Flake Free Exfoliation with Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum | aHA Exfoliating Peel

January 22, 2020 · 12 Comments

UPDATE: This article is a product review of Mad Hippie aHA Exfoliating Peel that was formerly named Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum. Read our experience.

Exfoliation enables proper absorption of actives and removes dull, bacteria-trapping dead skin. Exfoliation can also irritate and leave skin dry and peeling.
Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum is an impressive exfoliative that doesn’t sting, irritate or burn, yet gently removes dead skin with ZERO itchy, red peeling. And it is packed with all kinds of goodness to improve skin texture and clarity while fading discoloration. Apply it at night, and wake up to smoother skin!
Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum

Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum is now called aHA Exfoliating Peel

About Exfoliating Sensitive Skin

Exfoliating sensitive skin is necessary but tricky.

Our three test subjects used Mad Hippie Exfoliative Serum for one week. All three experienced a major exfoliative impact with zero rubbing, scrubbing or skin irritation.

OF NOTE: Two of our three Style Chicks team testers have very sensitive skin. They cannot tolerate most traditional exfoliation scrubs or Glycolic peels higher than 10%. They had no problems with this serum.

Why Mad Hippie Exfoliative Serum works

While it is not irritating, it is powerful. Don’t layer it with other actives like Alpha Lipoic Acid, Retinol or Mad Hippie Triple C Night Cream. Plenty is going on already in this formulation, it contains 16 actives. There are aHAs, peptides, antioxidants and excellent buffers. Let’s take a look:

Ingredient Profile

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid (AHA) loosens the glue that adheres dry, dead skin to healthy skin, and then dissolves away the dead skin. It is a superior form of exfoliation for mature skin because there is no rubbing or pulling the skin. There is also little to no peeling and limited redness or irritation after use. Skin is brighter, younger, softer, with few lines and wrinkles, and it glows like younger skin. Glycolic Acid reduces acne scars. [1] Glycolic Acid also promotes collagen production.

Apple Stem Cells

Malus Domestica

Malus Domestica

Malus Domestica Fruit Cell Culture Extract is Apple Stem Cells. Malus Domestica is a Swiss Apple particularly suited for creating vegan-based stem cells. The stem cells build new tissue, delay aging and fight wrinkles.

Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate Acid)

Hyaluronic Acid retains moisture and increases the effectiveness of other ingredients.  Hyaluronic acid holds its weight in moisturizer. It holds so much moisture that it instantly plumps fine lines. This plumps the skin, making fine wrinkles and mild sagging temporarily disappear.

Sodium HA is a non-synthesized form of Hyaluronic Acid. It has Hyaluronic Acid benefits. It is a humectant and offers stronger moisture retention properties than regular HA. It is found naturally and ample supply in young skin, but depletes with age.

Sodium Hyaluronate Acid has a lower molecular size compared to other Hyaluronic Acids. This is good because it can absorb deeper into the skin.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid exfoliates and brightens skin. It is gentler than glycolic acid. Lactic acid holds moisture while increasing firmness and skin thickness.

Glycerin

Glycerin a non-toxic natural humectant. It helps skin attract and maintain moisture. It fills in gaps in dryer skin which makes skin look better and keeps the outer layer of the skin intact.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

Vitamin E softens skin texture. Vitamin E makes rough, sunburned, scarred or otherwise damaged skin soft and pliable. Once the skin is pliable, other treating ingredients can work their magic.

Matrixyl Synthe’ 6

A polypeptide concoction that stimulates the production of collagen I and IV. This peptide cocktail contains Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38. Palmitoyl tripeptide-38 is a vegan ingredient. It improves fine lines and wrinkles, most notably forehead lines and crow’s feet.

Matrixyl Synthe’ 6 is a notable inclusion in this serum, as it does the work of a heavy-duty nighttime serum.

Goji Berries

Goji Berry Extract

Goji berry (Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract) is an antioxidant that softens the skin. It is considered a superfruit.

