How to Best Use Watercress for Skincare Benefits?

August 22, 2022 · Leave a Comment

WATERCRESS INGREDIENT GUIDE: Watercress works wonders. Read a short synopsis of the science behind how it encourages collagen and elastin production for younger, firmer skin
Watercress supports collagen and elastin within the skin

Watercress supports collagen and elastin within the skin

The Role of Collagen and Elastin

We obsess about Collagen in our skincare regimens, and rightly so.

Collagen is the scaffold of our skin, keeping it firm and wrinkle-free. Skin with more collagen has smaller pores and fewer wrinkles.

But our skin can be devoid of these tell-tale signs of aging yet still not look YOUNG.

  • Elastin is as important as collagen for the appearance of younger skin because it keeps skin resilient.
  • We lose elastin as we age and from sun damage.
  • Elastin can be replaced in the skin, but fewer products address the loss of skin elastin.

What is the secret of youthful skin? Collagen AND Elastin.

How do you increase both Collagen and Elastin in your skin? By slathering Watercress all over it.

Watercress boosts collagen and elastin

Nasturtium Officinale boosts collagen and elastin

The Science of Watercress

Watercress, also known as Nasturtium Officinale, is a tiny plant with big beauty benefits.

A groundbreaking skincare study showed Watercress uniquely promotes Collagen III in the dermal cells of the papillary dermis skin layer. [1] Collagen III is known as “baby collagen” – it is the type we lose as we age.

Nasturtium Officinale also builds Elastin.

Elastin gives skin its’ youthful bounce.

The same study found that the more elastin skin has, the smoother skin looks. But as skin loses elastin, it becomes dull and rough.

Enhanced collagen levels ALSO increase skin elasticity. And together, they make skin taut, resilient, and radiant.

It also is an antioxidant full Vitamins A, C, E, K, and notably, Copper. [2]

Watercress boosts collagen and elastin

Nasturtium Officinale promotes Collagen III – the type of collagen we lose as we age.

What are Watercress Skincare Benefits?

Watercress contains Copper which has an amazing ability to restore skin elastin

Elastin gives skin its’ youthful bounce and the ability to spring back.  Few ingredients support elastin as copper does.

Copper peptides promote collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production within the skin. All three are vital for skin firmness, texture, radiance, and appearance.

Copper extraction is costly, which often makes it costly in skincare products. Watercress is an excellent way to get topical copper in your skincare program.

Read more about how copper benefits the skin here.

Watercress Contains Vitamin K to erase dark circles

The Vitamin K in Nasturtium Officinale reduces brown and blue-tinged under-eye dark circles caused by leaking capillaries.

As we age, we tend to get more broken capillaries, resulting in red and brown heme pooled under the skin. Vitamin K strengthens these capillaries so they are more resistant to breakage.

Watercress also contains Vitamins A and C to fight free radicals.

Featured Products Containing Watercress

We love Watercress in an eye treatment!

It is found in skin-savvy beauty brands such as SK-II.

This Farmaesthetics Watercress Eye Gel contains Watercress and certified organic herbs, flowers, and oils from American family farms. An ideal combo to restore, revitalize and refresh. Plus it comes in this charming cobalt bottle.

We love using products with watercress on the delicate eye area skin

MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY How to Best Use

August 20, 2022 · 11 Comments

UPDATED JUNE 2025: Review + Best Use Guide MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + Spray is a popular beauty favorite.

How do you use MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + Spray? Does it meet the hype? What it is and how to use it.

MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + spray

MAC COSMETICS Prep + Prime Fix + micro-mists green tea, cucumber & vitamins onto skin for soothing hydration to foundation and skin.

What is MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY?

MAC says the MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + is “a lightweight water mist that gently soothes and refreshes skin and finishes makeup.”

It contains vitamins and minerals, green tea, chamomile, and cucumber to soothe and refresh the skin.

WHY USE MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY?

Harsh forced heat and air conditioning within many apartments and office buildings can make skin dry and makeup crack.

If you live in a cold climate, makeup can dry out and crack. Makeup can melt in a hot one. Forced indoor heat pulls moisture out of foundation, leaving a dry, unnatural looking look. Can a makeup setting spray help? And how do you find the right one for your skin type?

We’ve tried out a few setting sprays lately, and have come to love MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + to make our foundation stay put while our skin looks dewy, supple and hydrated.

What are the MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY Benefits?

  • Makeup is refreshed, but there is not a glittery glow or weird wet, slippery look.
  • It absorbs quickly to give an instant boost of hydration while delivering a soft sheen to refresh and finish makeup.
  • Existing makeup is not disturbed by the micro-spray mist.

Additionally, MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ is Ophthalmologist tested and Non-acnegenic.

