Why Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour Is Special

March 30, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Philip Kingsley Shampoo and Conditioner has absolutely no scent
Philip Kingsley Conditioner has absolutely no scent

This is a product review and ingredient guide for Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour Shampoo and Conditioner.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is a well-known stellar hair rescue product with a cocktail of go-to ingredients to quickly revitalize lackluster hair. It’s star ingredient, Elastin, gives hair a springy bounce.

Elastin is also used in the lesser known Philip Kingsley range: No Scent No Colour Shampoo and Conditioner. This gentle, vegan formula is made for sensitive scalps.

No matter what your hair has experienced (coloring, chemicals, hot tools), it likely has lost some Elastin along the way. Few products for sensitive types deliver the hair restoration ingredients found in this duo.

Why Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour Shampoo and Conditioner is Special

Kingsley designed the duo Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour Shampoo and Conditioner for his own wife while she endured the devastating effects of chemo.

Both products are not just unscented, they really smell of nothing.

Suitable for all hair types, it works best for fine or brittle hair, sensitive scalps, or for those with frequent allergic reactions to product.

It is also an excellent product for those who tolerate scented haircare but prefer not to have scent competing with their signature fragrance or work in a scent free office.

Features

  • Cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Recyclable packaging
  • No harsh or nasty ingredients in this one.

Why We Love Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour

  • Fragrance, paraben and colour-free.
  • No strong surfactants
  • Vegan friendly
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Safe for Brazilian Keratin treated hair
  • It is safe for sensitive scalps and colored hair.

Notably, it contains elastin to give hair a springy bounce, strength and shine.

Both the shampoo and conditioner are outstanding products using ingredients that are friendly to tender scalps or brittle hair.

I have personally found it more difficult to find scent-free, no color shampoo.

We recommend both shampoo and conditioner. Here is the ingredient line-up for the Shampoo and a key ingredient overview of the conditioner:

No Scent No Colour Shampoo Key Ingredients

Sodium Cocoyl Hydrolyzed Amaranth Protein

A natural foaming peptide derived from organic Amaranth (Amaranthus Caudatus). It is a gluten-free protein grain similar to rice. It is rich in Vitamin E and Linoleic acid (Omega 6). Interestingly, it has a natural foaming action to lend a natural, gentle lather to this shampoo.

This colorful bloom sources the grain that delivers hair nutrients, proteins and a gentle lather to this shampoo

CETEARYL ALCOHOL

One of the ”good alcohols” because it attracts moisture.

GLYCERIN

Glycerin helps hair to retain moisture. This is particularly important for dry, damaged hair or coarse and curly hair.

CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA FLOWER EXTRACT

Better known as Chamomile.

Chamomile is an antioxidant with potent skin-soothing action. 1 It contains Terpenoids, bisabolol and chamazulene. Chamomile Extract is excellent in a formulation with powerful actives because it contains flavones. These flavones inhibit the production of inflammation, even in deeper skin layers2. Meanwhile, the apigenin in Chamomile protects the skin barrier3.

It is also an anti-inflammatory to treat some scalp conditions that impact hair growth.  It is an anti-fungal which reduces dandruff. 4

This formula has the benefits of chamomile without the scent.

Chamomile

SODIUM LAUROYL SARCOSINATE

A gentle cleanser derived from an amino acid. It cleans by attracting oil and dirt. It also conditions and improves the appearance of damaged hair.

ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN

A glycerin base serves as an alternative to parabens. It moisturizes hair and gives a temporary thickening appearance to hair strands.

COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE

A mild detergent often used in baby products, it creates lather. It is a synthetic fatty acid made from coconuts.

No Scent No Colour Conditioner Key Ingredients

HYDROLYZED ELASTIN

The star of the show. Elastin gives hair tensile strength: the ability to stretch. Hydrolyzed Elastin adds body and elasticity to hair. It improves hair’s resistance to breakage and aids moisture retention.

Unlike protein treatments, you cannot over-do elastin. Elastin returns a youthful look to the hair. Elastin is often a missing element in hair maintenance routines, but it is important to keep hair looking vibrant, lush, bouncy and healthy.

Elastin is key to PK’s Elasticizer, but if you find that too hard to wash out of your hair, this conditioner is the next best thing.

AMODIMETHICONE

AminoSilicone is a protein-based detangler. It does not leave residue or build-up, it does reduce hair breakage.

The Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour Experience

Suitable for daily use, the shampoo lather is on the less sudsy side and very gentle. It rinses out clean. The conditioner is lightweight, like a cream rinse, and rinses clean without residue.

