Why We Love Using Konjac Root with Hyaluronic Acid

September 5, 2022 ·

This Konjac Root and Hyaluronic Acid INGREDIENT GUIDE explains the skincare benefits of using Konjac Root and Hyaluronic Acid together.

Skincare Dynamic Duos

Many ingredients have excellent synergy.

Together these “dynamic duos” kick common skincare woes to the curb.

This article focuses on Konjac Root with Hyaluronic Acid.
Our next article will focus on Ferulic combined with Vitamins C and E.

Konjac Acid comes from this Konjac Root

Konjac Acid comes from this Konjac Root

Konjac Root + Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid helps many active ingredients penetrate the skin. Some examples are:

  1. MSM
  2. Vitamin C
  3. retinol
  4. peptides
  5. niacinamide or B3
  6. Sea Buckthorn Oil

These ingredients each do their best work in the deeper skin layers.

But together Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac Root do something special.

Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac both have high hygroscopic properties. This is the ability to pull moisture into the skin.

Used Alone

Konjac Root

Konjac Root contains glucomannan.

Glucomannan is similar to the kind of hyaluronic acid seen in young skin.

Glucomannan penetrates the upper layer of the epidermis and hydrates the surface and make it look younger.

Konjac root has skin-friendly vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, plus lipids and fatty acids.

It smooths fine wrinkles and promotes collagen and elastin production.

Konjac contains copper, a skincare superstar that builds collagen and elastin.

Elastin is crucial because it reduces sagging and wrinkles and gives skin a springy and healthy look.

Copper is rare and pricey skincare, which makes Konjac Acid a skincare treasure. Copper also plays well with other actives. [1]

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the skin, but it depletes as we age.

It keeps in moisture to provide cushioning in joints and the skin. It can plump a wrinkle, for example, to appear less severe.

Hyaluronic Acid “pulls” moisture from the air into the skin.

It also pulls active ingredients deeper into skin.

The deeper active ingredients can work, the better the overall result.

What Happens When Konjac and Hyaluronic are Paired Together

The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus the glucomannan in konjac maximize their combined water absorption capacity.

But the really special thing is this:

Once they absorb into the skin, they link.

They attract water TOGETHER and swell the skin.

I mean, really, really swell with water. All they can get.

So much water.

The result? It gives the skin a nice plump look while simultaneously treating the skin.

Skincare Products with Konjac Root + Hyaluronic Acid

A few clean beauty skincare products already combine Konjac Root and Hyaluronic Acid for you.

The best skincare product for you depends on your overall skincare goals.

  • Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum adds the power of Konjac Root and Hyaluronic Acid to Ferulic Acid and Vitamin C. It is a really Vitamin C serum level up.
  • Civant Meladerm combines Konjac Root and Hyaluronic Acid with natural ingredients to fade discoloration. And it does it without hydroquinone.

Summary of Why We Love Using Konjac Root with Hyaluronic Acid

Konjac Root and Hyaluronic Acid hold moisture very well and make skin look and act younger.

Since they both draw ingredients into skin, they pair well with a third ingredient.

The deeper ingredients like retinol, Vitamin C or MSM can penetrate into the skin, the better results you will see. This is especially true on scars, texture, and photodamage.

Stay tuned for the next article in this series discussing Ferulic Acid, Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

August 20, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Jeffrey James Botanicals was clean beauty skincare before clean beauty was cool. Have you ever found a product that you love so much that you keep a backup bottle? Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum is that product for me.

Jeffrey James Botanicals THE Serum is one of our favorite products: we always keep a spare so we never run out.

Jeffrey James Botanicals THE Serum is one of our favorite products: we always keep a spare so we never run out.

About JEFFREY JAMES BOTANICALS

Jeffrey James Botanicals is a luxury organic line that uses amazing ingredients for face and body skincare. These products truly deliver.

Jeffrey James Botanicals focuses on quality ingredients that hydrate skin.

Founder Jeffrey James was ahead of his time in producing clean beauty skincare that works. Packed with gentle yet effective natural ingredients, each formulation is masterfully balanced.

Let’s take a closer look at Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum’s stellar formulation:

Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum Key Ingredients

Aloe Vera plant nourishes and soothes skin

Organic Aloe Vera provides a nourishing, non-irritating base for the actives in this formulation

Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf

Aloe Vera

Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf is Aloe Vera.

Aloe Vera  feeds the skin with essential nutrients and makes skin smooth, hydrated, and soft.

