponding buddy ingredient. Each active has an improved mechanism because of their buddy.

A solid formulation where all the ingredients support each other

When Actives Are BFFs

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum has active ingredients that work together. Some examples:

Konjac + Hyaluronic Acid

The Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac Acid combination do something special.

Both Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac have high hygroscopic properties. They pull moisture from the air. The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus the glucomannan in konjac maximize their combined water absorption capacity. Once they absorb into the skin, they link. They attract water and swell in the skin. I mean, really, really swell with water. All the can get. So much water. It gives the skin a nice plump look while simultaneously treating.

The Three Amigos

Ferulic, C, and E are all anti-aging antioxidants. Awesome individually, but together they are special. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology:

“Ferulic acid alone (and vitamins C and E) provide partial protection but vitamins C, E and ferulic acid [altogether] provide virtually complete protection.” [1]

The Vitamin C is part of a Serum Duo with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum but also available as a stand-alone product.  The Mad Hippie Serum Duo has an astounding number of actives between them, yet don’t irritate the skin.

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and Exfoliating Serum Duo

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and Exfoliating Serum Duo

Let’s examine these active ingredients in detail.

✽

Active Ingredient Profile

Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate)

A water-soluble C particularly effective on acne treatment and prevention. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is a stable precursor of vitamin C that ensures a constant delivery of vitamin C into the skin. [2] In layperson terms, it won’t turn brown or go bad. SAP has a strong antimicrobial effect.

Konjac Root

This unusual looking specimen seen below is Konjac Root. It contains glucomannan, a moisturizer similar to the natural hyaluronic found in young skin. It makes skin look and act younger.  It penetrates the upper layer of the epidermis and hydrates the surface.

Konjac root also contains a slew of skin-friendly vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, plus lipids and fatty acids. It smooths fine wrinkles and promotes collagen and elastin production.

Konjac also contains copper, a skincare superstar that builds collagen and the elusive but skin-vital elastin. Elastin is crucial because it reduces sagging and wrinkles and gives skin a springy and healthy look. Copper is rare and pricey skincare, which makes its’ presence in this formula all the more awesome. Copper also plays very well with the other actives in this formula. [3]

Konjac Root

ferulic acid

Ferulic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid) is naturally found in plant cell walls. Ferulic acid makes Vitamin C more stable, and is also an anti-oxidant. Ferulic acid is particularly good at protecting against aging caused by free radicals and environmental stress factors.

Hyaluronic acid

In addition to the humectant and plumping properties described above, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a microcarrier. Like a friend with VIP access, it helps active molecules penetrate deeper into the skin for better results.

HA assists all the actives and is particularly good at the dermal delivery of sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP).

Vitamin E

A protective antioxidant that lessens discoloration.  E makes damaged skin soft and pliable again while reducing wrinkle and fine line formation.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage

Clary sage strengthens the skin while balancing excess sebum. It calms and rejuvenates the skin in a manner similar to lavender but without as strong of a scent.

It contains linalyl acetate, an anti-inflammatory that heals skin irritation.[4]

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile flower

Chamomile flower

Chamomile Extract is excellent in a formulation with powerful actives because it contains flavones. These flavones inhibit the production of inflammation, even in deeper skin layers. [5]

Meanwhile, The apigenin in Chamomile protects the skin barrier. [6] This gentle and hypoallergenic extract soothes skin, heals burns, and is great for helping skin recover and benefit from chemical peels.

Chamomile Extract is an antioxidant that also kills the bacteria that causes acne while soothing skin. [7]

The chamomile helps enable the daily use of this serum without irritation or skin peeling.

Chamomile

✽

What We Love About It

This is a particularly impressive C serum. As a stable C, it is good to the last drop: no degrading or turning brown.

The ingredient combo is exceptionally effective and hits all the bases.  Skin appears refined after use without redness or tightness. There is no peeling skin or dryness. It is powerful but there is no need to skip a day due to irritation.

Unlike many C serums, it is not sticky or tacky on dry down. It doesn’t pill or get crusty under my sunscreen and makeup.✽class=”toc_list”

The Vitamin C is part of a Serum Duo with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum but also available as a stand-alone product.  Read about Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum ingredients and our experience here.

How to Use This Serum

After cleansing, apply just a half a dropper full daily to the face and throat. Follow with a moisturizer so the hyaluronic and Konjac acids can work their moisture-binding, skin-plumping, hygroscopic magic.

Apply twice a day if this is your only serum, or once a day if using the MH Exfoliative Serum or another nighttime favorite.

Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

✽

RESULTS

The impact of Konjac and C together is so impressive: dark spots fade fairly quickly. Paired with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum at night, this duo makes for an impressive one-two punch against aging and skin issues like discoloration, acne, fine lines, and skin texture. And it does it with zero irritation.

If skin aging, poor texture, acne or sun damage make you want to apply ALL the things, this C Serum and the serum duo contain many excellent actives in the right combination and proportions to get the job done without causing any irritation.

