Why ROIL Private Collection Body Lotion by Amanda George is Special

February 24, 2020 · 5 Comments

ROIL Private Collection is a range of luxury hair and body care. ROIL Founder Amanda George is likely best known as a celebrity hair guru. She custom-crafts marvelous combinations of organically farmed oils that impart healthy nutrients and hydration to hair and skin. One such marvel is ROIL Private Collection Body Lotion.

Roil Private Collection Body Lotion: Custom-Crafted Organically Farmed Luxury

why Roil Body Lotion is Special

The entire ROIL Private Collection range has a spa-like feel. But several body lotions deliver an enjoyably luxurious experience while delivering softer skin. What makes this body lotion special?

The Roil Private Collection Body Lotion is a decadent formulation. It contains an organic ingredient combination that collectively rises to the level of treating actives. It contains generous doses of collagen promoting, anti-aging, skin restoring nutrients often found in facial skin topicals. It is like a spa luxury and skin rehab treatment in one. Let’s take a look.

Ingredient Profile

Avocado Oil

Style Chicks Glossary of Skin and Hair Terms. Algae glossary definition on StyleChicks.com

Avocado

Avocado Oil is rich in fatty acids Omega 3 and 6 to strengthen the skin lipid barrier. Vitamins C, D, and E promote wound healing and collagen production [1].

Avocado absorbs into the skin for better hydration potential. Avocado Oil is exceptionally rich yet hydrates like natural skin sebum. It improves skin elasticity, a key element is healthy, younger appearing skin.

Shea Butter

Shea Butter contains rich, restorative and nurturing fatty acids and vitamins.

Shea can feed the skin and overhaul the skin texture, even on deep burns and stretch marks. Within this formulation it does not cause the waxy feel often associated with Shea.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is a moisturizing anti-inflammatory with mild UV protective properties.

Coconut Oil penetrates deeper than other oils. It exfoliates dry flaky skin and reveals smooth skin. It is antibacterial and seals in moisture.

Rice Bran Oil

Rice Bran Oil is a gentle anti-inflammatory oil that promotes hydration. It is a vital source of vitamins A, B2, B1, squalene and two types of Vitamin E. This combo can hydrate, heal and soften skin while making scars and burns more pliable.

It is high in fatty acids including Omega 6 and 9, both of which give skin a healthy glow. It is rich in ferulic acid (used in facial creams to support Vitamin C), plus inositol and gamma oryzanol, anti-oxidants and nourishing moisturizers. [2]

Rice bran oil evens out skin tone and reduces dark spots. [3]

It is excellent for tackling fine lines and wrinkles [4] that often belie age on shoulders, arms, and legs.

Grape Seed Oil

StyleChicks.com reviews ROIL

Grapeseed Oil

Grape Seed Oil is skin-nourishing and contains building blocks for collagen production.

High in Polyphenols, Vitamins C, D, E and Omega 6, it treats dry skin, wrinkles, discoloration, and aging. An excellent remedy for restoring sun-damaged skin.

It also contains a very high antioxidant level to protect the skin against UV damage.

Green Tea

Green Tea is both soothing and an anti-inflammatory.

Green tea contains polyphenols that soothe skin while providing antioxidants. Polyphenols may improve sun-damaged skin. [5]

High in Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), green tea is helpful for skin health and appearance. EGCG is a potent antioxidant. It protects against environmental damage and neutralizes free radicals that prematurely age skin. Research shows EGCG reactivates dying skin cells.  This shows promise for repairing sun damage and scar healing. [6]

Wild Rosehip Oil

Rosehips contain vitamin C

Rosehips

Wild Rosehip Oil is high in Vitamins A, C, and E. They provide nutrients, fade acne scars and promote cell turnover.

Rose Hip Seed Oil is a Vitamin C variant that is both a treatment and a hydrating ingredient. It offers the benefits of Vitamin C and Retinol serums such as lightening dark spots but without causing irritation.

Rosehip oil is collagen enhancing. It contains Vitamins A and C for collagen production. Second, Rosehip oil inhibits MMP-1, an enzyme that breaks down collagen within the body. [7]

Rosehip oil also has omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids to make skin glow, as well as soothe and moisturize eczema or dry skin. [8]

Amla fruit

Indian Gooseberry or Amla fruit

Amla Oil

Amla is a wonder fruit also known as Indian Gooseberry.

