The Essentials of Essential Oils Part 1: Organic Carrier Oil Gift Set for Hair, Face & Body

February 28, 2016 · Leave a Comment

Today we’re starting a series on Essential Oils and Carrier Oils, and how to use them to make your beauty routine more effective and enjoyable. First up, we’ll be reviewing a lovely Carrier Oil Mixing Set we received.

The Gio Naturals Organic Carrier Oil Gift Set for Hair, Face & Body contains four bottles of carrier oils and one empty bottle to mix your own concoction, and is great for both as a gift and as a starter kit into DIY beauty oils The four carrier oils are Jojoba, Argan, Castor and Tamanu, which makes for a very versatile set. Here is an overview of each oil, its’ uses, and the quality and presentation of these particular oils.

Jojoba Oil is one of my favorites. I use this to both help other oils penetrate into hair and because it fills the hair shaft in porous hair. Helps repair heat damage, great for scalp problems like dandruff. Very soothing. If I have a free day, I apply Jojoba earlier in the day and let that sit for a bit, then apply other oils or conditioners atop the Jojoba. A small amount of Jojoba can be used on the ends of hair for styling and protecting, it is not greasy. Similar benefits to olive oil for scalp but it is much easier to wash Jojoba out of the hair. If you are a “No ‘poo” shampooer, you will definitely like Jojoba over olive oil for scalp conditioning. Adds shine. Unscented and absorbs easily. I found the quality of this particular brand to be unscented, thick, and rich and a nice rich golden color.

Jojoba is also very nice as a facial moisturizer, especially if you oily skin, as it is very close to sebum, so it helps the skin regulate itself.

Argan Oil is for the repair of damaged follicles and for hair loss. Argan is the popular buzz word in many products these days, but for hair, the real value is to apply it to the scalp. Personally I don’t find much value to Argan in the length of my hair, but many prefer it to other conditioning oils. I do find it beneficial for nail beds to retain moisture on my nails that split and crack easily. It is also good on cracked, dry skin on feet, and for stretch marks. This particular bottle has a warm, nutty scent, but it is light enough to not be noticed, especially when combined with other oils.

Castor Oil thickens thinning hair and acts as a humectant for frizzy hair. Also useful for eyelash growth/conditioning. Apply to a cotton swab and blink your eyelashes over the tip to avoid getting it in your eyes. Also good for conditioning eyebrows. This bottle was thick, golden and no scent.

Tamanu Oil was unfamiliar to me, in doing some research it is used for skin conditions such as cold sores, psoriasis, eczema, acne scars, general scars, burns, stings, stretch marks, mosquito bites, toenail fungus, dry scalp and flaky, scaly or overly dry skin. Tamanu oil is also topical healing agent with antineuralgic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties. Unlike Jojoba, there is a definite scent to Tamanu, sort of a mesquite smell. It is not terrible, but it would conflict with a floral scent perfume. It is however, less of a scent than some topical ointments. There is a greenish tint to the golden color; a very tiny bit goes a long way.
The fifth bottle in this set is the white Blender bottle to mix your own combinations. A good example might be 3 parts Argan Oil with 1 part Castor Oil for applying to the scalp to reduce dandruff and encourage hair growth, and add a couple drops of Jojoba to help the mix penetrate into the scalp and to condition the scalp skin.

The oils also mix nicely with sugar scrubs and to ramp up your basic facial moisturizers.

Product Review: Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask By Valentia

February 24, 2016 · Leave a Comment

This has been a particularly rough winter on my skin. While December and parts of January were so mild, when the weather turned really cold my skin became so raw and dry and I have had trouble getting it back to normal.