It provides nourishment to the skin as it contains Vitamins A, C, Bs, and E as well as minerals and enzymes. This skin food heals, hydrates, and accelerates skin cell growth.

Aloe Vera has an enzyme that repairs skin cells. Aloe Vera soothes minor burns, scrapes, and heals the skin.

It provides anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide

A botanical hyaluronic acid from the seed of the Cassia angustifolium plant.

High in anti-oxidants and moisturizing.

Its’ flavonoid compounds help defend skin’s surface against damage from environmental pollutants.[1,2]

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is a non-synthesized form of Hyaluronic Acid. It is a humectant that offers stronger moisture retention properties than regular HA.   It is found naturally and in ample supply in young skin, but depletes with age.

Sodium Hyaluronate has a lower molecular size than to other Hyaluronic Acids, so can penetrate deeper into the skin and bring other actives along with it.

The Sodium Hyaluronate in this formulation is vegan.

Lavender Oil softens hair and skin

Lavender

Lavandula Angustifolia

Lavender Flower Water softens and conditions the skin.

Lavender’s anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties keep skin healthy. It has soothing properties to calm any imbalances such as inflammation or dry skin flaking.

The linalyl acetate in lavender enhances cell growth in the skin.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a sulfur compound trace and trace mineral found naturally in the body.  MSM is also a natural sulfur found in some plants, nuts and cruciferous vegetables. It supports healthy tissue development including skin.

MSM applied topically brightens the skin while moisturizing. MSM is excellent with Vitamin C because it enhances the production of “collagen bundles” that prevent skin sagging.

Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel

Hamamelis Virginiana

Better known as Witch Hazel.  Witch Hazel is derived from witch hazel shrub bark.

Witch Hazel is a natural toner. It is a natural plant-derived astringent that tones and cleanses.

Unlike most toners and astringents, it is not harsh on the skin. Rather, Witch Hazel calms irritation. It also tightens pores and removes impurities.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

A stable form of Vitamin C known as SAP.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a water-soluble C particularly effective in acne treatment and prevention. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is a stable precursor of vitamin C that ensures a constant delivery of vitamin C into the skin. [3]

It won’t turn brown or go bad. SAP has a strong antimicrobial effect.

Jojoba Seeds

Jojoba Seeds

Organic Simmondsia Chinensis

Organic Jojoba Oil.  Jojoba oil is an emollient, made of 98% monounsaturated fats.

Jojoba removes impurities and flakes, reduces inflammation, and soothes skin.

Jojoba gives elasticity and softness to the skin without causing acne or clogged pores.

Flowering Camellia Sinensis

Flowering Camellia Sinensis

Organic Camellia Sinensis

Organic Green Tea. Green Tea in skincare feeds and moisturizes the skin, calms irritation and is an excellent antioxidant.

Green Tea Extract Green tea contains polyphenols that soothe skin while providing antioxidants. Polyphenols may improve sun-damaged skin. [4]

Arnica

Arnica

Arnica Montana Flower Extract

Organic Arnica Montana Flower Extract is derived from the Arnica flower.

Arnica flower is a natural anti-inflammatory. It reduces puffiness without causing dryness or dehydration.

It also decreases bruising and inflammation. Arnica promotes healing and reduces swelling.[5]

Organic Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract

Calendula AKA Marigold

Best known as marigold. Calendula flower promotes the regeneration of new tissue and soothes damaged skin.

Studies have shown that calendula can increase collagen production and stimulates epithelial cell growth to promote cell turnover [6].

Licorice root

Licorice root

Organic Glycyrrhiza Glabra

Better known as Licorice Root Extract.

Licorice root contains glabridin, a potent antioxidant that soothes skin.

It lightens dark circles gently, improves uneven tone and skin redness.

It is safe for even sensitive skin. [7]

It removes discoloration naturally from delicate areas of the face, throat, and hands.

Glycerin

This Kosher Vegetable Glycerin is a natural vegetable-derived, non-toxic humectant that helps the skin to retain moisture.

Glycerin fills in gaps in dryer skin which makes skin look better and keeps the outer layer of the skin intact.

PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS EXTRACT on StyleChicks.com

Pelargonium Gravolens

Better known as Geranium Flower Oil.

Pelargonium Graveolens Extract is a sweet-scented, rare geranium. It boosts skin elasticity and regulates sebum production. It is a very good antioxidant for the skin. It reduces inflammation by releasing excess water into skin tissue. [8]

The extract is superior to the oil as it removes the possibility of skin irritation due to the fragrance.

Tocopheryl Acetate

A form of Vitamin E that comes from plant seeds.