Amla is nutrient-rich and restorative. It is a non-greasy oil high in Vitamin C to increase collagen and fade scars. It prevents damage to the skin and soothes redness.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil has a similar structure to sebum, replacing the natural oils the skin needs to stay healthy. It regulates oily skin, removes impurities and flakes, reduces inflammation and soothes skin. Jojoba is soothing to the skin and softens wrinkles. Jojoba oil is an emollient, made of 98% monounsaturated fats.

Jojoba is a carrier oil, increasing the efficacy of other active ingredients.

Aloe

Aloe vera nourishes delicate eye skin

Aloe vera nourishes delicate skin

Aloe is full of vitamins so it is highly nourishing to the skin. It provides nourishment to the skin as it contains Vitamins A, C, Bs, and E as well as minerals and enzymes. This skin food heals, hydrates, and accelerates skin cell growth.

It provides anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It heals scars, soothes razor burn and sun exposure and banishes dry, flaky skin.

rosemary oil

Rosemary Oil is an antioxidant with anti-aging properties. It reduces environmental skin damage and gives skin a healthy glow.

Rosemary combats dry skin. It naturally protects the skin from sun damage and free radicals. It also has natural antiseptic properties and is a gentle exfoliant for dead skin flakes.

Rosemary is soothing and helps reduce puffiness and lightens dark spots. It is stimulating and promotes better blood circulation to deliver the nutrients necessary to build collagen, elastin and to encourage scar repair.

ROIL custom-crafted formulas are organically farmed, paraben-free, and cruelty-free.

The ROIL experience

This rich, thick cream absorbs quickly without leaving any oily residue. Massaging in one or two pumps worth of cream covers a surprising amount of skin.

Skin is nourished, soft and looks younger with a healthy, hydrated glow. Even skin on areas like elbows looks younger, not just softer.

A lovely Valencia orange scent that I personally enjoy as the lightest of fragrance. Once it dries down, one has the lean in to detect the lingering notes of orange and grapefruit. I prefer unscented lotions but this is my exception. Subtle enough for even wearing at the office.

Private Collection Body Lotion leaves my skin soft and supple AND rejuvenates my skin with organically farmed ingredients. We love that it has generous levels of nutrient rich ingredients that together treat, promote and save collagen, and restore body skin.

Brand Profile: ROIL by Hair Guru Amanda George

February 21, 2020 · 8 Comments

We tend to cherry-pick the best products from various brands to best meet our beauty needs. But sometimes we encounter a brand that each product is a home run. One such brand is ROIL by Amanda George.
ROIL luxury hair and body care products

ROIL luxury hair and body care products

ABOUT ROIL

Roil, pronounced ROYAL, is a luxe body and hair care line by hair guru Amanda George. Brand founder Amanda George travels extensively. She found even in the best hotels and resorts had few true luxury hair care products and amenities. So ROIL was born.

The line is available in select luxury hotels, such as Viceroy Hotel and Resorts. It is also available in ROIL salons (Beverly Hills, Cabo St Lucas, and Dubai), and from the RoilLife.com website.

This suite of luxury hair and body products contains complementary, non-competing scents and natural ingredients. These ingredients condition and nourish hair and skin.

About the Founder

Amanda George is a celebrity stylist. You have seen her hair wizardry on the red carpet.

Amanda also creates marvelous hair friendly cocktails using natural oils. These concoctions are hand-crafted and behave like gentle treating actives. They have the unique ability to make hair and skin look and act younger.

You may also know Amanda from when she was the George in Neil George.

Amanda’s Neil George range introduced me to the wonder of amla oil. It kept my naturally coarse, highly abused, older, graying, and frequently colored hair strong, bouncy and lush.

Once I contemplated cutting my long, damaged hair much shorter. Instead, Amanda’s amazing conditioning cocktails helped me fix my over-processed, brittle hair. I actually grew my hair longer, past my mid-back! And it looked healthy, had movement and acted like much younger hair.

I attempted to mix my own hair conditioning oils, but never got the same results. Probably because Amanda George is a hair ninja.

So when I heard Amanda George had a new haircare line called ROIL she got my attention, fast.

the ROIL Range

There is too much to say in one post.

Suffice it to say, Amanda is up to her old magic-in-a-bottle-natural-oil-concoction tricks with the ROIL line. And she has expanded to body care as well. There is a decided spa luxury feel to each product. But more importantly, each product delivers.

The ROIL Private Collection range includes Shine Shampoo and Conditioner, and the Healthy Hair Masque. The body line contains Hand Lotion, Hand Wash, Body Lotion and Body Wash.

We think you will love this brand. We will spill all the details on each ROIL product we have tried in individual posts, along with our customary Style Chicks research-verified ingredient profiles to explain how each product works.

