The Science of Beauty: Can Tamanu Oil Really Help Scars & Stretch Marks?

June 19, 2019 · 7 Comments

When we hear there’s an organic oil that can be used for skin concerns such as anti-aging, acne, stretch marks, scars, razor burn, bug bites, and can be used for softer, smoother hair, we’re interested. But we are also skeptical. What does the research say? Anecdotal evidence supports beautiful hair and skin on those who use Tamanu Oil. Many people swear by Tamanu Oil for clearing up acne or fading an old scar. But does science back the Tamanu Oil folklore? What is Tamanu Oil? And how do you use it? We did Tamanu Oil Research.

Tamanu Oil nut on a Tamanu Tree.

Tamanu Oil comes from the nuts of the Tamanu Tree.

ABOUT TAMANU OIL

The locals call it “Green Gold”. Pacific island folk medicine uses Tamanu Oil for a host of natural remedies. In Southern India, Tamanu Oil is used for many skin ailments. In Taiwan, it is used for hair. Tamanu Oil has gained attention because of its’ rare beauty benefits. The oil comes from a nut of the Tamanu Tree. The Tamanu Tree is commonly found in Polynesia. Within the region, Tamanu Oil is prized for hair, skin and a host of medical uses. Ample anecdotal evidence exists for these uses. Countless people swear by Tamanu Oil. But there have been limited research studies on Tamanu Oil efficacy. Studies to date show a promising organic oil with many versatile uses.

What do we know about Tamanu Oil?

While used for years in Polynesian regions, Tamanu Oil is only a recent discovery to many of us.

Tamanu Oil is a lovely golden green color with a slight nutty scent.

Tamanu Oil is a lovely golden green color with a slightly nutty scent.

Tamanu oil is a topical healing agent that is:

  • antineuralgic
  • anti-inflammatory
  • antimicrobial
  • antibiotic
  • anti-oxidant

TAMANU OIL RESEARCH STUDIES

Tamanu Oil has been long associated with many health and beauty benefits. Research studies are still developing for the documentation of several promising medical uses. There is even research into Tamanu Oil’s potential benefit for cancer and HIV.(1)

But other Tamanu Oil uses are already well documented. These areas include the healing of burns and skin diseases. (2)

Tamanu Oil is both anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Tamanu Oil is used for skin conditions such as:

  • acne scars
  • burns
  • dry scalp
  • eczema
  • mosquito bites
  • psoriasis
  • stings
  • stretch marks
  • flaky, scaly or dry skin.

Older stretch marks are notoriously difficult to treat. What would make Tamanu Oil more effective than any other remedy?
Its’ rare fatty acid profile.

RESEARCH: HOW TAMANU OIL HEALS SCARS & MARKS

There has been studies of the healing properties of Tamanu Oil. Of interest is the special fatty properties of Tamanu Oil. These fatty properties help soften wounds, scars and stretch marks.

Organic Tamanu oil has a unique fatty acid profile. It has an unusual fatty acid called calophyllic acid. There are few studies on Calophyllum (calophyllic acid). But studies do exist, and there are enough to give credence to the skin healing ability of Tamanu Oil. Various studies verified the wound healing, safety, and antibacterial properties of Calophyllum (3).

This supports the anecdotal reports of the skin improvement seen with the traditional use of Tamanu Oil for at least scars, burns, and stretch marks.

CONCLUSION

Tamanu Oil is an exciting and promising Oil for a host of topical and medical uses. Tamanu Oil research is still limited. But studies are still in development to further explore potential benefits. What we do know is that Tamanu Oil is effective on several skin conditions and treating damaged skin.

WARNING: Tamanu is a nut. Tamanu oil should be avoided by those with nut allergies.

Read why we love the Eddie Funkhouser LuxLight Shadow Palette and our experience with how to best use vegan eyeshadows to reduce fallout.

The Eddie Funkhouser LuxLight Shadow Palette has ten lovely and highly useable pans

About the Eddie Funkhouser LuxLight Professional Shadow Palette

  • This palette has ten shadow pans of nude and neutral matte, shimmer and full metallic shimmer shades.
  • It is a creamy formula and highly pigmented.
  • Vegan and non-GMO.
  • Paraben free.
  • The palette lid has an integrated mirror for touch-ups.

