Favorite Things: reVive dpl® IIa for Professional Wrinkle Reduction and Acne Treatment Light Therapy

November 24, 2019 · 10 Comments

Back in March 2018, we reviewed the reVive dpl® IIa, a home light therapy device. It has continued to be one of our personal favorite skincare device for reducing signs of aging and acne. The Style Chicks Skincare Team is astounded at the efficacy of the device and how easy it is to use.

reVive is having an amazing 40% off sitewide starting Thursday, November 28th through the end of the day Tuesday, December 3rd, no promo code necessary. In case you didn’t catch it the first time, we wanted to bring you our review of this astounding device that delivers medi-spa level results in the convenience of your own home, and at a fraction of the price, especially with the amazing Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale, they will be offering. We also have added a few tips we picked up in the time we have been using it!

So let’s get to it!

As part of our Style Chicks Hair and Skin Care Series, we’re exploring the advantages of home light therapy for improving skin. LED light therapy builds collagen, reduces wrinkles, improves acne, fades discoloration and scars. A high-quality light therapy device is a worthwhile investment. We recently tried the reVive dpl® IIa â“Professional Wrinkle Reduction and Acne Treatment Light Therapy, which is an FDA-cleared, OTC Class II medical device. It is a lightweight panel big enough to cover the entire face at once. It uses powerful LED diodes that emit safe light therapy that tackles acne and wrinkles while building collagen.

Revive DPL Light Device

WHAT LIGHT THERAPY DOES FOR SKIN

Backed by numerous clinical studies, blue and red light therapy are both effective, pain-free, chemical-free, non-invasive way to improve the skin’s texture, tone, and firmness.

WHAT THE REVIVE dpl® IIa PANEL DOES

This device is for acne treatment and wrinkles. Today we focus primarily on the anti-wrinkle/anti-aging aspect of this device.

It reduces wrinkles by promoting collagen production. More collagen means stronger, more elastic skin with less sagging.

The device also improves skin tone, texture and reduces hyperpigmentation, which promotes the appearance of healthy, glowing, and youthful skin.

The reVive dpl® IIa is the only full-face professional light therapy devices with FDA clearance for in-home use.

THE REVIVE DPL® IIa SET INCLUDES:

  • Device
  • AC/DC power supply
  • Instruction manual
  • Goggles
  • One year warranty

HOW DOES THE REVIVE DPL® IIa RATE?

As beauty bloggers, we’ve tried many at-home light therapy products. The reVive DPL® IIa is in a class by itself. This light is powerful and consistently even, and feels much more like an in-office caliber treatment than other commercially available light therapy devices we’ve tried.

GOGGLES

The goggles say optional, but in my opinion, they are mandatory. The reason is that even with the goggles AND my eyes closed, I can still see the brightness of the light, just like a professional in-office IPL or light therapy treatment.

But I do like using these goggles, though, as they’re designed to fit just over the actual eye, exposing the maximum amount of orbital skin area for treatment. This allows dark circles, sagging upper lids and browbones, and the general orbital skin to get treatment, including crow’s feet.

The goggles are adjustable to be secure but comfortable.

FULL-FACE TREATMENT AT ONCE

This book-sized device covers your entire face (and much of throat) at once, making for faster and evener treatment.

DEEPLY SATURATED COLORED LIGHT

This device produces a powerful light! The whole wall behind you will be illuminated with color like a neon sign. Once you see that, other at-home light therapy devices pale in comparison. It’s not that other devices can’t deliver results, but if I’m going to spend the time and money do light therapy at home, I want a powerfully effective device.

MULTIPLE LIGHT THERAPY MODES

Choose the red or blue light setting, or use both at once.

RED LIGHT WRINKLE SETTING

RED LIGHT jump-starts tissue rejuvenation by increasing blood flow and collagen stimulation. Red light therapy significantly improves skin complexion, tone, and texture. It also reduces roughness, wrinkles, and fine lines. In clinical studies, Ultrasonographic tests show red light therapy increases collagen.