Spoiler alert…

There are lots of hair-enhancing and skin-loving ingredients packed into these efficient but luxe products. These ingredient cocktails leave skin supple and hair looks and acts younger, fuller and so shiny.

There are several ROIL products we’ve purchased repeatedly. One has even landed on our Style Chicks Holy Grail for Hair short list. We think you’ll love it as well.

Stay tuned, and meanwhile, get a better look at the ROIL range at roillife.com

February 17, 2020 · 5 Comments

Vitamin C gets a helping hand with a combination of natural but powerful ingredients that revitalize skin. Each active in this formulation has a corresponding buddy ingredient. Every active has an improved mechanism because of their buddy. And together, they kick signs of aging to the curb.

Vitamin C serum is a holy grail product when it comes to tackling whatever skincare problem ails you. It treats sun damage, acne, acne scars, discoloration, age spots, fine lines, skin texture, and enlarged pores all while promoting collagen production. But even Vitamin C needs a little help from its’ friends.

In the case of Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum, those friends come in the form of some skin-friendly actives that are packed with skin-nourishing vitamins, hydration, lipids, fatty acids and other goodies that keep skin acting younger and looking vibrant.

Every active in this formulation has a corresponding buddy ingredient. Each active has an improved mechanism because of their buddy.
Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum featured on www.stylechicks.com

A solid formulation where all the ingredients support each other

When Actives Are BFFs

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum has active ingredients that work together. Some examples:

Konjac + Hyaluronic Acid

The Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac Acid combination do something special.

Both Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac have high hygroscopic properties. They pull moisture from the air. The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus the glucomannan in konjac maximize their combined water absorption capacity. Once they absorb into the skin, they link. They attract water and swell in the skin. I mean, really, really swell with water. All the can get. So much water. It gives the skin a nice plump look while simultaneously treating.

The Three Amigos

Ferulic, C, and E are all anti-aging antioxidants. Awesome individually, but together they are special. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology:

“Ferulic acid alone (and vitamins C and E) provide partial protection but vitamins C, E and ferulic acid [altogether] provide virtually complete protection.” [1]

The Vitamin C is part of a Serum Duo with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum but also available as a stand-alone product.  The Mad Hippie Serum Duo has an astounding number of actives between them, yet don’t irritate the skin.

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and Exfoliating Serum Duo

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and Exfoliating Serum Duo

Let’s examine these active ingredients in detail.

✽

Active Ingredient Profile

Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate)

A water-soluble C particularly effective on acne treatment and prevention. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is a stable precursor of vitamin C that ensures a constant delivery of vitamin C into the skin. [2] In layperson terms, it won’t turn brown or go bad. SAP has a strong antimicrobial effect.

Konjac Root

This unusual looking specimen seen below is Konjac Root. It contains glucomannan, a moisturizer similar to the natural hyaluronic found in young skin. It makes skin look and act younger.  It penetrates the upper layer of the epidermis and hydrates the surface.

Konjac root also contains a slew of skin-friendly vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, plus lipids and fatty acids. It smooths fine wrinkles and promotes collagen and elastin production.

Konjac also contains copper, a skincare superstar that builds collagen and the elusive but skin-vital elastin. Elastin is crucial because it reduces sagging and wrinkles and gives skin a springy and healthy look. Copper is rare and pricey skincare, which makes its’ presence in this formula all the more awesome. Copper also plays very well with the other actives in this formula. [3]

Konjac Root

ferulic acid

Ferulic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid) is naturally found in plant cell walls. Ferulic acid makes Vitamin C more stable, and is also an anti-oxidant. Ferulic acid is particularly good at protecting against aging caused by free radicals and environmental stress factors.

Hyaluronic acid

In addition to the humectant and plumping properties described above, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a microcarrier. Like a friend with VIP access, it helps active molecules penetrate deeper into the skin for better results.

HA assists all the actives and is particularly good at the dermal delivery of sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP).

Vitamin E

A protective antioxidant that lessens discoloration.  E makes damaged skin soft and pliable again while reducing wrinkle and fine line formation.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage

Clary sage strengthens the skin while balancing excess sebum. It calms and rejuvenates the skin in a manner similar to lavender but without as strong of a scent.

It contains linalyl acetate, an anti-inflammatory that heals skin irritation.[4]

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile flower

Chamomile flower

Chamomile Extract is excellent in a formulation with powerful actives because it contains flavones. These flavones inhibit the production of inflammation, even in deeper skin layers. [5]

Meanwhile, The apigenin in Chamomile protects the skin barrier. [6] This gentle and hypoallergenic extract soothes skin, heals burns, and is great for helping skin recover and benefit from chemical peels.

