what is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is a water-soluble vitamin. The topical application of Niacinamide improves enlarged pores, fine lines, dullness, and a weakened skin surface. [1,2] It boosts hydration, fades hyperpigmentation and helps skin retain firmness. [3]

Niacinamide is great for sensitive skin that is unable to tolerate retinol.[4] Niacinamide is relatively nonirritating compared to other acne treatments. [5]

Niacinamide Research

Research shows Niacinamide has many benefits. Studies show that Niacinamide can:

  • Fade dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and discoloration naturally and gently. [6]  One study showed Niacinamide was less effective than hydroquinone. But in about two months, it did almost as good a job fading dark spots but without the side effects of hydroquinone. [7]
  • Provide pollution skincare. Niacinamide reduces the impact of environmental damage because it improves skin’s barrier [8]
  • Reduce the inflammation of rosacea and other inflammatory skin conditions [9]
  • Treat acne. In a double-blind clinical trial of inflammatory acne, 4% niacinamide worked as good as an antibiotic. [10]
  • Regulate sebum production [11]
  • Make ceramides [12]
  • Hold skin cancer prevention properties:
“Niacinamide … prevents ultraviolet radiation (UV) from reducing ATP levels and inhibiting glycolysis, thus preventing the UV radiation‐induced energy crisis. This enhances DNA repair and reduces UV‐induced suppression of immunity” [13]

What Makes this formulation special?

While gentler than many actives, some people experience irritation with Niacinamide. This formulation contains buffers like Organic Sunflower Seed Oil and Organic Aloe Vera that nourish the skin.

Importantly it combines Niacinamide with Hyaluronic Acid which works synergistically.

The Skin Daily Skin Care Solutions Niacinamide 5% Face Serum organic ingredient list includes hyaluronic acid

Why Hyaluronic + Niacinamide Works

A feature of this Skin Daily formulation is the pairing of Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide.

Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the skin, but it depletes as we age. Topical Hyaluronic Acid application replaces levels in the skin, giving a youthful glow.

This Skin Daily formulation pairs Niacinamide with Hyaluronic Acid

This Skin Daily formulation pairs Niacinamide with Hyaluronic Acid

Niacinamide makes hyaluronic acid in the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid is like a friend with VIP access; it uses its’ moisture pulling ability to draw active ingredients, like Niacinamide into deeper skin layers. The deeper Niacinamide can work, the better the overall skin appearance.

This means Hyaluronic helps Niacinamide make MORE hyaluronic in the lower layers of the skin.

It is imperative to use a moisturizer over Hyaluronic Acid, as it draws as much moisture as possible into the skin. If Hyaluronic Acid can’t get enough moisture, the surface of the skin can appear DRY, because the Hyaluronic is still “thirsty.” Fortunately, Skin Daily is packed with moisturizers.

This is a superior formulation with skin-friendly, natural, Niacinamide supporting ingredients. Let’s take a closer look:

Ingredients

Organic ingredients

Aloe vera nourishes delicate eye skin

Aloe vera nourishes delicate eye skin

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice comes from the Aloe Vera plant. Aloe Vera provides nourishment to the skin as it contains Vitamins A, C, Bs, and E as well as minerals and enzymes. This skin “food” heals, hydrates, and accelerates skin cell growth to treat acne and fight skin aging. It provides anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It soothes irritation.

NIACINAMIDE

A natural skin brightener that reduces hyperpigmentation and fine lines with strengthening Strengthens skin barrier, brightens, improving fine lines, and reduction in hyper-pigmentation.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid gets “beauty secret weapon” status due to its’ ability to hold enormous amounts of moisture; it can draw moisture from the air, sucking it into the skin. This moisture drawing ability has a dual benefit. Not only does it make skin as plump and dewy as possible, creating an environment where the skin contains as much hydration as it can hold, but it uses this water drawing ability to pull active ingredients, like Niacinamide, deeper into the skin.