✽

WHERE TO FIND IT

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum is available at Mad Hippie as part of a serum combo or separately at Mad Hippie and Ulta, and also Whole Foods stores

Apply one half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

The Mad Hippie Serum Duo has an astounding number of actives between them, yet don’t irritate the skin.

How to use ProBerry No More Yellow GojiBerry Shampoo

February 16, 2020 · 10 Comments

Curly-haired gals who color and highlight have fewer brass toning options. Brass toners are notoriously chemical-laden. They dehydrate already damaged tresses. So I volunteered in a heartbeat to try a hair rehabilitating brass toner. It’s called ProBerry No More Yellow Gojiberry Shampoo. It contains Certified Goji Berry Extract, known to repair damaged hair, soothe dry scalps, and promote hair growth. And as the title indicates, it completely negates brassy yellow tones.
ProBerry No More Yellow Goji Berry Shampoo

ProBerry No More Yellow Goji Berry Shampoo

I cringe when my sunkissed highlights turn brassy. And right when my hair could use some love, I further dehydrate it with a brass shampoo toning treatment that leaves dry hair crunchy feeling. Even the brass conditioners from the salon aren’t all that conditioning. It is like trading brass for dryness.

Why use A brass shampoo that rehabilitates hair

Goji Berries improve hair and scalp health

By the time your hair has brassy tones, your hair has probably seen some things. Bad things like hard water, oxidation, bleaching, color correcting, color processing, highlights, or dyes.

Or perhaps your hair just experiences natural aging causing a yellowing or dingy tone on gray or white hair.

Are you a natural blonde with healthy but too yellow locks? Then keep your blonde hair healthy with a safe toner that hydrates.

packaging

The shampoo comes boxed and capped. There are directions and a click-lock pump dispenser. I like this feature to avoid shampoo leakage and pigment staining when not in use.

What Makes ProBerry special

  1. Many anti-brass/purple toner shampoos dehydrate the hair, leaving hair feeling dry and crunchy. Many toning shampoos include some botanical to offset the damaging effects of toning. Goji Berries offers significant benefits
  2. It doesn’t leave a weird residue film atop hair that is detectable in office or bright sunlight.
  3. it is the most intense blue-violet purple I’ve seen, and I’ve tried most of them, from drug store to salon to professional only products. This is not a watered-down lavender. It is deep blue PURPLE. There will be no yellow tones after one wash.
  4. No parabens.
One wash leaves brassy hair cool and healthy.

ProBerry No More Yellow Gojiberry Shampoo is a deeply pigmented formulation that rehabilitates hair

Very pigmented!

curly girl approved ingredients

If you have naturally curly, coarse or brittle hair, brass control is difficult as already delicate hair once dyed or bleached can become practically parched. All the ingredients in this formulation are considered safe for curly hair and dry hair types. Notably:

  • Most of the Curly Girl community consider the cleansing agent in this formulation, Decyl glucoside, to be gentle and safe for delicate curls and brittle hair types.
  • Acid violet 43 is considered safe within an otherwise safe formulation, such as this one.
  • Glycerin is a natural, non-toxic, vegan-friendly humectant that helps hair retain moisture. It is hydrating for all hair types and especially helpful to curly, coarse and colored hair.
  • Free of parabens and sulfates.

And notably, this formulation contains Lycium Barbarum fruit extract, better known as Goji Berries.

Goji Berry Fast Facts

Goji berries in this shampoo has vitamins to repair damaged hair and aid in hair growth.

The Goji berries in this shampoo have vitamins to repair damaged hair and aid in hair growth. Lots of products with natural ingredients make promises, but Goji berries are packed with several research-backed nutrients.

Goji berries are also known as wolfberries. They are considered a superfood. These berries are grown without pesticides or other chemicals. Goji berries have nutrients to repair damaged follicles, nourish the scalp and even help healthy hair growth.

Research shows the following topical application properties for hair and scalp:

  • Goji berries are rich in vitamin C to synthesize the collagen necessary for hair growth.[1]
  • Goji Berries contain 19 amino acids, the building blocks of the hair protein keratin. Amino acids penetrate the hair shaft to repair and strengthen. Amino acids are also hydrating and increase the efficacy of other hydrating humectant agents in this formula, such as glycerin.[2]
  • Goji berries contain trace minerals to topically feed follicles including zinc, iron, calcium, germanium, selenium, and phosphorus.
  • Copper aids hair growth and follicle health.  The topical application of copper increases the size of shrunken hair follicles. It stops hair thinning and often reduces premature graying. [3]
  • Goji berries are antioxidants that contain vitamins B1, B2, B6, and vitamin E, plus beta-sisterol, an anti-inflammatory agent.
  • Linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid has anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties for hair and scalp. Omega-6 makes hair feel lush and stronger. [4]

Intense deep blue purple Pigment

This is a very intense violet purple. More saturated and powerful than others you may have tried. See the photos in the pigment section below.