Chamomile Extract is an antioxidant that also kills the bacteria that causes acne while soothing skin. [7]

The chamomile helps enable the daily use of this serum without irritation or skin peeling.

Chamomile

✽

What We Love About It

This is a particularly impressive C serum. As a stable C, it is good to the last drop: no degrading or turning brown.

The ingredient combo is exceptionally effective and hits all the bases.  Skin appears refined after use without redness or tightness. There is no peeling skin or dryness. It is powerful but there is no need to skip a day due to irritation.

Unlike many C serums, it is not sticky or tacky on dry down. It doesn’t pill or get crusty under my sunscreen and makeup.✽class=”toc_list”

The Vitamin C is part of a Serum Duo with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum but also available as a stand-alone product.  Read about Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum ingredients and our experience here.

How to Use This Serum

After cleansing, apply just a half a dropper full daily to the face and throat. Follow with a moisturizer so the hyaluronic and Konjac acids can work their moisture-binding, skin-plumping, hygroscopic magic.

Apply twice a day if this is your only serum, or once a day if using the MH Exfoliative Serum or another nighttime favorite.

Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

✽

RESULTS

The impact of Konjac and C together is so impressive: dark spots fade fairly quickly. Paired with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum at night, this duo makes for an impressive one-two punch against aging and skin issues like discoloration, acne, fine lines, and skin texture. And it does it with zero irritation.

If skin aging, poor texture, acne or sun damage make you want to apply ALL the things, this C Serum and the serum duo contain many excellent actives in the right combination and proportions to get the job done without causing any irritation.

✽

WHERE TO FIND IT

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum is available at Mad Hippie as part of a serum combo or separately at Mad Hippie and Ulta, and also Whole Foods stores

Apply one half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

The Mad Hippie Serum Duo has an astounding number of actives between them, yet don’t irritate the skin.

How to use ProBerry No More Yellow GojiBerry Shampoo

February 16, 2020 · 10 Comments

Curly-haired gals who color and highlight have fewer brass toning options. Brass toners are notoriously chemical-laden. They dehydrate already damaged tresses. So I volunteered in a heartbeat to try a hair rehabilitating brass toner. It’s called ProBerry No More Yellow Gojiberry Shampoo. It contains Certified Goji Berry Extract, known to repair damaged hair, soothe dry scalps, and promote hair growth. And as the title indicates, it completely negates brassy yellow tones.
ProBerry No More Yellow Goji Berry Shampoo

ProBerry No More Yellow Goji Berry Shampoo

I cringe when my sunkissed highlights turn brassy. And right when my hair could use some love, I further dehydrate it with a brass shampoo toning treatment that leaves dry hair crunchy feeling. Even the brass conditioners from the salon aren’t all that conditioning. It is like trading brass for dryness.

Why use A brass shampoo that rehabilitates hair

Goji Berries improve hair and scalp health

By the time your hair has brassy tones, your hair has probably seen some things. Bad things like hard water, oxidation, bleaching, color correcting, color processing, highlights, or dyes.

Or perhaps your hair just experiences natural aging causing a yellowing or dingy tone on gray or white hair.

Are you a natural blonde with healthy but too yellow locks? Then keep your blonde hair healthy with a safe toner that hydrates.

packaging

The shampoo comes boxed and capped. There are directions and a click-lock pump dispenser. I like this feature to avoid shampoo leakage and pigment staining when not in use.

What Makes ProBerry special

  1. Many anti-brass/purple toner shampoos dehydrate the hair, leaving hair feeling dry and crunchy. Many toning shampoos include some botanical to offset the damaging effects of toning. Goji Berries offers significant benefits
  2. It doesn’t leave a weird residue film atop hair that is detectable in office or bright sunlight.
  3. it is the most intense blue-violet purple I’ve seen, and I’ve tried most of them, from drug store to salon to professional only products. This is not a watered-down lavender. It is deep blue PURPLE. There will be no yellow tones after one wash.
  4. No parabens.
One wash leaves brassy hair cool and healthy.

ProBerry No More Yellow Gojiberry Shampoo is a deeply pigmented formulation that rehabilitates hair

Very pigmented!

curly girl approved ingredients

If you have naturally curly, coarse or brittle hair, brass control is difficult as already delicate hair once dyed or bleached can become practically parched. All the ingredients in this formulation are considered safe for curly hair and dry hair types. Notably:

  • Most of the Curly Girl community consider the cleansing agent in this formulation, Decyl glucoside, to be gentle and safe for delicate curls and brittle hair types.
  • Acid violet 43 is considered safe within an otherwise safe formulation, such as this one.
  • Glycerin is a natural, non-toxic, vegan-friendly humectant that helps hair retain moisture. It is hydrating for all hair types and especially helpful to curly, coarse and colored hair.
  • Free of parabens and sulfates.