It is a skin-softening antioxidant that makes damaged skin (scars, sun-damaged) pliable.  Once the skin is pliable, other treating ingredients can work their magic.

Royal Jelly

Royal Jelly Extract

Royal Jelly Extract is a bee product.

Royal Jelly is the gelatinous substance bees make to feed the queen bee. Royal Jelly is an anti-inflammatory anti-oxidant filled with skin-friendly nutrients. It smooths fine lines and wrinkles and enables skin repair. [9]

And bonus: Royal Jelly can promote collagen production. [10]

Verbascum Thapsus

Verbascum Thapsus is also known as the Mullen plant.

In skincare, it provides a plant-based, skin-protecting anti-oxidant.

The Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum Experience

With 50% Hyaluronic Acid, Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum plumps my skin and makes it smooth, dewy, vibrant, and keeps it that way all day. My skin just drinks it in!

It is ideal under makeup as it does not leave my skin sticky or tacky.  It will not pill under sunscreen.

Unlike some HAs, the surface of my skin does not feel dry after a few hours. Hyaluronic Acid draws in so much moisture from the air that sometimes skin is left parched. The Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum formula has several hydrating ingredients to counteract that problem.

Vitamin C serum is a holy grail product when it comes to tackling whatever skincare problem ails you. It treats sun damage, acne, acne scars, discoloration, age spots, fine lines, skin texture, and enlarged pores all while promoting collagen production. But even Vitamin C needs a little help from its’ friends.

In the case of Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum, those friends come in the form of some skin-friendly actives that are packed with skin-nourishing vitamins, hydration, lipids, fatty acids and other goodies that keep skin acting younger and looking vibrant.

Every active in this formulation has a corresponding buddy ingredient. Each active has an improved mechanism because of their buddy.

A solid formulation where all the ingredients support each other

When Actives Are BFFs

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum has active ingredients that work together. Some examples:

Konjac + Hyaluronic Acid

The Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac Acid combination do something special.

Both Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac have high hygroscopic properties. They pull moisture from the air. The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus the glucomannan in konjac maximize their combined water absorption capacity. Once they absorb into the skin, they link. They attract water and swell in the skin. I mean, really, really swell with water. All the can get. So much water. It gives the skin a nice plump look while simultaneously treating.

The Three Amigos

Ferulic, C, and E are all anti-aging antioxidants. Awesome individually, but together they are special. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology:

“Ferulic acid alone (and vitamins C and E) provide partial protection but vitamins C, E and ferulic acid [altogether] provide virtually complete protection.” [1]

The Vitamin C is part of a Serum Duo with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum but also available as a stand-alone product.  The Mad Hippie Serum Duo has an astounding number of actives between them, yet don’t irritate the skin.

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and Exfoliating Serum Duo

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and Exfoliating Serum Duo

Let’s examine these active ingredients in detail.

✽

Active Ingredient Profile

Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate)

A water-soluble C particularly effective on acne treatment and prevention. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is a stable precursor of vitamin C that ensures a constant delivery of vitamin C into the skin. [2] In layperson terms, it won’t turn brown or go bad. SAP has a strong antimicrobial effect.

Konjac Root

This unusual looking specimen seen below is Konjac Root. It contains glucomannan, a moisturizer similar to the natural hyaluronic found in young skin. It makes skin look and act younger.  It penetrates the upper layer of the epidermis and hydrates the surface.

Konjac root also contains a slew of skin-friendly vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, plus lipids and fatty acids. It smooths fine wrinkles and promotes collagen and elastin production.

Konjac also contains copper, a skincare superstar that builds collagen and the elusive but skin-vital elastin. Elastin is crucial because it reduces sagging and wrinkles and gives skin a springy and healthy look. Copper is rare and pricey skincare, which makes its’ presence in this formula all the more awesome. Copper also plays very well with the other actives in this formula. [3]

Konjac Root

ferulic acid

Ferulic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid) is naturally found in plant cell walls. Ferulic acid makes Vitamin C more stable, and is also an anti-oxidant. Ferulic acid is particularly good at protecting against aging caused by free radicals and environmental stress factors.

Hyaluronic acid

In addition to the humectant and plumping properties described above, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a microcarrier. Like a friend with VIP access, it helps active molecules penetrate deeper into the skin for better results.

HA assists all the actives and is particularly good at the dermal delivery of sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP).