BLUE LIGHT ACNE SETTING

BLUE LIGHT is used to treat acne because it eliminates bacteria, reduces inflammation and redness, stabilizes oil glands, fades old and new scars and discoloration. This is especially helpful for adult acne, as the harsh drying methods we may have used as a teen are too rough on adult skin, especially wrinkling skin.

COMBO MODE: BOTH RED AND BLUE AT ONCE SETTING

Treat wrinkles and acne simultaneously with both red and blue light. This mode uses all of the colored light diodes for a super-powerful light therapy treatment. The combo works very effectively for wrinkles and maximizes light therapy based collagen production while fading discoloration and redness.

Interested in the expanded details on how these specific colors of light therapy work from a clinical view? Read our upcoming post covering all the need to know the science behind home light therapy.

Using the device for a dual red and blue light therapy treatment. The diodes are powerful enough to cover my face, neck, palms, and the wall behind me in intense colored light

EASE OF USE

It’s comfortable on the skin, there is no burning or any discomfort at all, it’s quite relaxing. The device opens like a book, and it’s easy to hold the device for treatment right on the face. It’s lightweight like a Kindle tablet and can be propped up if needed.

It beeps at every minute interval until the treatment is over and it shuts itself off.

TIP: Before a light therapy session, apply an SPF-free serum or moisturizer for maximum benefit. We love the When Revivifying line from When Beauty. This decadent three-product line (which we will be reviewing soon), contains Brown Algae Extract from Jeju Island in South Korea. Brown Algae is photo-reactive, so using it with the reVive dpl IIa amplifies the effects!

This device is a collagen-building lifesaver for those with sensitive skin who cannot tolerate Vitamin C serums or Retinol because it works without any irritation, redness or dryness.

The device is lightweight like a Kindle tablet and opens like a book for a double paneled treatment display

The device is lightweight like a Kindle tablet and opens like a book for a double paneled treatment display

RESULTS

The reduction of wrinkles, fine lines, and crows feet are the hallmark of this light therapy device. My eleven lines appeared less deep and long even after a few uses. I find both eleven and smile lines look much smoother the day after I use the reVive DPL® IIa and my skin appears brighter.

I’m particularly happy with the ability to treat the eye area including crows feet, my undereye area gets a nice treatment of wrinkle reduction and lightening discoloration. The long-term ability to build collagen along the upper eyelid and browbone turns back time in a way that a topical eye cream alone cannot.

When I use the device at night before bed, my skin also has a lovely glow to it in the morning, I look more vibrant and awake, my skin tone seems more rosy and even.

Since using the device, I tend to use less foundation and concealer so the glow of my skin can shine through.

CONCLUSION

An outstanding addition to your at-home anti-aging arsenal, the reVive dpl® IIa Professional Wrinkle Reduction and Acne Treatment Light Therapy provides powerful, professional quality results in an easy-to-use device that takes just minutes to use. This highly worthwhile investment treats face, throat, decolletage, and hands whenever you want.

This FDA-cleared, OTC Class II medical device is lightweight and covers the entire face at once for fast, even treatment. The three-light mode settings deliver precious collagen-building therapeutic light, which over the course of a few months, makes a meaningful difference in the strength, firmness, texture, and appearance of skin.

5 Weird Skincare Trends You May Want to Try

November 21, 2019 · 2 Comments

Throughout the years, the skincare industry has gone through a constant evolution of trends. You’ve probably already heard of 24-karat gold face masks, the multi-step Korean skincare routine, bubbling face masks, and scary vampire facials — the list goes on and on. The thing about weird skincare trends is that they tend to be more shocking and Instagram-worthy rather than helpful to your skin. While some of these trends may be questionable in terms of their efficacy, here are some recent yet slightly strange trends that come with actual skin benefits to get you that gorgeous glow in no time:

1. CBD and Hemp Infused Products

Commonly associated with marijuana, these anti-inflammatory and non-psychoactive ingredients are becoming a rapidly growing trend in the realm of skincare for their subversive nature. Elle raves about how CBD-infused lotions can help relax tired muscles and hemp oil is a fantastic moisturizer. Fun fact: The Body Shop has been using hemp in their products ever since 1992.