How Hairmetto Saw Palmetto Oil For Hair Grow

February 1, 2020 · 7 Comments

Many hair loss suffers seek a natural alternative to hair regrowth prescription drugs. The Beta-sitosterol in saw palmetto shows remarkable hair growth-promoting activity. [1]  A natural effective topical Saw Palmetto formulation is HAIRMETTO Saw Palmetto Oil. We researched this formulation and were impressed with what we found. It is a combination of natural ingredients scientifically proven to stop the contributing factors of hair loss and maximize hair growth potential in both men and women.
Hairmetto Saw Palmetto Oil for Hair Growth

Hairmetto Saw Palmetto Oil for Hair Growth

HAIRMETTO Saw Palmetto Oil is a natural formulation that blocks DHT and Androgens. It also stimulates hair follicles. Its namesake ingredient is Saw Palmetto.

Saw Palmetto is available as an oral supplement. HAIRMETTO Saw Palmetto Oil is applied topically directly only to the areas you need to it for best results.

For a topical formulation to stop hair loss or help hair grow, it must address the source of hair loss. This calls for understanding the relationship between hair loss and DHT.

Hairmetto Saw Palmetto Oil for Hair Growth has an easy-to-use

Hairmetto Saw Palmetto Oil for Hair Growth has an easy-to-use nozzle for precision application

Understanding DHT & Hair Loss

DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a natural hormone that accumulates on the scalp.

DHT is the enemy.

DHT settles at the base of the hair follicle. It also accumulates under dandruff and dry flakes. If left unaddressed, DHT smothers the hair follicle and blocks protein absorption. DHT causes hair follicle shrinkage. [2]  This deters new hair growth until the follicle doesn’t grow hair at all. While both men and women have DHT, testosterone elevates DHT levels in men.

Hairmetto Saw Palmetto Oil for Hair Growth

Hairmetto Saw Palmetto Oil for Hair Growth

How do you know your follicles are suffering from DHT build-up?

You can detect a struggling follicle by looking for shorter, thinner hairs on your head. The existing hair gets thinner and shorter until it sheds and another hair does not grow back in its’ place. When many follicles do this, hair becomes sparse in areas, exposing more scalp.

Medicinal ingredient list of Hairmetto

Can anything stop DHT?

A few natural ingredients are proven to remove DHT. Some also improve blood flow to kick-start hair regrowth. [3] Once DHT is removed and kept off the scalp, recently dormant follicles can grow hair again.

That is where HAIRMETTO Saw Palmetto Oil comes in. Let’s look at the ingredient list.

Ingredient Profile

SAW PALMETTO (SERENOA REPENS)
Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto comes from Serenoa repens

Saw Palmetto comes from the berries of Serenoa repens, a small palm plant. It is a natural DHT blocker. Saw Palmetto is also a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor. 5 alpha-reductase converts testosterone to DHT resulting in male pattern baldness. [4]

Saw Palmetto also inhibits the DHT receptors in the follicles. This limits the damage that any remaining DHT can do.

This formulation has 200mg of Saw Palmetto.

PUMPKIN SEED OIL (CUCURBITA PEPO)

Studies show that Pumpkin Seed oil inhibits DHT production. The oils’ phytosterols inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT in the scalp.  Delta-7-sterine stops DHT from binding with hair follicles. [5]

Pumpkin Seed Oil on StyleChicks.com

Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seed oil also nourishes the scalp. It contains fatty acids, vitamins, proteins, and minerals.

It is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. This maintains cell structure and moisture levels of the scalp and hair.

Pumpkin Seed Oil is high in Vitamin E and zinc to promote skin renewal.

Zinc reduces scalp issues such as seborrheic dermatitis, dry flakes, itching, and irritation.

Pumpkin Seed Oil is best used within a formulation rather than on its own.

This formulation has 4000mg of Pumpkin Seed Oil.

CASTOR SEED OIL (RICINUS COMMUNIS)

Castor Seed Oil has long been used to promote hair growth. No scientific studies to date correlate Castor Oil with hair regrowth or stop loss. Castor Seed Oil does remove some of the barriers that impede hair growth.

