Science of Skincare: The GroundBreaking Collagen & Skin Elasticity Study For Ninja Level Anti-Aging

February 26, 2020 · 2 Comments

Amongst the countless skincare products and procedures out there, what REALLY restores collagen? A recent study revealed facts that may alter what products you use in the fight against dull, aging skin.

The Collagen Conundrum

There are many collagen types in our body. Each collagen type has a function. Effective anti-aging skincare is not just restoring some form of collagen on areas of visible aging. It requires producing the right kind of collagen in the right place. This gives skin resilience and elasticity.  Tricky, right?

We knew the deeper the skin can be stimulated to produce new collagen, the less facial sagging there will be.  That’s still true, but now there is more intel.

The Super Science-y Skin Study

A groundbreaking skin study revealed the composition of live young and aging skin.  It looked at the “baby collagen” in the skin. It noted the changes in elasticity with age in the twenties, thirties, and forties.

Special technology imaged the internal elasticity of the skin. It noted the concentration of the individual collagen fibers. They located which ones made skin elastic, taut and youthful. The location and impact of these concentrated collagen clusters were new information.

“The team also studied how the variations in skin elasticity in the papillary dermis would change the look of the skin and discovered that the skin surface of females without any signs of variations in elasticity was more likely to be smooth, whereas that of females with decreased elasticity looked slightly rough” [1]

The Result

The result? Now we know exactly WHERE we need to restore collagen. And we know which type of collagen rejuvenates skin and keeps it “springy”.

“The team has found out that type III collagen is abundant in the areas with healthy skin elasticity in the uppermost layer of the dermis, but it decreases in the parts where the skin elasticity has deteriorated. This suggests that the decrease in type III collagen triggers the decrease in skin elasticity” [2]

In sum: what makes skin healthy, elastic and vibrant is collagen III within the dermal cells of the papillary dermis skin layer.

And the study identified the exact ingredient to accomplish the task.  It is an ingredient that appears in skincare brands like Shiseido and Tatcha. It is also a natural ingredient that can be organically farmed. It’s Watercress. Yep, Watercress.

Watercress helps makes Type Collagen III in dermal cells

what to do About It

Henceforth, beauty buddies, we tackle anti-aging with the precision of a vapid ninja.

We‘re featuring select products using Watercress to best advantage to precisely target Collagen III production in the proper dermal cells.

And there are some great skin products in this lineup, including an all-natural Beauty Superfood oil with a Watercress base.

Skincare with Copper: Beauty Buzzword or Beneficial Must-Have?

January 21, 2020 · 12 Comments

Copper in Skincare:
Does it Work?

Copper is one of the recent beauty buzzwords increasingly appearing within skincare. Skin care products with copper are generally on the pricer end of the spectrum. It all sounds promising, but what does research say about copper in skincare?

Copper is available in some foods, supplement form and topically within skin creams and serums.

How Copper Benefits Skin and Hair

Copper peptides promote collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production within the skin. All three are vital for skin firmness, texture, radiance, and appearance. But all three of these components decrease with age. Elastin is especially difficult to replace. Few skin products build Elastin like copper. Elastin is a necessary part of younger, resilient skin with less sagging. Elastin gives skin its’ youthful springy and bouncy quality.  Elastin is crucial to achieve young-looking skin because it reduces sagging and wrinkles.

Copper peptides also remove damaged collagen. [1]

Copper is useful for hair growth. Copper is used in both hair supplements and topical scalp applications. Copper increases the size of shrunken hair follicles. It stops hair thinning and often reduces premature graying.

why are copper products so expensive?

The copper extraction process is costly and produces little skincare-quality copper. A product requires a certain amount of copper to make a meaningful difference. It won’t be the first listing of the ingredient list, but it can’t be effective if it is the last ingredient of a long list.

For best results, Copper should be paired with supporting ingredients. These include Peptides, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and retinoids. [2]

Recommended Products Containing Copper

Some products featuring copper which we find effective include:

Osmotics Cosmeceuticals Blue Copper 5 line features copper in both their skin care and hair care range. We love the attention Osmotics gives to copper-supporting ingredients like Vitamin C and other key ingredients to get the most bang for your beauty buck.

When it comes to proper copper delivery for beauty benefits, Osmotics Cosmeceuticals is the real deal.

Naturally Copper-rich Ingredients

Konjac Root contains copper amongst its’ many nutrients, as well as Vitamin C. Since copper works so well with C, Konjac Root is a great active ingredient in skincare. Meanwhile, it holds water in skin.

One Konjac Root product we love is Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum, it contains all the actives that work well with copper.