Vitamin B5

(Panthenol) is a humectant that fosters skin healing. [2]

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a Vitamin B3 derivative. It combats sallowness, blotchiness and the hyperpigmented spots in aging skin. It addresses a loss of elasticity and reduces redness. It also fades acne scars and brightens the skin.

White Tea Extract (Camelia Sinensis)

White tea is gentle yet powerful. It has similar benefits to Green Tea with phenols and EGCG. As a topical ingredient, it evens the skin tone. It is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It reduces redness and inflammation around the delicate eye area. White tea also contains EGCG, which enables the production of new cells in the epidermis [3]. It contains phenols to strengthen collagen and elastin. This gives skin a bouncy, younger look while delaying wrinkles.

Caffeine

Caffeine stimulates blood circulation

Caffeine

Caffeine has antioxidant properties and slows down photo-aging. Caffeine stimulates blood circulation and reduces puffiness. It is particularly effective on firmness, reducing fine lines and crow’s feet.

Biotin

Biotin is Vitamin H, AKA B7. It is responsible for building blocks of protein and is involved in skin moisture levels.

Ceramide-3

Ceramide-3 is an excellent moisturizing ingredient. Ceramides are fatty acids that hold cells together to protect the epidermis. Ceramides create a protective barrier layer,  hold in moisture and plump the skin. Natural ceramides deplete with age. Even younger skin loses ceramides when using harsh cleansers or drying skincare products. Ceramide-3 keeps skin hydrated without being greasy.

Olives benefits the skin

Vegan squalene comes from olives

Squalene (Vegan)

Vegan squalene comes from olives. Squalene mimics the skin’s natural sebum and makes the skin barrier extra smooth and soft. Suitable for even highly sensitive or irritated skin. Helpful for acne.

Gigawhite

Gigawhite is a combination of natural herbs and flowering plants that promote skin brightening.

Specifically:

Mallow

Mallow Malva Sylvestris (mallow) Extract

Mallow is a natural floral extract. It contains Vitamins A, C and E. It nourishes dry and damaged skin, restoring elasticity. Mallow softens while being gentle enough for the most sensitive of skin.

Piperita Leaf Extract

Piperita Leaf Extract is a variety of Peppermint. It has both cooling and anesthetic properties to quell skin irritation.

It also soothes rough & dry skin.

Primula Veris Extract

Cowslip

Primula Veris Extract is an herb commonly known as cowslip. It has cell-regenerating effects that help skin recover from topical actives.

It contains C and beta carotene to even out skin tone and it reduces acne scars.

Alchemilla Vulgaris Extract

Alchemilla Vulgaris Extract comes from the Ladys mantle flower/herb. It is rich in tannins, flavonoids, and salicylic acid. Salicylic build collagen and treats acne.

StyleChicks defines Mad Hippie ingredients

Veronica Officinalis flower

Veronica Officinalis Extract

Veronica Officinalis Extract comes from a wildflower. It contains Vitamins C, E, and K to condition and heal the skin.

Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract

Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract is lemon balm leaf. It contains caffeine & ferulic acid. It counteracts sun damage.

Achillea Millefolium Extract
Yarrow ingredient definition on StyleChicks.com

Yarrow

Achillea Millefolium Extract is Yarrow. Yarrow is used in ancient and folk medicine practices. It reduces inflammation while promoting healing and circulation.

My Experience

Use half a dropper of serum on the face and throat. I tap it on around the eye area/orbital bone but keep it away from the eye. There is no stinging or burning. I wait about 10-15 minutes and apply moisturizer on top. No pilling.

Apply one half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

The Exfoliating Serum as seen in the Maddie Hippie Serum Combo. Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

In the morning, the skin seems evener. There is no dryness. Upon face washing, dead skin just gently melts off without rubbing and scrubbing. There is no telltale redness or peeling flakes. Skin is just soft and smooth.

It is gentle enough to use nightly, I use it every other night. I find it effective to alternate off this serum and Mad Hippie Triple C Night Cream.  Sensitive Skin users might try using Mad Hippie Exfoliative Serum 2 nights a week and the Vitamin C Serum daily.

