Madame Gabriela Lipstick Clean Beauty Luxury What to Know

March 24, 2020 · 18 Comments

REVIEW Madame Gabriela Beauty lipstick: a clean beauty cosmetic with a luxury vibe. Read our experience and a full report on the ingredients in this lipstick.

Many of us seek clean skincare and eat healthily. But do we still slather our lips with chemical-laden lipstick? Probably because many “clean” lipsticks leave much to be desired in texture, color choice, and packaging. So we are pleased to introduce a brand that caters to our desire for a luxe lipstick with clean ingredients. This brand is Madame Gabriela Beauty. It has an exceptionally smooth finish held in a sleek and chic lipstick case.

Madame Gabriela Clean Luxury Lipsticks

Brand Overview: Madame Gabriela Beauty

Madame Gabriela Beauty is a clean-cosmetic lipstick with ingredients typically found in skincare or a luxe lip treatment.  It is an ingredient-driven lipstick that has a luxury lipstick look, texture and feel.

There is much to say about this lipstick range: the experience, the shades, the wear, and our a full ingredient profile. These lipsticks are truly 100% clean.*

The Madame Gabriela Lipstick Experience

I love natural lipstick but I am frequently disappointed with shade selection and texture.

Many clean and natural lip cosmetics are, in our opinion, overly brown or yellow-based hues. These muted shades are lovely on redheads and warmer skin tones, but they don’t work as well with fairer or pink-based undertones. At least not for us.

Natural ingredient lipsticks also tend to be very waxy and dry or overly soft and runny.  I require high performance and definition.

So we were delighted to discover Madame Gabriela Beauty has mastered high performance, clean lippies in cooler tones with impressive color payout.

And these lipsticks have such a smooth, silky finish.

We were particularly impressed that Madame Gabriela Beauty lipsticks use ONLY ingredients that are clean and safe but are cleverly formulated so that there are no compromises in quality. The texture is excellent.

They are not waxy or watery. They have good wear time and don’t make my lips look or feel dry. There is no compromise to achieve a clean beauty lip product.

The Madame Gabriela Shades and Swatches

There are currently three Madame Gabriela lipstick shades:

  • New York at 1 PM a bright cheery pink
  • Paris at 7 PM is a classic true red pigment
  • Sydney at 8 AM a lightweight nude

Madame Gabriela Lipstick Sydney at 8 AM

Madame Gabriela Sydney at 8 AM is a pink undertone nude suited to pale to medium-dark skin tones. Just warm enough without being too dark or orange, yet not too gray or beige.

It does not oxidize into a brown or bleached out foundation tint look after a few hours of wear.

Madame Gabriela Lipstick New York at 1 PM

Madame Gabriela New York at 1 PM is a cheery blue base pink.

A classic wearable pink is hard to find. I am always attracted to pink lipsticks, but rarely find the shade I like on my lips.

This shade has color payout without appearing too garish. It is not Shocking Schiaparelli pink, but it is not ballerina bare or teenage bubble gum either. Polished and glam like its’ namesake. Madame Gabriela New York at 1 PM is a bright cheery pink perfect for spring and summer.

Madame Gabriela Lipstick Ingredient Guide

Take look at this impressive formulation of Madame Gabriela Beauty’s Ingredient Driven Lipstick:

What is in Madame Gabriela Lipstick? Ingredient Analysis

Manuka Honey

Organic Manuka honey holds minor natural lip plumping abilities.

Manuka Honey in Madame Gabriela Beauty lipstick

A softening humectant, Manuka Honey has healing, protecting and hydrating properties. It fights free radicals and is an anti-aging, boosting collagen production and cellular regeneration.

Manuka Honey works best when combined with hydration. Manuka Honey has natural antibacterial and antiviral properties to heal skin conditions.

Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil*

Organic Avocado Oil is 72% monounsaturated fatty acids. This is higher than Coconut or Grapeseed oils. Avocado Oil mixes with water better than other oils.

Avocado oil decreases dryness and improves skin texture. Rich in Omegas 3 and 6, Vitamins C,D, and E, Avocado Oil promotes scar healing and collagen production.[1]

Few oils can soften and reduce the appearance of vertical lip wrinkles like Avocado can. It gives this lipstick a smoother application and finish.

Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil

Sesame Seed Oil softens the skin. Rich in linoleic acid, vitamins A an E, it rids the skin of dry flakes. Sesame Oil is ideal for sensitive, irritated lip skin.

Sesame Seed Oil has a very thick and rich texture. It absorbs exceptionally well and seeps into the skin, making it soft and silky.