Science Driven Skincare Tools: Kat Burki Micro Firming Wand

January 14, 2020 · 7 Comments

Want to make the most of those precious serums, concentrates, and eye creams? Kat Burki Micro Firming Wand to the rescue. It uses ionic energy via iontophoresis and micro-vibration to enhance the effect of active ingredients while firming the skin. This ensures the absorption of every last drop of a skincare product so nothing goes to waste.
The perfect pairing: Kat Burki Eye Concentrate with Kat Burki Micro Wand

The perfect pairing: Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream with Kat Burki Micro Firming Wand

We recently featured the Kat Burki Nutrient-C Eye Cream, a stable Vitamin C with a slew of natural, skin-enhancing ingredients. The Kat Burki Micro Firming Wand enables the absorption of every precious drop.

WHAT IT IS

A lightweight, handheld cordless tool that gently massages in your favorite creams and serums to increase absorption. It uses ionic energy via iontophoresis and micro-vibration to enhance the effect of active ingredients.

WHAT IT DOES

This tool is helpful because the delicate eye area is tricky. It is easy to accidentally stretch or rub eye skin when applying topicals.

Instead of rubbing your favorite serum into the delicate eye area, we love the idea of using this micro FIRMING WAND.

The Science

This tool employs two known principles of transdermal delivery: Iontophoresis and micro-vibration.

Iontophoresis

This wand employs a known means of delivering a treating active (typically a medicinal drug) into the outermost layer of the skin by using a voltage gradient on the skin. The voltage increases the permeability of the skin. This practice is called Iontophoresis.

Iontophoresis uses an electric current to deliver a medicine or other chemical through the skin. It is sometimes called “an injection without the needle”. Iontophoresis is used in therapy, medicine, dentistry, lab sciences, and physiology.

In this case, the voltage gradient is low and is not felt as anything other than a light vibration. There is no “zapping” feeling and it stops when there is no more product to absorb. There is no “overdoing” it or irritating the skin with this wand.

Micro-vibration

Micro-vibration applies just the right amount of pressure to aid absorption without harming the skin. It is a subtle oscillation, not the full-on Clarisonic like oscillating power, which would be too intense for delicate areas like eyes, browbone. The wand is powerful enough to aid absorption but gentle enough for the eye area. It only vibrates when their is product moisture and it is pressed correctly against your skin. Once the product absorbs, it automatically shuts off.

Micro-vibration is firming because it enhances micro-circulation.

ABOUT THE KAT BURKI BRAND

The brand delivers only cold-processed, nutrient-dense formulations. Every Kat Burki product is packed with intelligently created Super Nutrient Complexes for maximum potency – every element has a purpose. Every formula is free from chemicals, parabens, synthetic fragrances, gluten and are cruelty-free.  There are no fillers. Because they are so nutrient-rich, it makes perfect sense that they would develop a tool to aid absorption.

Style Chicks Favorite Things: reVive Light Therapy Clinical – Acne Treatment

December 5, 2019 · 10 Comments

Back in May 2017, we reviewed the reVive Light Therapy Clinical – Acne Treatment device, a home light therapy device for the treatment of acne. It has continued to be one of our personal favorite skincare devices for reducing and preventing acne.

In case you didn’t catch it the first time, we wanted to bring you our review of this astounding device that delivers medi-spa level results in the convenience of your own home. We also have added a few tips we picked up in the time we have been using it!

So let’s get to it!

Thought acne was over now that you’re over 21? Think again.  Adult acne plagues both men and women. Light therapy is an effective acne treatment. Non-invasive and pain-free, light therapy is available in spas and dermatologist offices. Now it is also available in cost-effective devices for at-home use. But not all at-home light therapy devices are created equal. So we’re excited to find the highly effective, FDA-cleared, medical-grade reVive Light Therapy Clinical – Acne Treatment device.

ACNE CAN OCCUR AT ANY AGE

Teenage skin can bounce back from the drying effect of acne medications. But as an adult, battling acne and aging at the same time is daunting. What is worse, the topical products that worked in your teens aren’t even that effective on adult acne.

WHAT MAKES THE REVIVE LIGHT THERAPY CLINICAL -ACNE TREATMENT DEVICE SUPERIOR TO OTHER AT-HOME DEVICES?

reVive Light Therapy Clinical – Acne Treatment is a superior LED Light Therapy device. It is an FDA-cleared and OTC Class II medical-grade device. It features DPL (Deep Penetrating Light) Technology. This provides in-office quality results at home. DPL technology sets this device apart from many of the at-home use devices. DPL can get deep into the skin as an in-office treatment does.