MAC Prep + Prime Fix + Keeps Makeup Fresh All Day

When I use MAC Prep + Prime Fix + to set my foundation in the morning, I do not need to reapply foundation during the day (except for touching up with YSL Touche Eclat for some brightening, more to look awake under harsh gray lights than reapplying for coverage).

Dabbing Prep + Prime Fix + with a Beauty Blender mid-day or before going out after work is also a way to refresh concealer and any foundation that has settled into fine lines around the mouth or folds of the nose.

DRY & SENSITIVE SKIN Benefits

If your skin is sensitive or dry, it helps keep the foundation moist.

Sensitive skin will like the soothing cucumber and green tea to keep redness and irritation at bay during the day.

Dry and delicate skins will also appreciate that this setting spray does not sting like those that contain alcohol.

OILY SKIN Benefits

If you have oily skin, MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + keeps the color of your foundation color true so that it does not get darker during the day, but some oily skin gals report that the spray does not help set their foundation and they still need a mid-day foundation re-touch.

If you have oily skin, you may prefer one of the Urban Decay setting sprays or Tatcha Luminous Skin Dewy Mist

HOW TO Best USE MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY

  1. I shake the bottle.
  2. Hold the bottle about 12 inches away from your face.
  3. Mist the face after doing foundation or foundation and powder as the last step before mascara and liner.
  4. If my face is exceptionally dry, I mist my face once before foundation application as well.
  5. During the day, I spray it again on before any concealer or foundation touch-ups and dab with a beauty blender to smooth out any caking or creasing.
MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + comes in a smaller purse size bottle as well.

My makeup stays dewy even in cold, harsh weather or in a very dry office environment.

MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY FAQ

Does MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY cause acne?

No. MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY is non-acnegenic.

I was surprised to see how many acne-causing ingredients appear in some well-known brand sprays.

Is MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY sticky?

No it is not sticky. It also leaves skin feeling smooth.

There are a few setting sprays that leave more of a light hairspray type of tacky stickiness on the skin, that I do not like.

WHY not just use a water spray or wet sponge?

These tactics can work, but I find it does not help the makeup stay fresh in the first place, it only helps blend out creasing makeup before applying more makeup.

This may seem like one of those makeup products that you don’t need because a damp sponge can rehydrate dried out makeup. That is only one of the MAC COSMETICS PREP+ PRIME+FIX benefits.

What is the MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + SPRAY scent?

I also like that it smells only of the green tea and cucumber. There are no overpowering scents. I smell nothing once it dries down.

My makeup doesn’t crack or crease during the day. Any touchups are minimal, even on long days.

MAC COSMETICS Prep + Prime Fix + micro-mists green tea, cucumber & vitamins onto skin for soothing hydration to foundation and skin.

MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + spray

WHERE TO FIND MAC PREP + PRIME FIX + Spray

MAC Prep+ Prime Fix+ is $24 for the 3.4-ounce size and $12 for the purse size.

Right now, three limited edition versions are also available: a lavender, a rose, and coconut scented Prep+ Prime Fix+ sprays.

Find MAC COSMETICS PREP+ PRIME+FIX at MacCosmetics.com, Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Ulta

Jeffrey James Botanicals THE Serum is one of our favorite products: we always keep a spare so we never run out.

About JEFFREY JAMES BOTANICALS

Jeffrey James Botanicals is a luxury organic line that uses amazing ingredients for face and body skincare. These products truly deliver.

Jeffrey James Botanicals focuses on quality ingredients that hydrate skin.

Founder Jeffrey James was ahead of his time in producing clean beauty skincare that works. Packed with gentle yet effective natural ingredients, each formulation is masterfully balanced.

Let’s take a closer look at Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum’s stellar formulation:

Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum Key Ingredients

Aloe Vera plant nourishes and soothes skin

Organic Aloe Vera provides a nourishing, non-irritating base for the actives in this formulation

Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf

Aloe Vera

Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf is Aloe Vera.

Aloe Vera  feeds the skin with essential nutrients and makes skin smooth, hydrated, and soft.

It provides nourishment to the skin as it contains Vitamins A, C, Bs, and E as well as minerals and enzymes. This skin food heals, hydrates, and accelerates skin cell growth.

Aloe Vera has an enzyme that repairs skin cells. Aloe Vera soothes minor burns, scrapes, and heals the skin.

It provides anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide

A botanical hyaluronic acid from the seed of the Cassia angustifolium plant.

High in anti-oxidants and moisturizing.

Its’ flavonoid compounds help defend skin’s surface against damage from environmental pollutants.[1,2]

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is a non-synthesized form of Hyaluronic Acid. It is a humectant that offers stronger moisture retention properties than regular HA.   It is found naturally and in ample supply in young skin, but depletes with age.

Sodium Hyaluronate has a lower molecular size than to other Hyaluronic Acids, so can penetrate deeper into the skin and bring other actives along with it.

The Sodium Hyaluronate in this formulation is vegan.

