Sweetflexx: Resistance Band Leggings for on the Go Fitness

November 21, 2017 · 6 Comments

I was headed to the gym last week, but it was such a gorgeous day down here at Yale that I just wanted to take a walk. Thanks to Sweetflexx Leggings, I didn’t have to choose!

Sweetflexx Leggings look like regular leggings, but they have a secret: resistance bands built into the legs to provide resistance with every step. You don’t feel it, but it adds up: The John B Pierce Sports Lab at Yale University found that by wearing Sweetflexx, you burn more calories and improve body composition. It’s like using resistance bands at the gym all day!

Sweetflexx leggings are attractive and comfortable when standing, walking and sitting while they provide a resistance workout

Sweetflexx looks and feel like regular leggings but holds a secret…they have hidden resistance bands for gentle resistance training on your legs as you move in them during the day.

Anywhere you might wear leggings is fine for Sweetflexx, and it turns a regular day into a workout day

SWEETFLEXX DESIGN AESTHETIC

Once you have them on, they look like regular leggings with a bit of a ruched design element. I like how they go with my casual clothes for museums, library days, shopping, sightseeing and attending classes.

The ruched look of these leggings appears like a design element but it is actually a high-resistance band that creates an exercise routine out of everyday activities like running errands, sightseeing, shopping, or walking around campus

I like how they look with my casual clothes and they are comfortable

Wear them anywhere you would wear regular leggings, but Sweetflexx offers a workout while you sit, walk, stand, bend and go about your regular activities.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND SWEETFLEXX LEGGINGS

Yale University’s renowned The John B Pierce Sports Lab of Physiology and Health studied how the integrated resistance band technology in Sweetflexx leggings impacted the calories burned and muscle training that occurs when wearing the leggings both in regular activities (such as walking, sitting, doing chores, grocery shopping, caring for small children) and during periods of gym exercise. For both intended and incidental exercise of muscles, the Sweetflexx technology enabled muscles to work more effectively, leading to better body composition, meaning more muscle to best optimize performance and health. It also resulted in burning more calories and improving tone. Calorie loss for a 121-pound woman was documented at an extra 255 calories a day just by wearing the leggings.

A portion of the study stated “If an individual wears these leggings over a period of several days, and does not change exercise or diet habits, he or she will be in negative energy balance, and is likely to lose weight.”

The seamlessly integrated resistance bands provide a small force for each step or movement. The resistance level is small, but over the course of the day, it adds up.

SWEETFLEXX: Resistance leggings backed by Yale University caliber research

PUTTING SWEETFLEXX TO THE TEST: MY OWN EXPERIENCE

You are probably wondering, can leggings really create a workout out of regular, everyday activities? And if they do offer resistance, will they be too difficult to walk in? While I have used resistance bands, I just couldn’t envision how Sweetflexx could work and still be comfortable until I tried it. I was surprised to see how much of a difference it made.

Sweetflexx leggings come wrapped in a bow!

They were not uncomfortable to wear, I could stand, sit, bend, and do regular activities wearing them without any difficulty. They truly feel like regular, comfortable leggings! Unlike some leggings, they are not too sheer, even when worn outside or in bright light.

The Ruched pattern on the Sweetflexx leggings holds built-in resistance bands

Closeup of the leggings: ruched design outside resistance bands inside

The next day, I was sore like after leg day at the gym. Have you ever heard how rollerblading engages muscles you don’t use in any other sport or activity? It was the same with Sweetflexx, lots of small muscle groups I must miss at the gym between cardio and weights, but I could feel them after wearing Sweetflexx, as if I exercised just by casually walking around at a leisurely pace.

It was not cumbersome to walk or sit or move around in the Sweetflexx leggings, my range of motion was not at all impaired by them.

I was surprised how the Sweetflexx leggings turn everyday activities like walking up a small staircase into a leg toning workout!

SWEETFLEXX FIT

Sweetflexx appears small coming out the package, putting them on is a bit more effort than slipping on standard leggings, more like getting into a Spanx on steroids type of support garments than effortless sweats. But the first time, it took a minute to figure out how to put them on, more like how one properly gathers the leg when putting on a pair of Wolford hose rather than how one might haphazardly throw on a pair of sweats. After the first time, they seemed to conform to me a bit and it wasn’t a struggle to put them on after that.