Cocoa Seed

Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter*

Cocoa Seed Butter contains a significant amount of polyphenol and flavonoid antioxidants. It prevents peeling lip skin and keeps lip skin elastic.

Matricaria Recutita (Chamomile) Flowers*

Chamomile is a gentle antioxidant with potent skin-soothing action. [2]

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*

Organic Castor Oil is a humectant. It draws moisture into the skin, hydrating while serving as a subtle lip plumper.

It softens skin with its’ high Vitamin E content.

Castor Oil is typically too thick and sticky to apply directly to the lips, but in this lipstick formulation, it works effectively with no residue or unpleasant scent.

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*

Organic Sunflower Seed Oil Sunflower is hydrating, nourishing and an excellent “supporting” oil base.

It retains moisture in the skin and is rich in vitamin E.

The Linoleic acid gives sunflower seed oil anti-inflammatory properties, provides a lipid barrier and is a natural treatment for atopic dermatitis. [3]

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*

Organic Shea Butter can feed the skin and overhaul the skin texture, even on deep burns or dry, cracked lips.

Brassica Campestris/Aleurites Fordi Oil Copolymer

Brassica Campestris is an emollient antioxidant that is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

A combination of two natural oils that provide a soft and smooth finish and help form a “film” for product staying power.

Bambusa Arundinacea (Bamboo) Stem Extract

Bamboo Stem Extract has flavones, a source of natural antioxidants. Since the skin on lips is a major target of oxidative stress, the antioxidant protection provided by bamboo extract is excellent within this formulation.[4]

Bamboo extract contains glycosides, phenolic acids, and amino acids. These hold skin nourishing and soothing properties.

Bamboo extract is also hydrating, supporting other ingredients like Manuka Honey.[5, 6]

Thyme in bloom

Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Leaf*

Thyme has skin protective properties, including some UVA and UVB protection.

High in anti-oxidants it is a skin anti-ager.

Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf*

Madame Gabriela lipstick has Rosemary

Rosemary

Rosemary combats dry skin. It naturally protects skin from sun damage and free radicals.

It also has natural antiseptic properties and is a gentle exfoliant for dead skin flakes to keep lips smooth.

Rosemary Extract is soothing and helps reduce puffiness and lightens dark spots. It is stimulating and promotes better blood circulation to deliver the nutrients necessary to build collagen, elastin and to encourage scar repair.

Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flowers

Ylang Ylang softens and smoothes skin and stimulates new cell growth.

It soothes inflammation and irritation due to skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. [7]

Tocopherol

Tocopherol is a form of Vitamin E derived from vegetable oils.

It is a moisturizing and skin softening antioxidant.

Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Peel Oil*

Citrus Aurantium Bergamia is better known as Bergamot. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Linalool and carvacrol are compounds in bergamot oil. Both are excellent anti-inflammatories for dry, chapped lips.[8]

Citrus Sinensis (Orange) Essential Oil*

Organic Orange Oil is an antioxidant that reduces inflammation. It improves collagen production resulting in the reduction of dark spots and wrinkles.

Collagen production is especially important on lips that quickly show age and deflate with time.

Madame Gabriela Lipstick ingredient analysis

*Certified Organic Ingredients

No junky fillers
Preservatives and thickeners can be tricky. This formula contains safe and good natural stuff  to create the texture we associate with a luxury lipstick.

Shorea Robusta Resin

Shorea Robusta Resin is extracted from the sal tree of the Indian subcontinent. It improves long-lasting and film-forming properties and is especially popular in color cosmetic products. Gives a luxe viscosity.

Ascorbyl Palmitate

A fat-soluble vitamin C that serves as an antioxidant used in cosmetic preparations and as a food additive.

Rhus Verniciflua Peel Cera/Rhus Succedanea Fruit Cera

Wax made from the mesopeel of the berries of the Japanese wax tree

Helianthus Annuus Seed Cera

Helianthus Annus Seed Cera is the wax obtained from the seed of the Sunflower. An emollient.

Zea Mays

Organic Corn Starch, a largely translucent natural powder used to give a silky feel or smooth texture to a creamy skin or cosmetic product.

Polyglyceryl-2 Oleate

A non-toxic, plant-based emulsifier. Polyglyceryl 4 Oleate is an ester of the fatty oleic acid and polyglycerin-4. It has glycerin-like qualities from palm and coconut oil. It works with both water and oil-based ingredients to hold a formula together. A safe and gentle alternative to PEG.

Polyhydroxystearic Acid

Polyhydroxystearic Acid is an emulsifier that stabilizes products. Often found in natural sunscreens.

Polyglyceryl-2 Stearate

A natural plant-based ester with glycerine qualities. It keeps a product moist.

Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax

Candelilla Wax is a vegan substitute for beeswax with similar properties. It works well with other waxes for improved product consistency and to raise melting points without chemicals.

Vanilla Planifolia

Natural Vanilla Bean Flavor from the vanilla orchid accounts for the slight delicious scent.

Science of Skincare: The GroundBreaking Collagen & Skin Elasticity Study For Ninja Level Anti-Aging

February 26, 2020 · 2 Comments

Amongst the countless skincare products and procedures out there, what REALLY restores collagen? A recent study revealed facts that may alter what products you use in the fight against dull, aging skin.

The Collagen Conundrum

There are many collagen types in our body. Each collagen type has a function. Effective anti-aging skincare is not just restoring some form of collagen on areas of visible aging. It requires producing the right kind of collagen in the right place. This gives skin resilience and elasticity. Tricky, right?

We knew the deeper the skin can be stimulated to produce new collagen, the less facial sagging there will be.  That’s still true, but now there is more intel.

The Super Science-y Skin Study

A groundbreaking skin study revealed the composition of live young and aging skin.  It looked at the baby collagen in the skin. It noted the changes in elasticity with age in the twenties, thirties, and forties.

Special technology imaged the internal elasticity of the skin. It noted the concentration of the individual collagen fibers. They located which ones made skin elastic, taut and youthful. The location and impact of these concentrated collagen clusters were new information.

“The team also studied how the variations in skin elasticity in the papillary dermis would change the look of the skin and discovered that the skin surface of females without any signs of variations in elasticity was more likely to be smooth, whereas that of females with decreased elasticity looked slightly rough” [1]

The Result

The result? Now we know exactly WHERE we need to restore collagen. And we know which type of collagen rejuvenates skin and keeps it “springy”

“The team has found out that type III collagen is abundant in the areas with healthy skin elasticity in the uppermost layer of the dermis, but it decreases in the parts where the skin elasticity has deteriorated. This suggests that the decrease in type III collagen triggers the decrease in skin elasticity” [2]

In sum: what makes skin healthy, elastic and vibrant is collagen III within the dermal cells of the papillary dermis skin layer.

And the study identified the exact ingredient to accomplish the task. It is an ingredient that appears in skincare brands like Shiseido and Tatcha. It is also a natural ingredient that can be organically farmed. It’s Watercress. Yep, Watercress.

Watercress helps makes Type Collagen III in dermal cells

Watercress helps makes Type Collagen III in dermal cells

what to do About It

Henceforth, beauty buddies, we tackle anti-aging with the precision of a vapid ninja.

We‘re featuring select products using Watercress to best advantage to precisely target Collagen III production in the proper dermal cells.

And there are some great skin products in this lineup, including an all-natural Beauty Superfood oil with a Watercress base.

ROIL custom-crafted formulas are organically farmed, paraben-free, and cruelty-free.

The ROIL experience

This rich, thick cream absorbs quickly without leaving any oily residue. Massaging in one or two pumps worth of cream covers a surprising amount of skin.

Skin is nourished, soft and looks younger with a healthy, hydrated glow. Even skin on areas like elbows looks younger, not just softer.

A lovely Valencia orange scent that I personally enjoy as the lightest of fragrance. Once it dries down, one has the lean in to detect the lingering notes of orange and grapefruit. I prefer unscented lotions but this is my exception. Subtle enough for even wearing at the office.

Private Collection Body Lotion leaves my skin soft and supple AND rejuvenates my skin with organically farmed ingredients. We love that it has generous levels of nutrient rich ingredients that together treat, promote and save collagen, and restore body skin.

Vitamin C serum is a holy grail product when it comes to tackling whatever skincare problem ails you. It treats sun damage, acne, acne scars, discoloration, age spots, fine lines, skin texture, and enlarged pores all while promoting collagen production. But even Vitamin C needs a little help from its’ friends.

In the case of Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum, those friends come in the form of some skin-friendly actives that are packed with skin-nourishing vitamins, hydration, lipids, fatty acids and other goodies that keep skin acting younger and looking vibrant.

Every active in this formulation has a corresponding buddy ingredient. Each active has an improved mechanism because of their buddy.
Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum featured on www.stylechicks.com

A solid formulation where all the ingredients support each other

When Actives Are BFFs

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum has active ingredients that work together. Some examples:

Konjac + Hyaluronic Acid

The Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac Acid combination do something special.

Both Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac have high hygroscopic properties. They pull moisture from the air. The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus the glucomannan in konjac maximize their combined water absorption capacity. Once they absorb into the skin, they link. They attract water and swell in the skin. I mean, really, really swell with water. All the can get. So much water. It gives the skin a nice plump look while simultaneously treating.