2. Algae Face Masks

We tend to associate algae with the green stuff growing in our aquariums or floating around in the ocean, but this natural ingredient is power-packed with a wide range of goodies for your skin. In our article ‘Stable Waterless Vitamin C That Soothes: Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream’, we describe how algae extract “conditions, hydrates, softens, refines texture and detoxifies the skin.” Isn’t this multi-tasking amazing?

3. Dry Brushing

Originating from ancient Chinese medical practices, dry brushing involves using a soft bristle brush across your entire body from the bottom to the top to get rid of dead skin cells. Parsley Health explains that dry brushing may have a surprise health benefit, in the fact that it simulates the lymphatic system. The idea behind dry brushing is that you’re brushing towards the heart, working with the body’s natural lymph flow while exfoliating dead skin. It’s the perfect stress-reducing addition to your routine before taking your bath or shower.

4. Probiotic Skin Care

Okay, putting bacteria on your face might sound weird at first, but as long as it’s the good kind it can actually repair your skin barrier. In fact, using harsh facial cleansers and antibacterial soap can lead to dryness and irritation, but Forbes suggests that probiotics function as a “protective shield against bad bacteria, dialing down inflammation, preventing premature aging in the skin” and even reducing acne.

5. AI Personal Customization

Would you trust a machine to make skincare recommendations for you? A brand called Proven may be your best bet yet. It was founded by a team from Stanford University and relies purely on algorithms and artificial intelligence, gathering and analyzing data related to “individual ingredient efficacy to consumer testimonials and scientific-journal reports” to deliver top-notch personalized skincare. After all, robots are getting smarter and so should we in terms of the decisions we make regarding our skin.

At the end of it all, skincare trends always come and go. Something to keep in mind before trying any skincare trend it’s that it is always important to do your own research and conduct a patch test to prevent any negative skin reactions, especially for those with sensitive skin or any allergies.

Stable Waterless Vitamin C that Soothes: Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream

November 18, 2019 · 12 Comments

Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream is a stable Vitamin C with a Who’s Who of skin-friendly supporting ingredients, including their own trademarked KB5 Complex. This complex is used instead of water or fillers. This creates a potently stable yet soothing C product. This innovative light cream hydrates like a concentrate but dries down clean and remarkably smooth.

Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream boasts an impressive array of natural, eye skin-enhancing ingredients

The Caveats of Vitamin C for Delicate Eye Skin Care

Crow’s feet, wrinkles, crepey skin and discoloration. Vitamin C can work wonders on the delicate eye area skin for targeted skin-rejuvenation. It is an anti-aging, dark pigmentation fading powerhouse. Vitamin C is a building block for collagen, the support structure of the skin. Vitamin C also minimizes wrinkles and improves sun-damaged skin texture.

But… Vitamin C can also irritate sensitive eye area skin. Many people cannot tolerate daily Vitamin C around the eyes.

Fortunately, Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream contains a host of soothing, nourishing, treating and buffering ingredients that support Vitamin C efficacy as well as make daily Vitamin C use possible even on the most sensitive eye skin. This formula uses STAY-C, a stable form of Vitamin C, activated only upon absorption. Stable C is more power with less irritation.

Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream reads like a who’s who list of amazing skin-friendly ingredients. Let’s take a closer look.

Ingredient Profile

In addition to STAY-C Vitamin C, Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream contains an impressive formulation of natural, skin-enhancing ingredients.

KB5 Complex: The first five herbs are individually cold-processed into essences. They create the proprietary KB5 Complex, a trademarked signature blend that replaces the water in all Kat Burke formulas. There are no unnecessary fillers such as water, silicone, and alcohol in any Kat Burke product. This makes highly concentrated and pure formulations.