If you are between sizes, I recommend ordering one size up. Once they were on, they felt really comfortable.

WEARING SWEETFLEXX WALKING AROUND THE CITY AND YALE CAMPUS

Yale University is a campus within a city, which means lots and lots of walking. So I wore the Sweetflexx leggings around campus to test them out for myself. The resistance is not so strong so as to cause difficulty walking or impair range of motion. I could take my normal strides while walking with ease, and walking at a fast clip, carrying a heavy bag, lifting, or climbing stairs all felt normal while I did them.

Wearing Sweetflexx leggings today while taking a popular Yale student shortcut between the buildings behind Woolsey Hall

By wearing Sweetflexx, I improve tone and burn calories even during otherwise low-impact activities

Walking around Yale’s expansive campus

Wear them while sightseeing or at a museum, walking to work, to the library or class or anywhere else that you might normally wear leggings

Wear Sweetflexx for a daily walk or running errands. Even gentle, leisurely walking such as an outside stroll or browsing boutiques or museums burns calories and improves muscle tone

Wear them while traveling, commuting or while going to classes

Watching the sunset in the city after a day of walking in Sweetflexx leggings.

A day walking in the Sweetflexx and I still feel good!

CONCLUSION

Sweetflexx Leggings address a common problem many busy women have: we can’t always get to the gym as often as we may like. And when we do get to exercise, we may not know how to optimize our program. While we don’t recommend NOT exercising, there are times that you just can’t fit regular exercise into your daily routine: you are busy with caring for a young family, you sustained a sports injury or you’re sick, you’re busy with work or final exams, on vacation, snowed in or whatever other reasons, sometimes getting to the gym regularly is just impossible. But most of us spend time on our feet each day during our regular activities, so why not turn those days into a resistance workout?

Clinically proven to burn calories and improve muscle tone, Sweetflexx leggings are comfortable, look and feel like regular leggings, and turn a regular day of activity into a leg workout day!

A GIFT FOR FASHIONISTAS & FOODIES: David’s Cookies Navy Handbag Ceramic Decorative Jars Set

November 16, 2017 · 3 Comments

Looking for a gift for your favorite fashionista or foodie? Or how about both? Two things that appeal to our inner Marie Antoinette are decadent sweet treats and fashionable accessories. Combine these two loves together into a can’t miss gift: a versatile decorative designer-inspired decorative ceramic treat jar set from David’s Cookies, shaped like – you guessed it – designer handbags!

The David’s Cookies Navy Handbag Ceramic Decorative Jar Set

ABOUT THIS SET

The set comes with a full-size jar shaped like a handbag and matching treat size jar, shaped like a small bag. This Designer-inspired decorative treat jar set, of course, works as the quintessential cookie jar, or it can be used to hold your favorite sweet treats in the kitchen or office or for makeup storage on a dresser, vanity or desk. What fashionista wouldn’t love to get this as a gift?

Two-piece decorative jar set is inspired by designer handbag styles

CONSTRUCTION

The jar set is well made, the ceramic is fully glazed and hand-painted. There are no rough edges, cracks or crazes, or areas that missed glazing or paint as can be seen on some decorative ceramics.

This set is also notable for the attention to detail, as seen especially within the design and gold embellishments, the raised faux grommets, the detailing on the straps and other designer handbag highlights.

NOTE: Wash the ceramics carefully by hand, as decorative glazed ceramics are not recommended for dishwashers or microwaves.

Hand wash the fully glazed ceramic

SIZING DETAILS

This boxed set comes with two handbag styled ceramic decorative jars with lids:

FULL SIZE LARGER JAR

  • a full-size jar which measures approximately 9 1/4″ long by 6 1/4″ wide and it is 8″ high.

The full size jar to hold cookies, fun size candy bars, energy bars, etc

THE SMALLER TREAT SIZED JAR

  • a smaller treat-size jar which measures approximately 3 3/4″ long by 3 1/4″ wide by 4″ high.