I was sent Valentia’s Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask for review and I really like it. The scent is lovely: light and fresh, with a hint of refreshing citrus green tea. The texture is fantastic, not sticky at all and in fact has a silky feel to it, perhaps due to the Silk Protein Amino Acids. It contains one of my favorite ingredients, Botanical Hyaluronic Acid, which soothes and plumps skin. It also contains green tea, Aloe Vera, and Organic Rosehip Seed Oil for soothing and nourishing the skin. It washes off cleanly and leaves skin ready for a good occlusive moisturizer to seal in all of the soothing and plumping ingredients the skin just soaked in.

The results were impressive. My raw skin was soothed and looked plump and radiant. When I smiled I had that youthful glow on my cheeks that everyone past the age of 23 is looking for, likely due to the high quality hyaluronic acid. It smoothed out the redness and dryness of some post-acne spots enough for me to cover them easily.

I also tried it on my hands, and that is the part that really blew me away: after going out without gloves on a particularly cold day, my hands still stayed moisturized and hydrated for a good 36 hours after using the mask on them for only about 15 minutes. I have started using facial masks regularly on my hands as well, as I try to take time as a relaxing 15-30 break, but something always pops into my head and I’m reaching for my iPad to write it down or check on something. If I put a mask on my hands as well, then not only am I forced to sit and relax, but my always dry hands look (and feel) better!

The mask reminds me of the type one gets as the hydration part of high-end spa facials, but instead of heading out for a pricey treatment you can relax and optimize your skin at home! This mask has become a relaxing part of my Sunday Night Beauty regime as a way to relax before the hectic week starts.

Elba Naturals n.1 Face and Eye Advanced Firming Creme

February 6, 2016 · Leave a Comment

Elba Naturals n.1 Face & Eye Advanced Firming Creme is packed with natural, quality ingredients. Notable to Elba Naturals n.1 Face & Eye Advanced Firming Creme is a nice pairing of many moisturizing and soothing natural ingredients combined with several powerful anti-aging ingredients. I think the number of quality soothing moisturizers allows the powerful treatment ingredients to do a good job on areas of aging without drying out the appearance of the skin, which is a difficult balance to achieve.

It contains several beauty treatment power houses like  Glycolic Acid (a powerful peel perfect for aging skin that gently restores that youthful pink glow and can be done regularly), Vitamin C (wonderful for hyper pigmentation), and Peptides. And as you know if you read Style Chicks on any kind of regular basis, I am a huge fan of Hyaluronic Acid, and in this cream it does an amazing job at holding moisture and making skin plump and youthful. These are all great ingredients for aging skin or skin that is lackluster.

USE ON MY FACE AND THROAT

Known go-to moisturizing agents like Aloe, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Jojoba, and soothing agents like Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile), and natural remedies like Wildcrafter Arnica Montana (natural remedy commonly used for bruising and swelling). I noticed that the puffiness under my eyes went down after using it for just a couple of days. I love when a product gives fast results!

It feels very moisturizing without feeling greasy. This is a nice perk for day time use to be able to apply it under makeup and have the benefit of glycolic acid to make skin have a natural youthful luster, and hyaluronic acid to plump and seem dewy. Nice to apply to problem areas like eyes, the “eleven” lines between my eyebrows, and the lines between my nose and mouth. My lips are also chronically flaking and dry so patting a small amount of my lips makes them dewy and moist under my lip stain or lipstick. The combination of soothing ingredients and glycolic acid means that your eyes and lips won’t get irritated when they work to sack your little wrinkles.

Another thing that I find exciting about Elba Naturals n.1 Face & Eye Advanced Firming Creme is that it took down a couple of painful blemishes overnight, enough that I could successfully cover them. I had two proximate pimples and a whitehead that seemed to merge into one perfect storm of a pimple yesterday. After using the cream overnight, the whitehead was hard to find in a normal strength mirror, the two pimples were distinct, one was nearly flat and the other was reduced by 75%. Pretty impressive. This is probably due to the glycolic acid paired with the hyaluronic acid: the first took the blemish down, the second kept the pores open so the glycolic could keep penetrating.

USE ON MY HANDS

This product said it was also good for hands, which I was very excited to try.