Supported by Clinical Research

reVive is safe and effective for all skin tones. In a clinical study, 98% of users had improved acne. We liked this aspect because many skincare products cite user reports of how the users THINK they look when using the product. But reVive cites a clinical study with objective measures of efficacy for their results.

Safe for all skin tones, 98% of study participants in a clinical study demonstrated improved acne and dramatically clearer skin

WHY LIGHT THERAPY FOR ACNE

Light encourages the body to heal. LED Light Therapy studies show rapid acne reduction. Blue light eliminates the bacteria on the skin, even in deeper skin layers. Light reaches deeper than a washcloth or sonic facial cleansing brush. It’s painless with no side effects. Continue to use your regular skincare products without a conflict.

WHY REVIVE LED LIGHT THERAPY

Has your acne ever looked better after a day of sun at the beach? All light kills bacteria. But light can cause skin damage.  reVive Light Therapy Clinical – Acne Treatment uses only the specific wavelength that eliminates bacteria: 415 nanometers on the blue light spectrum.

This wavelength of light attacks acne in three ways:
  1. It kills acne-causing bacteria
  2. It clears existing breakouts by starving the pimple.
  3. It prevents acne flare-ups by regulating oil production.
Studies show the precise 415 nm wavelength of light used by the reVive is safe and effective for acne treatment

Studies show this precise 415 nm wavelength of blue light used by the reVive is safe and effective for acne treatment

This blue light leads to clear skin, often within
just a few days. It also reduces redness and inflammation. This makes acne less noticeable and easier to conceal with makeup. Safe for all skin tones, it will not alter the skin color. It is safe for sensitive skin that cannot tolerate topical acne treatments.

It doesn’t dry the skin like a topical cream. And bonus: the light enhances collagen production.

That’s a lot of blue light! reVive treats a large area of skin in acne-reducing light therapy with powerful diodes

I prefer this device with it’s big head to some of the spot treatment smaller devices to kill bacteria quickly and pre-empt acne instead of spot treating acne after it appears.

RESULTS

After one week of daily device use, my skin appeared much clearer with no major breakouts. Even stubborn blackheads around my nose are diminishing!

Favorite Things: reVive dpl® IIa for Professional Wrinkle Reduction and Acne Treatment Light Therapy

November 24, 2019 · 10 Comments

Back in March 2018, we reviewed the reVive dpl® IIa, a home light therapy device. It has continued to be one of our personal favorite skincare device for reducing signs of aging and acne. The Style Chicks Skincare Team is astounded at the efficacy of the device and how easy it is to use.

reVive is having an amazing 40% off sitewide starting Thursday, November 28th through the end of the day Tuesday, December 3rd, no promo code necessary. In case you didn’t catch it the first time, we wanted to bring you our review of this astounding device that delivers medi-spa level results in the convenience of your own home, and at a fraction of the price, especially with the amazing Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale, they will be offering. We also have added a few tips we picked up in the time we have been using it!

So let’s get to it!

As part of our Style Chicks Hair and Skin Care Series, we’re exploring the advantages of home light therapy for improving skin. LED light therapy builds collagen, reduces wrinkles, improves acne, fades discoloration and scars. A high-quality light therapy device is a worthwhile investment. We recently tried the reVive dpl® IIa – Professional Wrinkle Reduction and Acne Treatment Light Therapy, which is an FDA-cleared, OTC Class II medical device. It is a lightweight panel big enough to cover the entire face at once. It uses powerful LED diodes that emit safe light therapy that tackles acne and wrinkles while building collagen.

Revive DPL Light Device

WHAT LIGHT THERAPY DOES FOR SKIN

Backed by numerous clinical studies, blue and red light therapy are both effective, pain-free, chemical-free, non-invasive way to improve the skin’s texture, tone, and firmness.

WHAT THE REVIVE dpl® IIa PANEL DOES

This device is for acne treatment and wrinkles. Today we focus primarily on the anti-wrinkle/anti-aging aspect of this device.

It reduces wrinkles by promoting collagen production. More collagen means stronger, more elastic skin with less sagging.

The device also improves skin tone, texture and reduces hyperpigmentation, which promotes the appearance of healthy, glowing, and youthful skin.

The reVive dpl® IIa is the only full-face professional light therapy devices with FDA clearance for in-home use.

THE REVIVE DPL® IIa SET INCLUDES:

  • Device
  • AC/DC power supply
  • Instruction manual
  • Goggles
  • One year warranty

HOW DOES THE REVIVE DPL® IIa RATE?

As beauty bloggers, we’ve tried many at-home light therapy products. The reVive DPL® IIa is in a class by itself. This light is powerful and consistently even, and feels much more like an in-office caliber treatment than other commercially available light therapy devices we’ve tried.