PACKAGING

The outer box is thick and sturdy and bears the “David’s Cookies” logo. The gift set is very well packaged inside with multiple layers styrofoam fittings and individual plastic overwraps for keeping each piece separately contained to ensure safety in transit or if kept packed in storage. The set is highly suitable for gift giving. I like when a company takes this much effort to ensure an item is well packed when giving a gift because I know it will stay safe in transit if I mail it to someone.

David’s Cookies logo box packaging is sturdy with lots of internal packing materials to keep the set safe

USES

Decorative as well as functional display pieces, they also serve to organize a vanity or dresser. The full-size jar can hold food-based treats like cookies or wrapped candies, or be used on a vanity table to hold hair accessories or even makeup. The treat size jar is perfect for small hard candies or loose bobby pins, safety pins, cotton balls or swabs or even jewelry. It is also a good spot for a nail polish collection.

Use the large jar for cookies

Hold candy. The large jar currently contains 27 fun size KitKats, Heath Bars and Reeses Peanut Cups, with some room to spare

The set could be displayed in a dressing room, powder room, bedroom, or even as decor in a “lady boss” office. I like the idea of using these as a treat jar in an office setting because while they are large enough to be generous, they don’t store enough cookies or treats to mindlessly polish off excessive amounts of sweets while working on a project. On a desk, the large jar is useful to discretely store energy bars so you don’t over-indulge on vending machine junk food.

Keep power or energy bars at your desk if you can’t get away from work and need a quick energy boost

In the little treat jar, keep cough drops at the ready near a home or office phone or bedside table

MY EXPERIENCE

Perfectly in place on my vanity table amongst my girlie-girl trinkets, in the large jar, I keep my hair accessories such as clips, sticks, ribbons and hair jewelry for hair-on-the-go days for quick access so I don’t have to go rummaging for a quick-hairdo accessory when I am in a rush.

The large jar holds my go-t0 hair accessories for quick hairstyles all in one place: ponytail scarves, hair clips, hair jewelry, ribbons, hair sticks, etc.

In the smaller jar, I hold candy, band-aids, cotton balls or safety pins but it could also hold bobby pins. The lid top fits squarely and the product does not display excess wear from use.

Bandaids in smaller jar

And my favorite treat jar use, to hold chocolate truffles!

The tiny treat jar holding tiny treats!

Yum!!

CONCLUSION

The David’s Cookies Navy Handbag Ceramic Decorative Jars Set is a delightful gift for fashionistas with countless uses for both display and storage purposes, keep dressers and vanities organized with attractive and versatile pieces that are sure to draw compliments and a smile!

Entertaining Challenges: How Selectivor Helps Feed Friends with Food Allergies

November 15, 2017 · 5 Comments

We grew up in a family of foodies. Cooking for friends and family is our big form of entertainment. Not long ago I had some friends over for dinner, and unbeknownst to me, I managed to trigger the food allergies of several guests. Between dairy, gluten, egg, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish and crustacean shellfish it’s all too easy to cause at least one guest to have to pass on one or more dishes you serve. Finding recipes that everyone can enjoy at your dinner parties is no small feat. That is why I was excited to find Selectivor, a new way to organize food preferences and find a meal that everyone can eat without stressing out the host or the guests.

Can you spot all the food allergens in this picture?

THE PROBLEM WITH FEEDING EVERYONE WHILE ENTERTAINING

Food allergies are increasingly common, and many people are saddled with dietary restrictions. Planning a meal around multiple types of food allergies, health problems, and picky eaters can be stressful for a host. I’ve been tempted to make multiple main courses and sides and serve them buffet style to accommodate everyone, but that can be labor intensive, and if possible, if it nice to sit around a table family style and share the same meal and spend time with my guests instead of juggling lots of different meals for different guests. And if you’re attempting wine pairings for each course, you don’t want to leave some people out by only having a substitute course for them. Ideally, if one meal could be prepared, it would allow you more time to spend with guests and be a less stressful and more enjoyable evening for everyone.

WHAT IS SELECTIVOR?

Selectivor is a web-based app that’s also available for iOS and Android, all for free.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Selectivor allows you to organize food preferences such as food allergies, health, cultural or religiously-based food restrictions, clean food choices, low carb diets, or just foods a guest does not like. Then it finds what foods are commonly acceptable to the group so that everyone can eat without stressing out the host or the guests.
  2. Selectivor asks everyone just three things: food allergies, diets you’re on and foods you dislike. You and your friends input your dietary restrictions, and it shows you what foods are okay for everyone. It’s social media for meal planning!