I have ALWAYS worn sunscreen on my face and neck since I was a teen, so my face does not really belie my age, but my hands do: I never bothered to wear any protective sunscreen on my hands and it shows. Many of the products designed for anti-aging hands are more expensive than eye creams.

While most products such as trusty coconut oil can give my hands a temporary younger and smoother look, it does not last for more than a few hours. The combo of moisturizing ingredients with treatment ingredients make for a good combo for hands that look younger all day and address wrinkly knuckles, dark areas, and really dry cuticles. I mostly just applied it to cuticles, knuckles, finger webs, and areas of obvious aging or dry skin. It really makes a difference: my cuticles cleaned up quickly and evenly – and I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to at-home cuticle clean up.

In fact, on Monday I was attempting to get some picture of an amazing vintage ruby ring of mine for Style Chick’s Instagram, but decided to scut the pictures because my hand looked so dry and wrinkly (happens every winter, even with regular glove usage.) The ring looked amazing – the hand did not. But after a night with Elba Naturals n.1 Face & Eye Advanced Firming Creme on my hands, I’m ruby ring close up ready!

I will definitely continue to use Elba Naturals n.1 Face & Eye Advanced Firming Creme!

Why We Love Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Sunscreen

June 21, 2015 · Leave a Comment

This article is a product review for NARS COSMETICS PURE RADIANT TINTED MOISTURIZER BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN SPF 30 (not the matte version).

Awhile back I went to my local Nars counter to restock on a few items and met a lovely makeup artist there. One of the products she introduced me to was Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 in Terre Neuve.

Nars has since come out with a Matte version, so I thought it would be good to review the Radiant Version. I haven’t tried the Matte version but there are reasons I think I would stick with the Radiant.

The Nars MUA informed me it was a tinted moisturizer, but it is so much more than that.

As the name implies, it has a Broad Spectrum SPF of 30, so it is really more of a SPF-moisturizer-skincare product that happens to even the skintone and leave skin dewy.

Key Ingredients

The skincare ingredients are also impressive: Botanicals and seawater work to reduce hyperpigmentation and hydrate skin, and it really does work as a surge of moisture to the skin.

The Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Experience

I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now and I’ve never seen my skin get dry when I’m wearing it.

My favorite use for Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer is around the eyes. Most products that are targeted as an SPF for the orbital area tend to irritate the eye area and eventually end up in my eyes, leading to irritation. Not only does this product stay in place and not irritate the delicate eyelid skin, it provides fantastic light coverage for circles, keeps the area moist and non-creased, and is a great eyeshadow primer. It really provides a radiance to the eye area, so if you are interested in an easy no-makeup look, this is a great product for around the eye.

When I want more coverage or brightness I layer Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Chantilly over it.

The Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Shade Range

The color range for this product is great as well.

Terre Neuve is the lightest shade with a neutral pink undertone. Very few tinted moisturizers go anywhere near the pink undertone range, which is why to date I have always ended up simply mixing in a matching foundation with my moisturizer, which never gives great results.

I appreciate Nars giving a nod to us pale women with this product and the subtle undertone variations. Subtle enough, in fact, that Lyn was matched to Finland, which has both pink and yellow undertones in the lightest shade. She and I always end up getting matched to the same shade (we are siblings and all), but this product addresses the slightest of undertone differences.

If I Could Fix One Thing

The only downside to the product is that the amount that one needs to use for proper SPF coverage results in a cakey, unrealistic foundation look if your skin is in the least bit dry which is why I plan on sticking with the Radiant version vs the Matte version for now.

This doesn’t really bother me since I layer it on top of a regular sunscreen, and around the eyes it is better than not wearing sunscreen. But adding another layer of sun protection is always a bonus.

Conclusion

All in all this is a fantastic product: it is a moisturizer that packs a punch, gives even tone to the skin, gives a nice layer of SPF, doesn’t irritate, and leaves a dewy, youthful finish. I’m very pleased I found it.