Lavender Oil softens hair and skin

Lavender

Lavandula Angustifolia

Lavender Flower Water softens and conditions the skin.

Lavender’s anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties keep skin healthy. It has soothing properties to calm any imbalances such as inflammation or dry skin flaking.

The linalyl acetate in lavender enhances cell growth in the skin.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a sulfur compound trace and trace mineral found naturally in the body.  MSM is also a natural sulfur found in some plants, nuts and cruciferous vegetables. It supports healthy tissue development including skin.

MSM applied topically brightens the skin while moisturizing. MSM is excellent with Vitamin C because it enhances the production of “collagen bundles” that prevent skin sagging.

Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel

Hamamelis Virginiana

Better known as Witch Hazel.  Witch Hazel is derived from witch hazel shrub bark.

Witch Hazel is a natural toner. It is a natural plant-derived astringent that tones and cleanses.

Unlike most toners and astringents, it is not harsh on the skin. Rather, Witch Hazel calms irritation. It also tightens pores and removes impurities.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

A stable form of Vitamin C known as SAP.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a water-soluble C particularly effective in acne treatment and prevention. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is a stable precursor of vitamin C that ensures a constant delivery of vitamin C into the skin. [3]

It won’t turn brown or go bad. SAP has a strong antimicrobial effect.

Jojoba Seeds

Jojoba Seeds

Organic Simmondsia Chinensis

Organic Jojoba Oil.  Jojoba oil is an emollient, made of 98% monounsaturated fats.

Jojoba removes impurities and flakes, reduces inflammation, and soothes skin.

Jojoba gives elasticity and softness to the skin without causing acne or clogged pores.

Flowering Camellia Sinensis

Flowering Camellia Sinensis

Organic Camellia Sinensis

Organic Green Tea. Green Tea in skincare feeds and moisturizes the skin, calms irritation and is an excellent antioxidant.

Green Tea Extract Green tea contains polyphenols that soothe skin while providing antioxidants. Polyphenols may improve sun-damaged skin. [4]

Arnica

Arnica

Arnica Montana Flower Extract

Organic Arnica Montana Flower Extract is derived from the Arnica flower.

Arnica flower is a natural anti-inflammatory. It reduces puffiness without causing dryness or dehydration.

It also decreases bruising and inflammation. Arnica promotes healing and reduces swelling.[5]

Organic Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract

Calendula AKA Marigold

Best known as marigold. Calendula flower promotes the regeneration of new tissue and soothes damaged skin.

Studies have shown that calendula can increase collagen production and stimulates epithelial cell growth to promote cell turnover [6].

Licorice root

Licorice root

Organic Glycyrrhiza Glabra

Better known as Licorice Root Extract.

Licorice root contains glabridin, a potent antioxidant that soothes skin.

It lightens dark circles gently, improves uneven tone and skin redness.

It is safe for even sensitive skin. [7]

It removes discoloration naturally from delicate areas of the face, throat, and hands.

Glycerin

This Kosher Vegetable Glycerin is a natural vegetable-derived, non-toxic humectant that helps the skin to retain moisture.

Glycerin fills in gaps in dryer skin which makes skin look better and keeps the outer layer of the skin intact.

PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS EXTRACT on StyleChicks.com

Pelargonium Gravolens

Better known as Geranium Flower Oil.

Pelargonium Graveolens Extract is a sweet-scented, rare geranium. It boosts skin elasticity and regulates sebum production. It is a very good antioxidant for the skin. It reduces inflammation by releasing excess water into skin tissue. [8]

The extract is superior to the oil as it removes the possibility of skin irritation due to the fragrance.

Tocopheryl Acetate

A form of Vitamin E that comes from plant seeds.

It is a skin-softening antioxidant that makes damaged skin (scars, sun-damaged) pliable.  Once the skin is pliable, other treating ingredients can work their magic.

Royal Jelly

Royal Jelly Extract

Royal Jelly Extract is a bee product.

Royal Jelly is the gelatinous substance bees make to feed the queen bee. Royal Jelly is an anti-inflammatory anti-oxidant filled with skin-friendly nutrients. It smooths fine lines and wrinkles and enables skin repair. [9]

And bonus: Royal Jelly can promote collagen production. [10]

Verbascum Thapsus

Verbascum Thapsus is also known as the Mullen plant.

In skincare, it provides a plant-based, skin-protecting anti-oxidant.

The Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum Experience

With 50% Hyaluronic Acid, Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum plumps my skin and makes it smooth, dewy, vibrant, and keeps it that way all day. My skin just drinks it in!

It is ideal under makeup as it does not leave my skin sticky or tacky.  It will not pill under sunscreen.

Unlike some HAs, the surface of my skin does not feel dry after a few hours. Hyaluronic Acid draws in so much moisture from the air that sometimes skin is left parched. The Jeffrey James Botanicals The Serum formula has several hydrating ingredients to counteract that problem.