Download Selectivor to an iOS Apple or Android device, it’s easy and free!

Instead of the host having to ask awkward questions of if guests are allergic to anything, or risk having a guest feel left out, the common options are all spelled out for you. You plan your menu around the options provided and stop wasting time worrying about the meal choices or if you might inadvertently serve something that someone will cause a bad food reaction.

Selectivor suggests foods that accommodate everyone’s food allergies and preferences to make your food prep much easier.

Instead of a haphazard collection of food items, Selectivor organizes your custom diet profile of 600 foods into foods that are okay and are not okay to eat. The Selectivor database is fairly extensive and has over eighty physician-curated diet templates which are advised by physicians from top US medical schools like Stanford, Duke, UCSF, UCLA, and University of Minnesota.

  • Do you basically have a menu plan in mind but want to check to see if individual foods are okay for everyone? Use the Selectivor Quicksearch feature.
  • Need inspiration and suggestions? Look through the food lists that are okay or not.

PLAN MEALS FOR HEALTH, MEDICAL, RELIGIOUS AND POPULAR DIETS

In addition to food allergy diets, other diets in the Selectivor database include:

  • Health/Medical Diets: FODMAP (IBS), Low Glycemic Index, Low Glycemic Load, Diabetic, Healthy Skin, ADD/ADHD, DASH (high blood pressure), MIND, Fertility, Kidney Disease, Cancer, Inflammation, Arthritis, Autoimmune, Allergies, Reflux (Heartburn), Liver Disease, Gout, Headache, Low Mercury, Warfarin (Coumadin), Interstitial Cystitis, Kidney Stone, Gallstone, Low Residue/Fiber, Colitis, Osteoporosis, Celiac (Gluten-free), Pregnancy, Lectin Avoidance, and Cholesterol amongst many others
  • Religious/Cultural Diets: Seventh-day Adventist, Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Kosher, Halal, Mediterranean
  • Popular Diets: Ketogenic, Low Carb, Low Fat plus dozens more!

And, as a beauty blog, the Style Chicks would be remiss if we did not mention our excitement to find that Selectivor has menu choices for the Healthy Skin diet, which not only has dietary answers to skin conditions like Eczema, dandruff, and acne but also has food plans for just having better skin.

OUR EXPERIENCE PLANNING OUR MEAL WITH SELECTIVOR: ADDING FOOD RESTRICTIONS AND PREFERENCES

StyleChicks recently celebrated a Social Media follower milestone, and the team wanted to celebrate! So it was a great time to put Selectivor to the test. All our invited guests created a Selectivor profile.

In based on our aggregate guest profiles, we had the following allergies and preferences to work around:

Allergies

Amongst our guests we had the following food allergies:

  • Gluten
  • Peanuts, but other nuts are okay in moderation
  • Shellfish
  • Dairy

Preferences

One guest chooses to avoid red meat whenever possible, another actively dislikes fish.

In addition to a few foods that some guests don’t like that we wished to exclude, we also wanted to incorporate some organic produce, namely recipes that could use the fresh carrots or the other veggies we got this week at our local organic community farm. Using the Selectivor QuickSearch feature, we see that carrots check out okay for everyone, so we needed to find a tasty way to prepare them.

Some of our farm-fresh organic veggies ready to prep and serve

MENU PLANNING TIME

Now the fun begins. On my own, I would find it a bit overwhelming to find a recipe when we are basically left with only fowl or pasta entrees when fish, shellfish, and red meat are eliminated. But Selectivor delineates what is and is not an option to serve to display “Allowed foods“, “Maybe allowed foods“, and “Not Allowed Foods“.

A screenshot of Selectivor’s easy to use interface shows us what we can and can’t serve our guests

With a gluten-free guest, there are gluten-free pasta options like veggie noodles, but we decided to stick with fowl, and in light of it being the end of the fall season, I chose Chicken over Turkey for this particular gathering.