Who an intense blue-violet toner can help

ProBerry No More Yellow Gojiberry Shampoo removes unwanted yellow tones from:

  • Dingy white or gray hair that needs brightening
  • Natural or dyed Platinums and Blondes
  • Brunettes or Brondes with blonde highlights that have gone brassy
Keep yellow tones out of your natural or enhanced blonde

THE PIGMENT

The pigment looks almost black in its’ concentrated form when pumped out of the bottle. Check out the hue of this shampoo as seen here with some fingerpainting with ProBerry on a white plate.

DIRECTIONS OF USE

This shampoo comes with a sturdy pair of gloves. The toner pigment can stain skin, nails, and cuticles, so use the gloves to disperse and massage in the shampoo.

Comes with a set of gloves so hands/fingernails don’t get stained

Shake well before use to distribute the pigment.

Just two to five minutes is enough to remove the yellow brassy tones!

No More Yellow Directions: Just two to five minutes is enough to remove the yellow brassy tones!

My Experience

I am a dark brunette with red undertones dyed to a 7 base with 8 and 9 level blonde highlights. Proberry No More Yellow tones my highlights nicely without disrupting my base. While intended for blondes and platinums, the deep blue-purple is effective on brondes as well.

I am impressed with the moisturizing benefits of this shampoo and find it especially useful after coloring or when yellow tones creep in, once or twice a month.

If you are enduring a color correction, this hydrating purple toning shampoo is a must-have.

Tips & Observations:

  • It is very concentrated. Platinum, white and lighter shades can pick up a purple tinge if left in too long. Leave it in for only a few minutes and build up. Since it is good for your hair, you can always repeat.
  • It is not especially lathery. Don’t let the lack of suds trick you into using too much.
  • Use the gloves even if you typically skip gloves with other toning shampoos.
  • Dry Toning: Many have success combing purple shampoo onto dry hair and leaving it on for 15-20 minutes. This gives better control, greater pigment, and more even distribution on brassy sections and highlights. We recommend caution on this dry hair approach when using ProBerry No More Yellow. First, it isn’t really necessary from the standpoint of an adequate pigment deposit. If you want to comb through and control placement, don’t leave ProBerry No More Yellow in as long as the less pigmented formulas. At least the first time, only for a minute or two at the most. It is a more hydrating treatment when hair is wet.

Very concentrated pigment, a little goes a long way!

We are so impressed by this gentle paraben-free formulation to rehabilitate dry, colored or highlighted hair while fighting brassiness with an especially deep blue-purple tone.

A Vitamin C for sensitive skin, it is a water-soluble Vitamin C derivative. Stable in formulations. Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is less exfoliating than other Cs but still produces collagen and suppresses melanin formation.

Ascorbyl Glucoside

CONSISTENCY & APPLICATION

Since it contains rich oils, I thought the application might be messy.

The capsule contents are thicker than oil, something of a liquidy honey consistency. So I expected it to be too stiff to spread easily on the skin.

But it smoothly and immediately sank into my skin. And the finish was not at all oily or sticky even when applied directly.

Massaging it into the face and throat feels relaxing and spa-like. It helps everything:

  • chronically dry lips
  • eleven lines
  • undereye dryness.

EmerginC Hydra-Repair Intensive Topical Infusion capsule form makes this rich treatment portable for beauty emergencies.

Avocado

What are the skincare benefits of Avocado Oil?

  • It hydrates like natural skin sebum and improves skin elasticity.
  • It contains Chlorophyll, an antioxidant that protects from premature aging.
  • Rich in fatty acids Omega 3 and 6, it strengthens the skin lipid barrier.
  • Vitamins C, D, and E, Avocado Oil promotes wound healing and collagen production [1] without clogging pores.
  • Avocado oil also contains oleic acid, a fatty acid that reduces inflammation and redness while fighting wrinkles.
  • Unlike other fatty oils that stay on the skin surface, Avocado absorbs into the skin for better hydration potential.

Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E)

Tocopheryl Acetate is Vitamin E.

E makes damaged skin soft and pliable again while reducing wrinkle formation.

Ceramide-3

Ceramides are fatty acids that hold cells together to protect the epidermis.

What are the skincare benefits of Ceramides?

Ceramides create a wonderful protective barrier layer. They hold in moisture and plump the skin.
Natural ceramides deplete with age. Even younger skin loses ceramides when using harsh cleansers or drying skincare products.

Ceramide 3 keeps skin hydrated without being greasy.

Ceramide 3 is often used as a moisturizing ingredient. This enhances the smooth product finish while repairing the skin barrier.

Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate)

An antioxidant found naturally in our skin. It is a less potent form of retinoid that the skin converts.

Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate) is a natural form of Vitamin A that helps with wrinkles and fine lines.

It also boosts collagen production to make skin look younger and plumper. It promotes cell regeneration.

It extendedly smoothes and hydrates.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is one of the cleanest ingredients with no reported toxicity, it is safe enough to be food grade.

Capric Triglyceride naturally occurs in palm kernel or coconut oil.

It is a mixed ester composed of caprylic and capric fatty acids attached to glycerin. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is a natural skin replenishing emollient that creates a barrier on the skin’s surface, which helps to reduce skin dryness by decreasing the loss of moisture.