Castor seed oil is a humectant

Castor seed oil

These barriers include scalp conditions such as scalp infection, chronically dry scalps, or other scalp inflammation. Castor Seed Oil contributes to the general moisture levels and health of the scalp. A healthy scalp is necessary to have an environment conducive to hair growth. Castor Seed Oil is rich in vitamins and fatty acids to nourish both hair and scalp.

Castor Seed Oil is a humectant. It temporarily plumps the hair with moisture for a fuller and healthier look. It also gives hair more flexibility, protecting new hairs and existing brittle hair. If you see breakage close to the hair root, brittleness can be a culprit and Castor Seed Oil can help.

Castor Seed Oil is an excellent base oil for the next three important ingredients.

Rosemary for hair growth

A double-blind, evidence-based method study showed a mix of lavender, rosemary, and cedarwood extract (the next three ingredients in this formulation) reduced hair loss significantly amongst alopecia areata patients. [6]

Individually, each of these essential oils also benefits scalp health and hair growth:

ROSEMARY EXTRACT
Rosemary

Rosemary

Rosemary Extract stimulates and promotes better blood circulation to deliver the nutrients necessary to build collagen, elastin and to encourage scar repair.

It also has natural antiseptic properties and is a gentle exfoliant for dead skin flakes.

An exciting study demonstrated Rosemary Oil is as effective as Minoxidil for hair growth stimulation without the chemical side effects.  Rosemary combats a specific type of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia.

Research shows massaging the scalp for six months with Rosemary oil and carrier oil is as effective as 5% Minoxidil at regrowing hair.[7]

Another study found the 12-methoxycarnosic acid in Rosemary Extract a promising crude drug for treating male pattern baldness caused by 5α-reductase inhibition, or the testosterone conversion to DHT on the scalp. The study concluded “These results suggest that they inhibit the binding of dihydrotestosterone to androgen receptors”. [8]

Lavender In Hairmetto

LAVENDER EXTRACT

Lavender’s anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties keep the scalp healthy. It has soothing properties to calm any scalp imbalances such as inflammation or dry skin flaking. This is beneficial to remove places that DHT might accumulate.

The linalyl acetate in lavender enhances cell growth in skin and hair.

Some lab studies show promise in lavender inducing faster hair growth. [9]

CEDARWOOD EXTRACT
Cedarwood essential oil is a substance derived from the needles, leaves, bark, and berries of cedar trees.

Cedar bark

Cedarwood extract is derived from the needles, leaves, bark, and berries of cedar trees.

Cedarwood reduces hair loss by balancing oil production.

It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties to keep the scalp healthy.

The Science of Pumpkin Seed Oil

Can Pumpkin Seed Oil address hair loss?
A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial showed Mean hair count increases of 40% were observed in Pumpkin Seed Oil-treated men at 24 weeks. [10]

OUR EXPERIENCE

I part my hair and apply the oil directly to hair roots with the nozzle tip and massage my scalp well.

It is left to absorb in overnight into hair shafts and roots.  It is not a heavy viscosity but not watery either. It reminds me of the consistency of apricot oil.

It is not itchy or hair-clumping like many Minoxidil preparations.

Hairmetto is a light consistency oil that absorbs well.

I like being able to apply it just to the roots of sparser areas without covering my hair with greasy oil.  I like that the nutrients are applied directly to my weaker follicles instead of circulating in my body and impacting other hormonal responses.

I don’t always like to wash hair daily. My hair is on the dry side, but the oil absorbed into my roots by morning. Oilier hair types might use bit of dry shampoo to re-fluff. There is no residue.

It smells faintly of lavender.

Massage in a few drops into the scalp and leave in overnight

According to the American Hair Loss Association, 40% of women experience hair loss.[11] Women have fewer options and many proven hair regrowth prescription drugs have side effect profiles undesirable for women [12].  Hairmetto Saw Palmetto Oil provides a safe and effective way to naturally stop hair loss. The ingredients are all safe and nourish the scalp and hair. The correct proportions of scientifically backed ingredients come pre-mixed and the oil is exceptionally easy to use.