It is not so suitable for washing hair after a heavy hair oiling treatment or when in need of a deep clarifying. It is excellent for a daily wash for dry or damaged hair or for very sensitive scalps. Even brittle hair feels stronger after use.

The conditioner works quickly. After a few uses hair feels stronger and has a nice healthy feel and bounce.

Philip Kingsley Conditioner is suitable for use as a co-wash

Luxe Hair Conditioning: Allurials Fragrance-Free Conditioner

May 14, 2017 · Leave a Comment

There are many luxe hair conditioners that make hair soft, shiny and strong but are naturally or artificially fragrant. Unfortunately, there are few unscented conditioners that are also effective, especially for colored hair. If you need fragrance-free hair care, options are limited. We love Allurials Fragrance Free Conditioner, an unscented conditioner containing the quality of natural ingredients found in high-end conditioners including Jojoba, Coconut Oil, Avocado, Argan Oil, Aloe Vera and other natural hair nourishing goodness.

Allurials Fragrance-Free Hair Conditioner

Allurials Fragrance-Free Hair Conditioner contains a rich cocktail of organic, natural superfood ingredients for hair and scalp

WHY THE NEED FOR UNSCENTED HAIR CARE

The scent of your conditioner lingers on hair, even subtly, after use. This is wonderful if you like the scent, but for those with allergies, or a preference for only using their own perfumed scent, or for whatever reason you or a partner needs your hair to remain fragrance-free, hair care options become limited. Many of the luxe hair conditioners that are highly effective have moderate to heavy scent due to added fragrance or they contain ingredients that have a strong natural aroma. And, some men just want quality hair conditioners without a perfumed scent.

UNSCENTED OPTIONS

It becomes difficult to find quality unscented hair care. While there are some no or low scent hair care products lines amongst drug store brands, many find the only real feature of these products is that they are unscented, they generally are not very hydrating. And a lower price point, they rarely have a meaningful quantity of quality moisturizing ingredients. Even at a higher price point, including amongst brands that are known to be allergy friendly, there are limited options within their fragrance-free haircare.

ALLURIALS FRAGRANCE-FREE HAIR CONDITIONER

Allurials is indeed unscented. Not just devoid of added fragrance, but my fussy nose finds no detectable scent. Suitable for men and women, it is hydrating to hair and scalp with some amazing ingredients

INGREDIENTS

Several Superfoods can be seen in the list of organic and natural ingredients in Allurials Fragrance-Free Hair Conditioner, providing benefit to both scalp and the hair.

Full of organic and natural ingredients to feed hair

Full of organic and natural ingredients like Coconut Oil and Aloe Vera to feed the hair and scalp

  • Silk Peptides and Pea Peptides aid the structure of the hair. Pea Peptides minimize UV damage to the scalp. Pea Peptides contain Lysine, important for hair growth promotion at the follicular level and sebum production regulation, which decreases with age. Pea Peptides absorb easily.
  • Argan oil when massaged into the scalp aids in stimulating the hair follicles for stimulated hair growth.
  • Jojoba oil is an emollient, made of 98% monounsaturated fats so it can penetrate the hair follicle. It fills in the cracks and damage to bare spots on the hair shaft, especially on chemically-treated or color-treated hair. Jojoba has a very similar structure to sebum, replacing the natural oils the scalp needs to stay healthy. Jojoba gives elasticity and softness to hair. Jojoba is also a carrier oil, increasing the efficacy of other active ingredients.
  • Avocado oil decreases dryness and improves texture
  • Coconut oil is extremely popular in hair care, and for good reason. It helps hair retain protein and moisture. Protein loss is what makes hair look damaged. Coconut Oil within a conditioner is easier to wash out than straight Coconut Oil application.
  • Flaxseed Oil is high in Omega-3s, Flaxseed is a superfood for hair. It helps reduce hair loss.
  • Kernel Oil is a deep hair conditioner that is also beneficial for the scalp and is packed with nourishing vitamins for hair.
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice feeds hair with essential nutrients, it also makes hair smooth, soft and shiny. Aloe Vera has a type of enzyme that repairs dead skin cells on the scalp. A healthy scalp means optimal hair growth.
  • Linseed Oil is helpful for hair damaged by environmental factors and styling tools. High in Omega 3s, Linseed helps hair when massaged into the roots of the hair.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Contains natural ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil and Avocado

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

This is a very thick, creamy conditioner, almost a concentrated consistency like a thick moisturizer but not as thick as a buttercream.