Selectivor makes suggestions of what everyone can eat. Zoodles (Zucchini Noodles) makes a great pasta substitute for low-carb and gluten-free guests.

I took inspiration from the Selectivor food lists of foods that are approved for everyone before proceeding to specific recipes. It felt like browsing Pinterest when I am looking for decorating ideas, but it sparked my creativity for food ideas instead!  Here are my results:

THE MEAL: APPETIZERS

By using Selectivor, we found enough amuse-bouche appetizer selections that everyone could enjoy something along with a glass of a special wine before the meal started.

We casually had wine and appetizers before sitting down to dinner. The appetizers were set out informally on my farm-style kitchen table and guests grazed and drank and we chatted while I finished the final touches on the meal. It was a good way to spend time with my guests as we all ate and drank together.

Wine before dinner with several appetizers. The Selectivor inspired appetizers were a hit!

This cheese uses coconut milk and cashews instead of dairy and the nutty taste paired well with the wine and gluten-free crackers. There are several non-dairy kinds of cheese readily available for purchase that are also nut free.

Selectivor indicated that there were many fruits that everyone could eat, so we also served lots of fruit during the pre-dinner festivities. To complement the red wine, we selected grapes, apricots, plums, figs and bing cherries. This gave the appetizer food presentation some color and variety while also being edible by everyone.

I like that with Selectivor, you can find as many appetizers as you need if you choose to serve only foods everyone that can eat. Appetizers for food-restricted guests is difficult for me, so this is a real find.

GLUTEN-FREE WORKAROUNDS

Store-purchased Gluten Free baguettes are readily available fresh or frozen for my bruschetta and other bread-based appetizers. To compensate for any potential taste and texture gaps that gluten-eaters may sense from the lack of gluten, I used a particularly high-quality balsamic vinegar for the tomato and basil mix bruschetta topping to make the flavors stand out. Your gluten-enabled friends won’t notice a difference in taste or texture to the gluten-free bread as bruschetta is toasted with a bit of brushed olive oil that can be infused. The “Condiments, Sauces and Soups” section of the Selectivor Food List is very helpful to find ideas like this to enhance the meal for everyone’s enjoyment.

Gluten-free baguettes are readily available for bruschetta and crostini appetizers that everyone can enjoy

PEANUT ALLERGY WORKAROUNDS

One of the cheeses was nut-based, but come to find out, not everyone with Peanut allergies is allergic to other nuts, tree nuts might be on the “Maybe Foods List”. We had Rosemary and Garlic Infused Oven Roasted Almonds, (a tree nut) which was edible even by our guest with peanut allergies.

MY OVERALL IMPRESSION OF SELECTIVOR FOR FINDING APPETIZERS

I was pleased to have so many ideas and suggestions for inspiration from Selectivor so we could serve a full and tasty menu.  Using Selectivor saved time so that instead of endless researching and stressing to find recipes to please everyone, I could focus on getting flowers for the table, find a few nice wine pairings for each course, pairing fruits to enhance the wine, selecting serving pieces and shopping for foods we could all eat and enjoy. I got to try a few new things too!

Are you worried your guests who eat everything will feel underwhelmed by your meal? Don’t. If you’re making many appetizers to enjoy with a pre-dinner glass of wine, you may still choose to have a crowd favorite that not everyone can have, like one seafood dish, as long as the seafood is clearly labeled as such to alert allergic guests to choose from the other selections.  We typically serve plenty of seafood, but we found ample appetizers choices without it so this time we left it out.

THE ENTREE

Our guest-friendly meal: Curry Chicken, Brown Jasmine Rice, Glazed Carrot Coins, Gluten-Free Artisan Herbed Bread, and to drink there was a pitcher of home-brewed Green Tea Lemonade and bottles of Chardonnay, depending on the guests’ preference.

The Curry Chicken recipe is super easy to make, tender, moist and flavorful.

Our guest-friendly meal: Curry Chicken, Brown Jasmine Rice, Creamed Glazed Carrot Coins, Gluten-Free Artisan Herbed Bread, and chilled homemade Green Tea Lemonade

I learned from Selectivor that many types of rice, including this Brown Jasmine Rice, is gluten-free so we could serve it to all our guests.