INGREDIENT DETAILS

Nutrient-C Eye Cream features KB5 Complex instead of water. It is a combination of:

  • Arnica flower is a natural anti-inflammatory. It reduces puffiness without causing dryness or dehydration around the delicate eye skin. It also decreases bruising and inflammation. Arnica promotes healing and reduces swelling.
  • Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) improves elasticity and reduces sagging. It boosts antioxidant activity, strengthenings the skin and increases blood circulation. [1]
  • Calendula flower promotes the regeneration of new tissue and soothes damaged skin.
  • Lavender Oil softens and conditions the skin
  • Chamomile is an antioxidant with potent skin-soothing action. [2]

Nutrient-C Eye Cream also contains:

  • Safflower Oil is high in Omegas 3, 6 and 9. It hydrates dry skin, soothes irritation and enhances skin texture and appearance. It delays premature aging, tightens and brightens the skin.
  • Sunflower Seed Oil is hydrating, nourishing and an excellent supporting oil base. It retains moisture in the skin and is also rich in vitamin E.
  • Aloe Leaf Juice has an enzyme that repairs skin cells, soothes and heals the skin. It provides nourishment to the skin as it contains Vitamins A, C, Bs, and E as well as minerals and enzymes. This skin food heals, hydrates, and accelerates skin cell growth. It provides anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
  • Evening Primrose Oil restores a glow to the skin. It is excellent as a topical ingredient to provide moisture without clogging the skin and is helpful for eczema and acne. Supports elastin, moisture, and skin firmness. [3]
  • Jojoba Seed Oil is very similar to the composition of our natural skin oils, so skin tends to absorb Jojoba very well. Jojoba gives skin elasticity and softness. Jojoba Oil is a carrier oil, increasing the efficacy of other active ingredients. It smoothes wrinkles and fine lines without causing irritation.
  • Grape Seed Oil is nourishing to the skin and contains building blocks for collagen production. High in Polyphenols, Vitamins C, D, E and Omega 6, it treats dry skin, wrinkles, discoloration, and aging.
  • Neem Seed Oil is particularly effective on healing sun damage and restoring moisture. It deeply penetrates the skin to enhance elasticity, smooth wrinkles, and stimulate collagen production
  • Vitamin E to soften skin and make it more pliable.
  • Caffeine reduces puffiness and inflammation. Caffeine has antioxidant properties and slows down photoaging.
  • Maris Sal (OMC-92 Ocean Mineral Complex) is “An Ocean Mineral Complex of Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and a blend of 92+ nutritious ocean minerals to needed for proper skin cell function.” [4]
  • Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract and Lonicera Japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) Leaf Extract are anti-inflammatories suitable for highly sensitive skin
  • Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi) Extract comes from a mushroom with polysaccharides. These are responsible for the skin’s natural ability to hydrate and retain water. It promotes cell regeneration while reducing skin inflammation, puffiness, and wrinkles.
  • Juniper Fruit Extract has both soothing and antioxidant properties.
  • Rosemary Extract is soothing and helps reduce puffiness and lightens dark spots. It is stimulating and promotes better blood circulation.
  • Horsetail Plant Extract has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. It reduces redness and soothes skin.
  • Geranium Extract makes skin glow and heals inflammatory skin conditions and topical ingredient induced irritation.[5] It also contains a fatty acid profile that promotes healthy skin cells and reduce wrinkles [6].
  • Dandelion Extract stimulates collagen production. Packed with vitamins A, C, and E, it protects skin against free radical damage and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Magnesium and zinc detoxify skin, and anti-inflammatory properties calm irritation and under-eye puffiness.
  • Algae Extract is packed with skin essential vitamins and minerals. It conditions, hydrates, softens, refines texture and detoxifies the skin.

OUR EXPERIENCE

The lack of water or fillers is evident.  The texture sinks in immediately and has the impact of a high-end serum concentrate. There are no remaining dry patches and skin just DRINKS it in. The smallest dab of product fully hydrates and leaves skin exceptionally smooth.

This light cream with a natural lavender scent is quick to absorb and won’t cause makeup to run or pill. We find Nutrient-C Eye Cream works well under makeup or solo for a dewy-eyed, glowing skin look. Pair it with Kat Burki Absorption tool for a spa-like treat.