I was excited to see many of the ingredients contained within this conditioner, as they have been successful on my hair when used in DIY hair mask tutorials, such as Coconut Oil. But when used directly on the hair, many of these ingredients are often difficult to rinse out because they are so emollient and oily. However, within this conditioner, I found them to rinse cleanly.

Allurials Fragrance-Free Hair Conditioner

Allurials Fragrance-Free Hair Conditioner contains rich organic ingredients like Coconut Oil, Aloe and Avocado but it still rinses away clean with no residue

APPLICATION AND USE

It required less Allurials conditioner to coat my hair than I tend to use with some other brands. And it soaked in quickly.

A dollop of Allurials is all that is needed

A dollop of Allurials is all that is needed

TIP: Rub it between wet palms to fully emulsify it, like you would for a good, thick facial moisturizer like Creme de la Mer.

Rub the creamy conditioner between your fingers before applying to hair

Rub the creamy conditioner between your fingers before applying to hair

Then I coated my hair and even my scalp and massaged it into my hair so it could absorb. It made for a good scalp massage. It did not feel as slippery or gooey as conditioners typically feel while in the hair, it felt more like a hair styling cream. It also seemed to sink into my hair instead of staying on the surface.

There really is no scent. Even lots of hypoallergenic brands have a scent, albeit light and non-irritating. I smelled nothing.

Since it was not a slippery coating sitting on the surface of my hair, it was difficult to assess when I considered the conditioner washed out of my hair when rinsing. Because of this, I took a bit longer to rinse out than some conditioners, but it was still much less time to rinse out than when I use any of these natural items directly on my hair, such as washing out Coconut Oil or an Avocado hair mask. It did wash out completely and cleanly however without leaving a residue.

VERDICT:

My hair felt strong and hydrated, even my dry ends felt smoother. My scalp felt good and my hair looked shiny and was soft after use.

Because it is not scented, I can even use Allurials Fragrance-Free Conditioner in my hair overnight and wash it out in the morning without getting signs of fragrance irritation such as puffy eyes or a sniffly nose. It does not stain my pillowcase.  This makes it also useful as a pre-poo hair treatment and it is creamy enough to stay put as a deep conditioning hair mask if it is combed into hair while exercising or watching a movie.

Suitable for both men and women who want a luxe moisturizing conditioner with no fragrance or scent, Allurials Fragrance-Free Conditioner provides superfood benefits to the hair and scalp for healthier hair.

5 Things to Know Now About Clinique Non-Aerosol Hairspray

July 13, 2015 · 1 Comment

UPDATE MAY 2025: Clinique Non-Aerosol Hairspray is NOT discontinued at this time. But according to Clinique, it is unavailable until summer due to production issues. Read more Here.

If Clinique Non-Aerosol Hairspray is discontinued in the future, visit the Discontinued Clinique Products Guide with 16 places to buy discontinued Clinique.

As more public places are anti-fragrance, it is difficult to find a hairspray that is suitable for the office. Clinique Non-Aerosol Hairspray is a scent-free option. Read about our experience.

5 Things to Know About Clinique Non-Aerosol Hairspray

Clinique, long-known for products suitable for those with sensitive skin and eyes, has a hairspray that manages to simultaneously pull off the five following beauty feats:

  1. Unscented. And when I say unscented, I mean not just devoid of a perfume-y top note scent masking the noxious smell of hairspray or alcohol, it is impressively devoid of detectible scent or odor in the bottle or when sprayed on my hair.
  2. Non-Aerosol. Irritating to the eyes and banned from many offices, aerosols are just not an option for some situations.
  3. A fine mist. My primary gripe against most non-aerosol hairsprays is when it sprays, it is in uneven spurts that completely miss some areas and soak others. This is a light, even coverage.
  4. Hold without buildup. A light to medium hold you can still brush through and not get gunky flakes or clumps of hair and stringy pieces. When combed out, hair looks like normal, clean hair, not dull, post-style stringiness.
  5. Hair is touchable after use. Not crunchy. Big bonus.

The Clinique Non-Aerosol Hairspray Experience

Like a covert beauty weapon, Clinique Non-Aerosol is my go-to hairspray for when I am not *SUPPOSED* to be wearing hairspray” like to the office, for outside events like picnics, or other low-key events.

I can’t say this would be my hairspray for a big event or night out, or if I was looking to tease in volume for a high pony tail or updo. For these styles a different spray would likely give longer and stronger hold.

I also did not feel it particularly added any shine (or dullness as some sprays can do), but I suppose that is part of not being very detectible.