GOGGLES

The goggles say optional, but in my opinion, they are mandatory. The reason is that even with the goggles AND my eyes closed, I can still see the brightness of the light, just like a professional in-office IPL or light therapy treatment.

But I do like using these goggles, though, as they’re designed to fit just over the actual eye, exposing the maximum amount of orbital skin area for treatment. This allows dark circles, sagging upper lids and browbones, and the general orbital skin to get treatment, including crow’s feet.

The goggles are adjustable to be secure but comfortable.

FULL-FACE TREATMENT AT ONCE

This book-sized device covers your entire face (and much of throat) at once, making for faster and evener treatment.

DEEPLY SATURATED COLORED LIGHT

This device produces a powerful light! The whole wall behind you will be illuminated with color like a neon sign. Once you see that, other at-home light therapy devices pale in comparison. It’s not that other devices can’t deliver results, but if I’m going to spend the time and money do light therapy at home, I want a powerfully effective device.

MULTIPLE LIGHT THERAPY MODES

Choose the red or blue light setting, or use both at once.

RED LIGHT WRINKLE SETTING

RED LIGHT jump-starts tissue rejuvenation by increasing blood flow and collagen stimulation. Red light therapy significantly improves skin complexion, tone, and texture. It also reduces roughness, wrinkles, and fine lines. In clinical studies, Ultrasonographic tests show red light therapy increases collagen.

BLUE LIGHT ACNE SETTING

BLUE LIGHT is used to treat acne because it eliminates bacteria, reduces inflammation and redness, stabilizes oil glands, fades old and new scars and discoloration. This is especially helpful for adult acne, as the harsh drying methods we may have used as a teen are too rough on adult skin, especially wrinkling skin.

COMBO MODE: BOTH RED AND BLUE AT ONCE SETTING

Treat wrinkles and acne simultaneously with both red and blue light. This mode uses all of the colored light diodes for a super-powerful light therapy treatment. The combo works very effectively for wrinkles and maximizes light therapy based collagen production while fading discoloration and redness.

Interested in the expanded details on how these specific colors of light therapy work from a clinical view? Read our upcoming post covering all the need to know the science behind home light therapy.

Using the device for a dual red and blue light therapy treatment. The diodes are powerful enough to cover my face, neck, palms, and the wall behind me in intense colored light

EASE OF USE

It’s comfortable on the skin, there is no burning or any discomfort at all, it’s quite relaxing. The device opens like a book, and it’s easy to hold the device for treatment right on the face. It’s lightweight like a Kindle tablet and can be propped up if needed.

It beeps at every minute interval until the treatment is over and it shuts itself off.

TIP: Before a light therapy session, apply an SPF-free serum or moisturizer for maximum benefit. We love the When Revivifying line from When Beauty. This decadent three-product line (which we will be reviewing soon), contains Brown Algae Extract from Jeju Island in South Korea. Brown Algae is photo-reactive, so using it with the reVive dpl IIa amplifies the effects!

This device is a collagen-building lifesaver for those with sensitive skin who cannot tolerate Vitamin C serums or Retinol because it works without any irritation, redness or dryness.

The device is lightweight like a Kindle tablet and opens like a book for a double paneled treatment display

The device is lightweight like a Kindle tablet and opens like a book for a double paneled treatment display

RESULTS

The reduction of wrinkles, fine lines, and crows feet are the hallmark of this light therapy device. My eleven lines appeared less deep and long even after a few uses. I find both eleven and smile lines look much smoother the day after I use the reVive DPL® IIa and my skin appears brighter.

I’m particularly happy with the ability to treat the eye area including crows feet, my undereye area gets a nice treatment of wrinkle reduction and lightening discoloration. The long-term ability to build collagen along the upper eyelid and browbone turns back time in a way that a topical eye cream alone cannot.

When I use the device at night before bed, my skin also has a lovely glow to it in the morning, I look more vibrant and awake, my skin tone seems more rosy and even.

Since using the device, I tend to use less foundation and concealer so the glow of my skin can shine through.

CONCLUSION

An outstanding addition to your at-home anti-aging arsenal, the reVive dpl® IIa – Professional Wrinkle Reduction and Acne Treatment Light Therapy provides powerful, professional quality results in an easy-to-use device that takes just minutes to use. This highly worthwhile investment treats face, throat, decolletage, and hands whenever you want.

This FDA-cleared, OTC Class II medical device is lightweight and covers the entire face at once for fast, even treatment. The three-light mode settings deliver precious collagen-building therapeutic light, which over the course of a few months, makes a meaningful difference in the strength, firmness, texture, and appearance of skin.