A tiny dot of this innovative cream absorbs quickly and leaves eye skin glowing,
fine wrinkles subdued and undereye skin soft and smooth.

Why BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner with Stable C is Special

November 15, 2019 · 14 Comments

Maybe you saw BeautyStat on Good Morning America, or read about it in Allure, Violet Grey, Coveuteur, or WWD. And now, on StyleChicks. Because here at StyleChicks we’ve tried plenty of high-end Vitamin C topicals. But our BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner experiences got and kept our attention. What happens after using a bottle of BeautyStat? We are here to tell our BeautyStat tales. First up is Lyn, her chief skin compliant is dark spots and hyperpigmentation due to sun damage.
BeautyStat Universal Skin Refiner contains a Stable Vitamin C for superior performance

BeautyStat Universal Skin Refiner contains a Stable Vitamin C for superior performance

Lyn here. I knew right away this product was unique. I was interested to see what one bottle could accomplish. BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner is a unique stable C that doesn’t oxidize. This Vitamin C is potent and fresh to the last drop. Often with a Vitamin C serum, you don’t really know if it is working by the end of the bottle and you have to invest in a second bottle and hope for the best. But with BeautyStat, I knew.

Me and Vitamin C

Skin-obsessed and well over 35, Vitamin C serum has been part of my daily routine for years. I didn’t have a particular preferred brand, some Vitamin Cs worked better than others. I was getting along well until … dark spots appeared. Lots of them.

Out, darn (age) spot! The backstory

Sunscreen fanatic here. But somehow, I got dark spots on the top of my cheekbone, where light hits. Visually it appears as one larger-than-an-inch birthmark-like patch atop each cheekbone. They are far darker and bigger than freckles and they are not cute like freckles. They show in photos and IRL even when I spackle concealer over them. The unfortunate placement is like a permanent contour where there ought to be highlighter. It alters the visual contours of my face and makes me look drawn and older.

The dark spots defied all my standard remedies. I tried niacinamide, retinol, at home dermabrasion, dermaplaning, Vitamin K, topical Alpha Lipoic Acid, and glycolic peels at home and at a spa.

Meanwhile, I had been using Vitamin C serums entire time. So I expected nothing to change dark spot-wise from using BeautyStat. I was wrong.

My beautystat Experience

Universal C Skin Refiner is aptly named. The morning after I first used it, I noticed a skin texture refinement. It was like after an AHA peel without the peeling, dryness, or irritation.

BeautyStat won’t pill under my sunscreen or makeup. It is not greasy, sticky, or tacky.

My sensitive skin tolerates daily BeautyStat use, even around the eye area.

I apply a thin layer on my face, throat, collarbone. Then go back in dabbing extra on my dark spots, acne scars and eleven lines.

Stable C is potent. I recommend sensitive skin users buffer with a moisturizer to tolerate daily use. BeautyStat makes one that I haven’t tried, so I can’t opine on it. I used a light lotion with no actives (Cerave or Clinique DDML). I experienced no dryness or flaking even with daily use.

Just a bit spreads evenly and smoothly on my face

Just a bit spreads evenly and smoothly on my face

Results

My face has overall spot fading and skin texture improvement. But most notable is the breakdown and reduction of the very dark pigment of the collective age spots patches. Now normal pigment skin appears between the spots so it is no longer a mega spot. The spots no longer obstruct my cheekbone. The discolored spots are visible in bright sunlight, but far less so in indoor lighting.

I don’t know how long it will take to remove the dark hyperpigmentation completely. But BeautyStat made more progress in a few weeks than I got in two years with any other dark spot treatment. Bravo!

Will another bottle of BeautyStat vanquish my dark spots for good? I sure am game to find out.

Want to know how BeautyStat pulls off this spot defeating beauty miracle? Watch for the rest of our BeautyStat series covering the science of BeautyStat and its fabulous ingredient profile, as well as Courtney’s impressive results.