HairMax Quick Dry Towel

January 30, 2020 · 8 Comments

Isn’t a towel just a towel? Not when it comes to your hair. The HAIRMAX QUICK DRY HAIR TOWEL protects the hair cuticle and reduces The risk of hair breakage. There is currently a limited time 50% off offer at HairMax.com. We picked up a few extras to keep our tresses safe when wet.

Why A Hair Towel Is Necessary

If you are growing out your hair, losing hair, or are a curly, the right hair towel is important.

Hair breakage is common with chemical processing, hot tool use and hair loss. Wet hair is vulnerable. Keep hair in its’ best condition with a proper hair towel. A bath towel intended to dry off body skin is too rough for delicate wet hair. Terry cloth towels feel soft and fluffy on the skin, but can fray the hair cuticle and cause breakage.

A good hair towel should absorb enough water to reduce drying time and limit exposure to hot styling tools.

Our Experience

The HairMax Quick Dry Hair Towel is an absorbent microfiber that’s gentle to hair. The Quick Dry Hair Towel is lightweight and it stays put.

HairMax Towel

HairMax Towel

This towel is generously sized at 19 x 52 inches, if you have long hair, you may have been disappointed with other hair towels. This one accommodates even very long hair.

Got curly hair? This makes hair form into pretty well-formed ringlets and curls, not frizz. The towel cradles the hair while wicking moisture. The towel also removes enough moisture to optimize hair product penetration.

I let my hair air-dry about 70% in the towel, then finish off my hair with hair-drying on the lowest heat setting to style. I love the lack of frizz, and styling my hair is so much faster and healthier.

Flake Free Exfoliation with Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum | aHA Exfoliating Peel

January 22, 2020 · 12 Comments

UPDATE: This article is a product review of Mad Hippie aHA Exfoliating Peel that was formerly named Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum. Read our experience.

Exfoliation enables proper absorption of actives and removes dull, bacteria-trapping dead skin. Exfoliation can also irritate and leave skin dry and peeling.
Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum is an impressive exfoliative that doesn’t sting, irritate or burn, yet gently removes dead skin with ZERO itchy, red peeling. And it is packed with all kinds of goodness to improve skin texture and clarity while fading discoloration. Apply it at night, and wake up to smoother skin!
Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum

Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum is now called aHA Exfoliating Peel

About Exfoliating Sensitive Skin

Exfoliating sensitive skin is necessary but tricky.

Our three test subjects used Mad Hippie Exfoliative Serum for one week. All three experienced a major exfoliative impact with zero rubbing, scrubbing or skin irritation.

OF NOTE: Two of our three Style Chicks team testers have very sensitive skin. They cannot tolerate most traditional exfoliation scrubs or Glycolic peels higher than 10%. They had no problems with this serum.

Why Mad Hippie Exfoliative Serum works

While it is not irritating, it is powerful. Don’t layer it with other actives like Alpha Lipoic Acid, Retinol or Mad Hippie Triple C Night Cream. Plenty is going on already in this formulation, it contains 16 actives. There are aHAs, peptides, antioxidants and excellent buffers. Let’s take a look:

Ingredient Profile

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid (AHA) loosens the glue that adheres dry, dead skin to healthy skin, and then dissolves away the dead skin. It is a superior form of exfoliation for mature skin because there is no rubbing or pulling the skin. There is also little to no peeling and limited redness or irritation after use. Skin is brighter, younger, softer, with few lines and wrinkles, and it glows like younger skin. Glycolic Acid reduces acne scars. [1] Glycolic Acid also promotes collagen production.

Apple Stem Cells

Malus Domestica

Malus Domestica

Malus Domestica Fruit Cell Culture Extract is Apple Stem Cells. Malus Domestica is a Swiss Apple particularly suited for creating vegan-based stem cells. The stem cells build new tissue, delay aging and fight wrinkles.

Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate Acid)

Hyaluronic Acid retains moisture and increases the effectiveness of other ingredients.  Hyaluronic acid holds its weight in moisturizer. It holds so much moisture that it instantly plumps fine lines. This plumps the skin, making fine wrinkles and mild sagging temporarily disappear.

Sodium HA is a non-synthesized form of Hyaluronic Acid. It has Hyaluronic Acid benefits. It is a humectant and offers stronger moisture retention properties than regular HA. It is found naturally and ample supply in young skin, but depletes with age.

Sodium Hyaluronate Acid has a lower molecular size compared to other Hyaluronic Acids. This is good because it can absorb deeper into the skin.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid exfoliates and brightens skin. It is gentler than glycolic acid. Lactic acid holds moisture while increasing firmness and skin thickness.

Glycerin

Glycerin a non-toxic natural humectant. It helps skin attract and maintain moisture. It fills in gaps in dryer skin which makes skin look better and keeps the outer layer of the skin intact.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

Vitamin E softens skin texture. Vitamin E makes rough, sunburned, scarred or otherwise damaged skin soft and pliable. Once the skin is pliable, other treating ingredients can work their magic.

Matrixyl Synthe’ 6

A polypeptide concoction that stimulates the production of collagen I and IV. This peptide cocktail contains Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38. Palmitoyl tripeptide-38 is a vegan ingredient. It improves fine lines and wrinkles, most notably forehead lines and crow’s feet.

Matrixyl Synthe’ 6 is a notable inclusion in this serum, as it does the work of a heavy-duty nighttime serum.

Goji Berries

Goji Berry Extract

Goji berry (Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract) is an antioxidant that softens the skin. It is considered a superfruit.

Vitamin B5

(Panthenol) is a humectant that fosters skin healing. [2]

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a Vitamin B3 derivative. It combats sallowness, blotchiness and the hyperpigmented spots in aging skin. It addresses a loss of elasticity and reduces redness. It also fades acne scars and brightens the skin.

White Tea Extract (Camelia Sinensis)

White tea is gentle yet powerful. It has similar benefits to Green Tea with phenols and EGCG. As a topical ingredient, it evens the skin tone. It is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It reduces redness and inflammation around the delicate eye area. White tea also contains EGCG, which enables the production of new cells in the epidermis [3]. It contains phenols to strengthen collagen and elastin. This gives skin a bouncy, younger look while delaying wrinkles.

Caffeine

Caffeine stimulates blood circulation

Caffeine

Caffeine has antioxidant properties and slows down photo-aging. Caffeine stimulates blood circulation and reduces puffiness. It is particularly effective on firmness, reducing fine lines and crow’s feet.

Biotin

Biotin is Vitamin H, AKA B7. It is responsible for building blocks of protein and is involved in skin moisture levels.

Ceramide-3

Ceramide-3 is an excellent moisturizing ingredient. Ceramides are fatty acids that hold cells together to protect the epidermis. Ceramides create a protective barrier layer,  hold in moisture and plump the skin. Natural ceramides deplete with age. Even younger skin loses ceramides when using harsh cleansers or drying skincare products. Ceramide-3 keeps skin hydrated without being greasy.

My Experience

Use half a dropper of serum on the face and throat. I tap it on around the eye area/orbital bone but keep it away from the eye. There is no stinging or burning. I wait about 10-15 minutes and apply moisturizer on top. No pilling.

Apply one half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

The Exfoliating Serum as seen in the Maddie Hippie Serum Combo. Apply one-half dropper of the serum to face and throat.

In the morning, the skin seems evener. There is no dryness. Upon face washing, dead skin just gently melts off without rubbing and scrubbing. There is no telltale redness or peeling flakes. Skin is just soft and smooth.

It is gentle enough to use nightly, I use it every other night. I find it effective to alternate off this serum and Mad Hippie Triple C Night Cream.  Sensitive Skin users might try using Mad Hippie Exfoliative Serum 2 nights a week and the Vitamin C Serum daily.