Curry Chicken is easy to make for crowd in advance while still being visually appealing and tasty

Food restrictions don’t have to mean bland tasting food. We got to use our organic farm carrots to make these Glazed Carrot Coins, a farm to table restaurant quality side style recipe made with orange juice, cinnamon, and fresh ginger that adds an unexpected lightly sweet but spicy, tangy taste!

Glazed Carrot Coins using our farm-fresh organic carrots. Carrots are gluten-free.

THE DESSERT

We served sliced fruit and Gluten-free Carrot Cake Cupcakes (made with the organic farm carrots) with an optional cream cheese drizzle frosting served on the side for those who could have it. It was rich and sweet enough that it didn’t really need the frosting though.

Another Gluten-free option that would have worked for everyone was an Avocado Chocolate Mousse that sounded delicious, but we opted for the carrot cakes’ seasonal notes of the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and vanilla and will save the Mousse for our next gathering at the beginning of winter.

ABOUT THE RECIPE: This Gluten-free Carrot Cake recipe met the needs of our dairy-free and our gluten-free guests, and also incorporated our preference to use our organic farm fresh carrots. Here is a picture of the dessert prep stage.

TIP: while preparing the rest of the recipe, soak the shredded organic carrots and raisins in a bit of water with the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg to impart extra flavor and make the cupcake inclusions extra moist.

And here is the finished plated dessert:

Gluten-Free Carrot Cake Cupcakes and sliced Kiwi for dessert

OUR EXPERIENCE: MY RESULTS

My guests and I all found Selectivor to be easy to use and fun. It was so much easier for me to plan a menu and it introduced me to ideas that never occurred to me. There are foods I would have thought were not to be given to those with gluten allergies, but it turns out they are actually gluten-free foods that everyone can enjoy.

FOR GUESTS

Guests with restricted diets do not have to worry that they are an imposition or being rude to make their food restrictions known, they can do so politely and discretely, and they don’t have to worry that they may inadvertently eat something they cannot or should not.

One guest, Gemma, found the idea of using Selectivor to be such a relief because she has so many food allergies that she is often reluctant to eat at restaurants or go over someone’s house for dinner because she feels like an imposition and she hates making someone feel bad by refusing a food she is allergic too, especially with misunderstood allergies like gluten. A few times well-meaning friends and family have served Gemma something they thought was gluten-free but it wasn’t. She also has been burned a few times by the “secret ingredient” in a family recipe being nuts or shellfish and has eaten something and not known until it was too late! But Selectivor is a great tool for highly food restricted guests or those who choose to adhere to certain dietary choices.

Do you have serious food allergies or restrictions like Gemma? Then don’t miss out or suffer in silence! Selectivor profiles can be shared with anyone you dine with.

Selectivor is accurate (no well-meaning mistakes about what is and is not gluten-free for example) it’s convenient and you do not need to worry about the social awkwardness of declining food items. Invite friends, family or anyone else to your profile on Facebook.

FOR HOSTS

As a host, I found it so much easier to use a tool like Selectivor instead of manually researching through my recipes trying to find something everyone could have and like. It gave me ideas I would not have thought of and saved a great deal of time worrying about finding common foods for everyone. This gave me time to focus on what we could do instead of what we couldn’t, so I could prepare enough in advance to be able to spend the most time with my guests.

Selectivor allows you to create and manage profiles for loved ones who can’t or won’t create a profile, such as children or elderly relatives. This way, as a host, you are alerted to food restrictions you might otherwise forget, such as low salt or peanut allergies.

TIP: Do you have a secret ingredient in a family recipe you don’t wish to divulge but don’t want to accidentally trigger a food allergy? As long as you strictly adhere to Selectivor’s common food list when serving your guests, it’s okay to keep your family secret recipe a secret.

I also got to try food I would not have even thought of! For example, dairy-free doesn’t necessarily mean no cheese whatsoever, but perhaps ask dairy-free guests about trying a coconut milk cheese instead.

CONCLUSION

An easy and fun way to plan a meal for friends with various allergies, health conditions, and picky eaters with food preferences, sign up for Selectivor at Selectivor.com or download the app and begin the fun process of putting together a meal everyone can enjoy! We had a blast planning our meal this weekend!