The Benefits of Copper in Skincare: What To Know

January 21, 2020 · 12 Comments

This article explains the skincare and haircare benefits of copper.

Copper in Skincare: Does it Work?

Copper is one of the recent beauty buzzwords increasingly appearing within skincare. Skin care products with copper are generally on the pricer end of the spectrum. It all sounds promising, but what does research say about copper in skincare?

Copper is available in some foods, supplement form and topically within skin creams and serums.

How Copper Benefits Skin

Copper peptides promote collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production within the skin. All three are vital for skin firmness, texture, radiance, and appearance.
But all three of these components decrease with age. Elastin is especially difficult to replace. Few skin products build Elastin like copper.
Elastin is a necessary part of younger, resilient skin with less sagging. Elastin gives skin its youthful springy and bouncy quality. Elastin is crucial to achieve young-looking skin because it reduces sagging and wrinkles.

Copper peptides also remove damaged collagen. [1]

How Copper Benefits Hair

Copper is useful for hair growth. Copper is used in both hair supplements and topical scalp applications.

How does it work? Copper increases the size of shrunken hair follicles. It stops hair thinning and often reduces premature graying.

Why copper products are expensive

The copper extraction process is costly and produces little skincare-quality copper.

A product requires a certain amount of copper to make a meaningful difference. It won’t be the first listing of the ingredient list, but it can’t be effective if it is the last ingredient of a long list.

How to Get the Most Benefit from Copper Skincare Products

For best results, Copper should be paired with supporting ingredients. These include Peptides, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and retinoids. [2]

Recommended Products

Some products featuring copper which we find effective include:

Osmotics Cosmeceuticals Blue Copper 5 line features copper in both their skin care and hair care range. We love the attention Osmotics gives to copper-supporting ingredients like Vitamin C and other key ingredients to get the most bang for your beauty buck.

When it comes to proper copper delivery for beauty benefits, Osmotics Cosmeceuticals is the real deal.

Osmotics Firming Eye Complex contains Blue Copper 5, a potent copper peptide to firm eye skin

Farmaesthetics Watercress Eye Gel contains Watercress. Watercress is an antioxidant containing Copper. [3] Watercress Eye Gel is an exceptionally gentle yet highly effective eye serum with quality, natural ingredients.

Naturally Copper-rich Ingredients

Konjac Root contains copper amongst its’ many nutrients, as well as Vitamin C. Since copper works so well with C, Konjac Root is a great active ingredient in skincare. Meanwhile, it holds water in skin.

One Konjac Root product we love is Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum, it contains all the actives that work well with copper.

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum contains copper rich Konjac Root.

Why Love BEAUTYSTAT UNIVERSAL PRO-BIO MOISTURE BOOST CREAM

January 13, 2020 · 9 Comments

2025 Update: BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream has new packaging but the formula ingredients and experience remain the same. Read our review and ingredient deep-dive

We recently experienced BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner, a patented Stable C cream.  The other half of the BeautyStat dynamic duo is the BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream.

what are BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream Benefits?

It hydrates, buffers and boosts Vitamin C tolerance.
Buffering actives is mandatory for sensitive skin types.
But we find BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream stands on its’ own beauty merit with a host of skin-enhancing ingredients.

BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream

BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream

It’s Not Easy Being The Moisturizing SideKick

The moisturizer product of many treating topical/moisturizer duos is typically the Robin, who pales in comparison to the superhero Batman product. Robin is a perfectly respectable sidekick that does his part. But you’re primarily interested in Batman. You just wouldn’t watch Robin alone.

But know this:  BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream is no Robin the sidekick within this dynamic duo. This cream stands on its’ own merit with a host of skin-enhancing ingredients, each with their own superpowers.

So, let’s just skip to the good stuff and examine why this cream merits your attention: the ingredients.

Ingredients in BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream

Pomegranate Sterol

Pomegranate Sterols is a safe, natural pomegranate based skincare ingredient. Those juicy, jewel-like seeds are arils.

What are Pomegranate skincare benefits?