The Three Amigos

Ferulic, C, and E are all anti-aging antioxidants. Awesome individually, but together they are special. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology:

“Ferulic acid alone (and vitamins C and E) provide partial protection but vitamins C, E and ferulic acid [altogether] provide virtually complete protection.” [1]

The Vitamin C is part of a Serum Duo with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum but also available as a stand-alone product.  The Mad Hippie Serum Duo has an astounding number of actives between them, yet don’t irritate the skin.

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and Exfoliating Serum Duo

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and Exfoliating Serum Duo

Let’s examine these active ingredients in detail.

✽

Active Ingredient Profile

Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate)

A water-soluble C particularly effective on acne treatment and prevention. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is a stable precursor of vitamin C that ensures a constant delivery of vitamin C into the skin. [2] In layperson terms, it won’t turn brown or go bad. SAP has a strong antimicrobial effect.

Konjac Root

This unusual looking specimen seen below is Konjac Root. It contains glucomannan, a moisturizer similar to the natural hyaluronic found in young skin. It makes skin look and act younger.  It penetrates the upper layer of the epidermis and hydrates the surface.

Konjac root also contains a slew of skin-friendly vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, plus lipids and fatty acids. It smooths fine wrinkles and promotes collagen and elastin production.

Konjac also contains copper, a skincare superstar that builds collagen and the elusive but skin-vital elastin. Elastin is crucial because it reduces sagging and wrinkles and gives skin a springy and healthy look. Copper is rare and pricey skincare, which makes its’ presence in this formula all the more awesome. Copper also plays very well with the other actives in this formula. [3]

Konjac Root

ferulic acid

Ferulic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid) is naturally found in plant cell walls. Ferulic acid makes Vitamin C more stable, and is also an anti-oxidant. Ferulic acid is particularly good at protecting against aging caused by free radicals and environmental stress factors.

Hyaluronic acid

In addition to the humectant and plumping properties described above, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a microcarrier. Like a friend with VIP access, it helps active molecules penetrate deeper into the skin for better results.

HA assists all the actives and is particularly good at the dermal delivery of sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP).

Vitamin E

A protective antioxidant that lessens discoloration.  E makes damaged skin soft and pliable again while reducing wrinkle and fine line formation.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage

Clary sage strengthens the skin while balancing excess sebum. It calms and rejuvenates the skin in a manner similar to lavender but without as strong of a scent.

It contains linalyl acetate, an anti-inflammatory that heals skin irritation.[4]

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile flower

Chamomile flower

Chamomile Extract is excellent in a formulation with powerful actives because it contains flavones. These flavones inhibit the production of inflammation, even in deeper skin layers. [5]

Meanwhile, The apigenin in Chamomile protects the skin barrier. [6] This gentle and hypoallergenic extract soothes skin, heals burns, and is great for helping skin recover and benefit from chemical peels.

Chamomile Extract is an antioxidant that also kills the bacteria that causes acne while soothing skin. [7]

The chamomile helps enable the daily use of this serum without irritation or skin peeling.

What We Love About It

This is a particularly impressive C serum. As a stable C, it is good to the last drop: no degrading or turning brown.

The ingredient combo is exceptionally effective and hits all the bases.  Skin appears refined after use without redness or tightness. There is no peeling skin or dryness. It is powerful but there is no need to skip a day due to irritation.

Unlike many C serums, it is not sticky or tacky on dry down. It doesn’t pill or get crusty under my sunscreen and makeup.✽class=”toc_list”

The Vitamin C is part of a Serum Duo with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum but also available as a stand-alone product.  Read about Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum ingredients and our experience here.

How to Use This Serum

After cleansing, apply just a half a dropper full daily to the face and throat. Follow with a moisturizer so the hyaluronic and Konjac acids can work their moisture-binding, skin-plumping, hygroscopic magic.

Apply twice a day if this is your only serum, or once a day if using the MH Exfoliative Serum or another nighttime favorite.

Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

RESULTS

The impact of Konjac and C together is so impressive: dark spots fade fairly quickly. Paired with the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum at night, this duo makes for an impressive one-two punch against aging and skin issues like discoloration, acne, fine lines, and skin texture. And it does it with zero irritation.

If skin aging, poor texture, acne or sun damage make you want to apply ALL the things, this C Serum and the serum duo contain many excellent actives in the right combination and proportions to get the job done without causing any irritation.

WHERE TO FIND IT

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum is available at Mad Hippie as part of a serum combo or separately at Mad Hippie and Ulta, and also Whole Foods stores

Apply one half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

The Mad Hippie Serum Duo has an astounding number of actives between them, yet don’t irritate the skin.