Vitamin E

A protective antioxidant that lessens discoloration.  E makes damaged skin soft and pliable again while reducing wrinkle and fine line formation.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage

Clary sage strengthens the skin while balancing excess sebum. It calms and rejuvenates the skin in a manner similar to lavender but without as strong of a scent.

It contains linalyl acetate, an anti-inflammatory that heals skin irritation.[4]

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile flower

Chamomile flower

Chamomile Extract is excellent in a formulation with powerful actives because it contains flavones. These flavones inhibit the production of inflammation, even in deeper skin layers. [5]

Meanwhile, The apigenin in Chamomile protects the skin barrier. [6] This gentle and hypoallergenic extract soothes skin, heals burns, and is great for helping skin recover and benefit from chemical peels.

Chamomile Extract is an antioxidant that also kills the bacteria that causes acne while soothing skin. [7]

The chamomile helps enable the daily use of this serum without irritation or skin peeling.

Chamomile

✽

What We Love About It

This is a particularly impressive C serum. As a stable C, it is good to the last drop: no degrading or turning brown.

The ingredient combo is exceptionally effective and hits all the bases.  Skin appears refined after use without redness or tightness. There is no peeling skin or dryness. It is powerful but there is no need to skip a day due to irritation.

Unlike many C serums, it is not sticky or tacky on dry down. It doesn’t pill or get crusty under my sunscreen and makeup.✽class=”toc_list”

The Vitamin C is part of a Serum Duo with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum but also available as a stand-alone product.  Read about Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum ingredients and our experience here.

How to Use This Serum

After cleansing, apply just a half a dropper full daily to the face and throat. Follow with a moisturizer so the hyaluronic and Konjac acids can work their moisture-binding, skin-plumping, hygroscopic magic.

Apply twice a day if this is your only serum, or once a day if using the MH Exfoliative Serum or another nighttime favorite.

Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

✽

RESULTS

The impact of Konjac and C together is so impressive: dark spots fade fairly quickly. Paired with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum at night, this duo makes for an impressive one-two punch against aging and skin issues like discoloration, acne, fine lines, and skin texture. And it does it with zero irritation.

If skin aging, poor texture, acne or sun damage make you want to apply ALL the things, this C Serum and the serum duo contain many excellent actives in the right combination and proportions to get the job done without causing any irritation.

✽

WHERE TO FIND IT

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum is available at Mad Hippie as part of a serum combo or separately at Mad Hippie and Ulta, and also Whole Foods stores

Apply one half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

The Mad Hippie Serum Duo has an astounding number of actives between them, yet don’t irritate the skin.

Why Pair Retinol with Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid

October 23, 2017 · 7 Comments

Here at Style Chicks, we talk about Retinol a lot. A lot, a lot, a lot. And for good reason, as recently discussed, it treats acne to wrinkles and everything in between. And for all our jabbering about how Retinol can single-handedly do all the things, why do we still think it should be paired with Vitamin C Serum and Hyaluronic Acid? Because Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid make Retinol do all the things faster, deeper and better. My Dermatologist recommended using Retinol and Vitamin C daily for optimal collagen production and anti-aging benefits. Read on to learn why Retinol, Vitamin C, and Hyaluronic Acid are the Three Amazing Amigos of Skincare.

Just a small dollop of Lordsbury Retinol+C Cream Moisturizer combines the power of Retinol, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, plus a rich moisturizing cream suitable for the eyes, face, and throat

Retinol, for those of you new to Style Chicks, is one of our favorite beauty weapons. Retinol refines skin texture, it breaks up discoloration, it quells acne and reverses skin damage. It eradicates dead skin like a slow-mo chemical peel leaving younger, dewy skin in its place. And as an unexpected bonus, blackheads practically leap out of your face and very few ever return because those pores are empty and stay empty. But there are two other active ingredients that when used in conjunction with Retinol can help it work even better, that being Vitamin C Serum and Hyaluronic Acid.

VITAMIN C AND RETINOL

Vitamin C Serum, the topical form of Vitamin C, delivers Vitamin C to the surface layers of the skin. In doing so, it lightens discoloration, helps reverse sun damage and helps quell acne. Sound familiar? Why yes, it sounds an awful lot like what Retinol does. Then why bother using both? Because Vitamin C is the Ying to Retinol’s Yang, accomplishing the same general task but in a different way so that together, they complete the job. Some examples:

  • Where Retinol tackles discoloration by breaking apart the dark pigment, Vitamin C fades any discoloration and does especially well on smaller specks of scars, age spots, and sun damage.
  • Where Retinol refines the texture of skin so it looks strong, Vitamin C builds collagen to strengthen and support it so it is strong.
  • Retinol fights a pimple from happening by cleaning out pores and eradicating bacteria-trapping dead skin, Vitamin C reduces the inflammation that makes small blemishes into big ones.
  • Both Retinol and Vitamin C help promote collagen, but each are involved at different stages in the collagen production process. Together, they ensure the maximum amount of collagen is produced.