And notably, this formulation contains Lycium Barbarum fruit extract, better known as Goji Berries.

Goji Berry Fast Facts

Goji berries in this shampoo has vitamins to repair damaged hair and aid in hair growth.

The Goji berries in this shampoo have vitamins to repair damaged hair and aid in hair growth. Lots of products with natural ingredients make promises, but Goji berries are packed with several research-backed nutrients.

Goji berries are also known as wolfberries. They are considered a superfood. These berries are grown without pesticides or other chemicals. Goji berries have nutrients to repair damaged follicles, nourish the scalp and even help healthy hair growth.

Research shows the following topical application properties for hair and scalp:

  • Goji berries are rich in vitamin C to synthesize the collagen necessary for hair growth.[1]
  • Goji Berries contain 19 amino acids, the building blocks of the hair protein keratin. Amino acids penetrate the hair shaft to repair and strengthen. Amino acids are also hydrating and increase the efficacy of other hydrating humectant agents in this formula, such as glycerin.[2]
  • Goji berries contain trace minerals to topically feed follicles including zinc, iron, calcium, germanium, selenium, and phosphorus.
  • Copper aids hair growth and follicle health.  The topical application of copper increases the size of shrunken hair follicles. It stops hair thinning and often reduces premature graying. [3]
  • Goji berries are antioxidants that contain vitamins B1, B2, B6, and vitamin E, plus beta-sisterol, an anti-inflammatory agent.
  • Linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid has anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties for hair and scalp. Omega-6 makes hair feel lush and stronger. [4]

Intense deep blue purple Pigment

This is a very intense violet purple. More saturated and powerful than others you may have tried. See the photos in the pigment section below.

Who an intense blue-violet toner can help

ProBerry No More Yellow Gojiberry Shampoo removes unwanted yellow tones from:

  • Dingy white or gray hair that needs brightening
  • Natural or dyed Platinums and Blondes
  • Brunettes or Brondes with blonde highlights that have gone brassy
Keep yellow tones out of your natural or enhanced blonde

THE PIGMENT

The pigment looks almost black in its’ concentrated form when pumped out of the bottle. Check out the hue of this shampoo as seen here with some fingerpainting with ProBerry on a white plate.

DIRECTIONS OF USE

This shampoo comes with a sturdy pair of gloves. The toner pigment can stain skin, nails, and cuticles, so use the gloves to disperse and massage in the shampoo.

Comes with a set of gloves so hands/fingernails don’t get stained

Shake well before use to distribute the pigment.

Just two to five minutes is enough to remove the yellow brassy tones!

No More Yellow Directions: Just two to five minutes is enough to remove the yellow brassy tones!

My Experience

I am a dark brunette with red undertones dyed to a 7 base with 8 and 9 level blonde highlights. Proberry No More Yellow tones my highlights nicely without disrupting my base. While intended for blondes and platinums, the deep blue-purple is effective on brondes as well.

I am impressed with the moisturizing benefits of this shampoo and find it especially useful after coloring or when yellow tones creep in, once or twice a month.

If you are enduring a color correction, this hydrating purple toning shampoo is a must-have.

Tips & Observations:

  • It is very concentrated. Platinum, white and lighter shades can pick up a purple tinge if left in too long. Leave it in for only a few minutes and build up. Since it is good for your hair, you can always repeat.
  • It is not especially lathery. Don’t let the lack of suds trick you into using too much.
  • Use the gloves even if you typically skip gloves with other toning shampoos.
  • Dry Toning: Many have success combing purple shampoo onto dry hair and leaving it on for 15-20 minutes. This gives better control, greater pigment, and more even distribution on brassy sections and highlights. We recommend caution on this dry hair approach when using ProBerry No More Yellow. First, it isn’t really necessary from the standpoint of an adequate pigment deposit. If you want to comb through and control placement, don’t leave ProBerry No More Yellow in as long as the less pigmented formulas. At least the first time, only for a minute or two at the most. It is a more hydrating treatment when hair is wet.

Very concentrated pigment, a little goes a long way!

We are so impressed by this gentle paraben-free formulation to rehabilitate dry, colored or highlighted hair while fighting brassiness with an especially deep blue-purple tone.