LuxLight Professional Eyeshadow Palette contains blendable mattes and shimmers

THE Essential Eye Brush Set

There are five brushes in the Essential Eye Brush Set.

The brushes are well made; full and soft with shaped bristles. The bristles do not fall out with use or washing. The handles have a nice grip. I find the array of brushes useful for the initial base application, blending and precise product placement along the crease.

The set includes some useful basics including a small tapered brush for the crease and undereye shadow application or pressing powder into the eyeliner line. There is also a tapered blending brush and a crease brush.

My EDDIE FUNKHOUSER LUXLIGHT PROFESSIONAL SHADOW PALETTE EXPERIENCE

There is a significant color payoff with these shades, very pigmented. They blend well.

How to Best Use: Tips for Vegan Eyeshadow Application

There is fallout during application, especially with the coppery and plum shimmers, but I didn’t have a fallout problem once the shades were blended well.

A layer of loose powder on your undereye area or shadow shields are helpful if you are doing a smokey metallic look.

Eddie Funkhouser Eyeshadow Application tip:

“To give your eye makeup a high fashion edge, contour the crease of the eye with a dark shade using an Eye Contour Brush. Apply a second application of the same shade to the crease of the eye using a Crease Brush.”

Eddie Funkhouser Cosmetics Sexy Mama Bedroom Eyes Palette

About The Sexy Mama Bedroom Eyes Palette

The Eddie Funkhouser Sexy Mama Bedroom Eyes Palette features:

  • Shimmering white, not gray enough to be quite silver.
  • Lavender rose
  • Smokey purple
  • Matte smokey taupe
Close up of shadow pans

This quad is highly versatile. The colors work for basic day makeup and transition to nighttime and weekend looks.

High pigment and smooth formulation. There is some fallout during application. But once the shadow is on, it stays put, even after several hours. The shimmer shades blend well over the matte taupe. Layering doesn’t look cakey, even when combining matte and shimmer shades.

EddieFunkhouser.com gives product application tips. A suggestion for this palette: “contour the crease of the eye with a dark shade using an Eye Contour Brush. Apply a second application of the same shade to the crease of the eye using a Crease Brush.”

Eddie Funkhouser BONUS

In the Eddie Funkhouser Mother’s Day Shop Buy the palette and get a bonus All Eye Need Eye Set.

The All Eye Need Eye Set contains:

  • Quatro Variable Lash Mascara has four incremented of dots on the cap. This is the FX Dial with 4 levels from natural (1) to extreme (4). “Click” it to the desired intensity. I really like the wand brush shape as the bristles are highly defined for even application. Long-wearing and BLACK BLACK BLACK lashes. Doesn’t make my eyes itchy and doesn’t flake. Conditioning formula.
Unique bristles define and separate while coating and combing every lash

  • Creamy Graffiti Creme Eye Pencil has a built-in smudger and sharpener. It is a VIVID JET BLACK. Create a softer line with a light hand and using the smudger tip. The black tones of the two liners match. This is ideal for filling in bare spots on your basic line or for touchups. Still perfecting your eyeliner game or are out of practice? This pencil is basically goof-proof. It is long-lasting for such a creamy formula. Built-in sharpener keeps the line crisp.
  • The Ultra Definition Eye Lining Stylus is truly excellent for drawing an even, precise liquid line. There is no skipping or tugging. The flow is even and continuous. The brush tip is thin but can deliver a thick line when angled. Once it is dry, it stays put.

One of my biggest liquid liner pet peeves is an uneven flow. I find it results in some thicker line sections that require the rest of the eye to be re-lined in to even out the line.

I was able to draw a very thin and even line with the Ultra Definition Eye Lining Stylus using the tip straight on. It is just the right amount of liner for the office to look awake and alert. Using the Ultra Definition Eye Lining Stylus on an angle does a thicker cat-eye top line. Ideal for filling in between lashes with tiny dots for a lusher looking lash line.

It wears well without major touchups. I am not gifted at the art of eyelining and value a product that makes it easy to get it right the first time. I particularly like the precision of this liner. I can get my line as thin (or thick) as I want without lots of fuss.