The point of all this is these two ingredients accomplish the same end result, but in ways that the other one can’t. And together, they really get things done well. What a team!

Lordsbury Retinol+C Moisturizer contains BOTH Retinol and 20% Vitamin C Serum for TWICE a day use with ZERO irritation

Hyaluronic Acid and Retinol

Retinol quickly exfoliates and resurfaces the top layers of the skin. After a few weeks, many of us make the same mistake: “If a little Retinol is good, then MORE will be better!” Then the redness and irritation come. Applying a larger amount Retinol won’t get it deeper into your skin, it can only burn the surface layers. But when Retinol is paired with Hyaluronic Acid, it can reach deeper layers of the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally present in the human body. It also comes in creams and serums, such as found in Lordsbury Retinol+C Cream Moisturizer. Hyaluronic Acid makes skin instantly dewy and soft, it plumps wrinkles and helps Retinol sink deeper into skin to address deep wrinkles, scars, and discoloration

Hyaluronic Acid is another Style Chicks favorite ingredient because it has the unique capability to absorb enough moisture to plump the skin. It also is a small enough molecule that it can penetrate deeper skin layers. This means any active ingredient, like Retinol and Vitamin C, when paired with Hyaluronic Acid can slip into these deep skin layers like it has a guest VIP pass, meaning Retinol paired with Hyaluronic Acid can tackle even very deep, old scars and sun-damaged layers of skin.

The deeper these ingredients get, the better the supporting collagen structure becomes, and even older and darker scars fade. When Hyaluronic Acid helps Retinol sink into the deeper skin layers, it helps eradicate uneven skin texture and tone, including sun damage and deep scars.

TIP: If you have acne, old scars, sun damage or wrinkles that even glycolic peels do not make a major dent into, then the damage is deep in the skin and a Hyaluronic/Retinol combo can be very helpful to your type of skin problems.

You can purchase Hyaluronic Acid and Retinol separately and apply them both at the same time, or you can use a Retinol that already contains Hyaluronic Acid, such as Lordsbury Retinol+C Cream Moisturizer. I also prefer Lordsbury Retinol+C Cream because all of us are tempted from time to time to slather on a bit too much Retinol, and since Lordsbury+C Cream Moisturizer has so many buffering emollient ingredients, it’s almost impossible to over-do it. Whereas with a prescription Retinol, it’s very easy to irritate the skin.

Lordsbury Retinol+C Retinol Cream moisturizer has a beauty powerhouse of ingredients

Lordsbury Retinol+C Retinol Cream moisturizer has several moisturizing ingredients so it is gentle enough for daily use

DERMATOLOGIST RECOMMENDATION FOR SKIN OVER THIRTY

My dermatologist told me that especially for skin over 30, the standard is Vitamin C during the day and Retinol at night, and apply a moisturizer on top, plus eye cream. This combo is effective but somewhat drying, and it is time-consuming to have so many layers of product.

I found it far most cost-effective and practical to just apply one product, Lordsbury Retinol+C Cream Moisturizer, which contains 2.5% Retinol, 20% Vitamin C Serum, Hyaluronic Acid, and a host of buffering moisturizers to tolerate the potent ingredients, including Wildcrafted Green Tea, Jojoba Oil, Sunflower Oil, Shea Butter, and Aloe Vera. These buffering moisturizers enable me to even use it even around my delicate eye area and throat twice a day.

One pump is all you need for face, neck and decolletage.

One pump of Lordsbury Retinol+C Cream Moisturizer is all you need for face and eyes to get a prescription strength Retinol, 20% Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid to make it work overtime, and a host of moisturizers that even buffer the delicate eye area from irritation.

CONCLUSION

Retinol can work wonders, but Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid can make a good thing even better by perfecting the tasks Retinol does well and enabling Retinol to access the deeper skin layers where old scars and sun damage may lurk. Hyaluronic Acid also helps Vitamin C and Retinol produce collagen at the deeper layers of the skin, which enables better support against wrinkles and sagging. Lordsbury Retinol+C combines all three ingredients together with many natural, soothing moisturizers, for a one-stop, all-in-one moisturizing treatment trifecta.