  • Arils are packed with antioxidants, minerals, vitamins A, C, K, and E plus folic acid.
  • Pomegranates contain three times the antioxidants of wine or green tea. [1]
  • Pomegranate Sterol is made by extracting the arils juice.  It increases skin barrier formation and improves skin hydration.  Testing shows Pomegranate Sterols holds double its’ weight in water.
  • Also, it packs an amazing collagen-building punch.

How Pomegranate Benefits Skin on StyleChicks

Pomegranate promotes collagen production and skin hydration

Ceramide-2

Ceramide-2 is one of the ceramides that hold the lipid barrier which protects the skin. We are born with enough ceramides but lose them with age or sometimes with overly harsh facial washing. Ceramide-2 is used for its’ ability to moisturize and hold moisture in the skin.

GANODERMA LUCIDUM EXTRACT

Ganoderma Lucidum or Reishi mushrooms

Ganoderma is also called Asian Mushroom Extract, reishi or lingzhi. This mushroom has been used for centuries in traditional medicinal practice and is known as “mushroom of immortality”. Ganoderma Lucidum Extract comes from a mushroom with polysaccharides. These are responsible for the skin’s natural ability to hydrate and retain water. It promotes cell regeneration while reducing skin inflammation, puffiness, and wrinkles.

Bifida Extract

Bifida Extract or Bifida Ferment Lysate is a probiotic in the kombucha family. It reduces skin sensitivity and kick starts the skin into healing itself. [2] It is an important ingredient in the BeautyStat duo because it enables more sensitive skin to tolerate the potential irritation of transformative topicals, like Vitamin C.

White Birch Bark Ingredients on StyleChicks.com

White Birch Bark

BETULA ALBA BARK EXTRACT

Betula Alba Bark Extract comes from the White Birch tree. It contains vitamins B1, B2, A, C, and E. It is known for skin healing, conditioning, and anti-inflammatory properties. Research indicates that that birch bark extract can improve the skin barrier, increase skin hydration and reduce trans-epidermal water loss [3].

Also

Glycerin a non-toxic natural humectant and hydrator that helps skin attract and maintain moisture.

Olives benefits the skin

Cetearyl olivate is an emulsifier. It is a natural and safe alternative to PEG. It is made of a “good alcohol” and olive fatty acids.

Olives give Cetearyl olivate hydrating superpowers. The olive fatty acids give deep hydration, smooth skin and give the product a silky texture.

The BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream Experience

  • It is a gel-like cream that absorbs quickly without being greasy.
  • Vitamin C serum, makeup and sunscreen don’t pill on top.
  • No chalky residue.
  • Takes a minute to dry down, but it dries down smooth and leaves skin soft.

We love that it is fragrance-free, just a dab goes a long way, and it complements and supports the BeautyStat Universal C.

BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream stands on its's own as a skin-enhancing treatment AND buffers and supports the Vitamin C Cream

BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream stands on its’s own as a skin-enhancing treatment AND buffers and supports the Vitamin C Cream

Experiment

With several ingredients that boost the skin’s ability to tolerate and buffer a potentially drying active like Vitamin C, this moisturizer is a real find for those with sensitive skin.

Would this cream protect my skin if I overapplied topicals with potent actives?  I had to over-apply Vitamin C and find out.

So I slathered my face with BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner.

I slathered the under eyes, throat, near my mouth, under the nostrils, all those sensitive areas in a deliberate attempt to see if I COULD get irritated with the BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream on top.

Then I applied the Boost Cream.

At first, I felt a bit tight but there was no redness no peeling or dryness, and skin looked really good the next day with no hint of my overzealous application.

I typically apply Vitamin C gingerly, but with the BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream, I’ve applied more generously. That really helps treat problematic areas.

Results

We find this cream to also be highly useful with other actives such as Retin-A, Alpha Lipoic Acid, or post AHA peels. If you find your skin too sensitive to tolerate these or other actives, this boost cream could change the game for your skin.

Best use tip: We even suggest using the Boost cream a few days BEFORE starting the active topical to get it in optimal shape and hydration to maximize your chances of successfully tolerating Vitamin C or other creams.