10% Glycolic AHA-Alpha Hydroxy Acid Serum for Chemical Peel-Pro Grade

May 22, 2016 · Leave a Comment

10% Glycolic (AHA-Alpha Hydroxy) Acid Serum for Chemical Peel-Pro Grade

10% Glycolic (AHA-Alpha Hydroxy) Acid Serum for Chemical Peel-Pro Grade

This Serum is a 10% Pro-Grade AHA Glycolic Acid. I started using Glycolic Acid in my late twenties because I preferred to use peels to remove my dead skin instead of exfoliating it, my skin was just a smooth and more even in tone and texture without having to irritate it with grains and scrubbing. I read skin over 30 and sensitive skin respond better to peels than scrubs, and I found this to be true.

I especially like Glycolic Acid because skin doesn’t visibly peel and slough, which can sometimes be uneven and leave behind the partially peeled skin. Rather, with Glycolic Acid, dead skin just seems to melt away, and skin glows. It also helps with acne and blackheads. The reason is that Glycolic loosens the “cement” that binds dry and dead skin, so it just loosens and virtually melts dead skin, but it doesn’t alter fresher skin unless it irritates it with chemical additives.

As much as I love Glycolic Acid, it can sting and make skin red, and the chemical additives in many Glycolic Acids can irritate skin enough that it needs to be washed off fairly quickly. Ideally, if one can leave it on the skin for 10-30 minutes, it makes a huge difference on how much peeling can occur.

I like that the Serum Ceuticals AHA Glycolic has both soothing and treating ingredients in the serum. These help the skin tolerate the Glycolic remaining on the skin for longer periods of time because this can give the best short term smoothness and long term collagen regenerating result. It also does not contain any harsh chemical additives that irritate my skin, so I was able to leave the serum on my skin for a full 30 minutes, which is about 15 minutes longer than I have tolerated any other Glycolic. Like all their products, Serum Ceuticals uses a natural charge to preserve their products, which means it is more powerful with a longer shelf life than other organic/natural AHA’s and causes less irritation than AHA’s filled with chemical preservatives.

APPLICATION
Test a small dab of the serum on your earlobe 48-72 hours before use to see if you get any irritation. I did this step even though I have used AHA’s before.

There is no detectable scent, it is a watery consistency and comes in a bottle with an inverted dropper than only dispenses a drop at a time.

If you have not used AHA’s before, you might want only to leave the serum on about 10 minutes the first time. If you have used AHA’s, check the mirror frequently for redness but try for the full 30 minutes if you can tolerate it. I have sensitive skin and use Retinol but still was able to tolerate it for the full 30 minutes.

First, I slathered the serum on my forehead since that skin is less sensitive. Then I lightly applied it all over my face except the eye area, paying extra attention to some dark brown spots and wrinkles, the nasal folds, and the areas that my pores seem larger on both sides of the nose in the area of my cheek below my undereye bags. I also have some dark brown sunspots on the top of my cheekbones that I made sure had a good layer of the serum.

I didn’t feel any stinging or irritation, but at almost 30 minutes the apples of my cheeks had some redness, but it was not uncomfortable. I washed it off and applied a light moisturizer. If you have the Serum Ceuticals Ceramide, this is a great post-peel product to use to reduce any redness quickly. The redness lasted a few hours, but it was not painful and returned to normal. I did feel some skin exfoliate off my jawline, but mostly it was just smoother and even, especially my forehead. Two whiteheads that were just stuck in my skin and would not come out despite topical medicines expelled while washing the serum off my face and some clogging of blackheads around my nose and cheek disappeared. A pimple that was a just red bump for an extended period shrunk in size. My forehead wrinkle appeared shallow. My skin was very soft. I took two days off and did it again for the full thirty minutes.

I also used this on my hands for the full 30 minutes. My hands show more aging than my face does due to not applying sunscreen on my hands all these years. One treatment on my hands lightened some of the darker skin on my knuckles and cleaned up my chronically dry and uneven cuticles. The lines on my hands do not appear as deep. There was no irritation or redness.

Highly recommended for use 1-2 times a week, does not cause irritation even on my sensitive skin and I could see improvement after the first use. Will continue with the full recommended course and I will be purchasing this AHA again.

I received this item for testing and unbiased review purposes. If you have any questions about my experience with it, leave it in the comments section below and I’ll do my best to answer it!
