Improve Dark Circles with BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector

December 30, 2020 · Leave a Comment

I’ve had dark circles since grade school. When I don’t wear concealer, my dark circles make concerned friends ask if I am sick or tired.  And even with concealer, I can never truly cover them.  If you suffer from dark circles, consider giving BeautyStat Universal Eye Perfector a try.
BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector

BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector

Dark circles are caused by many things: allergies, hereditary, facial structure, and leaking capillaries. Sun damage and discoloration makes all those problems look even worse.  Unfortunately, there isn’t much that can help dark circles.

But BeautyStat Universal Eye Perfector combines 5% Vitamin C with Hemp, Green Tea, Hyaluronic Acid, caffeine, and magnolia to get results.

In four weeks, 71% of users showed improvement in under-eye discoloration (dark circles)

The Research behind BeautyStat

In an independent clinical study, users were assessed with a Visia CR Imaging System. The results:

  • 90% showed improvement in crow’s feet, fine lines, and wrinkles.
  • 81% showed improvement in skin clarity.
  • 84% had improved skin brightness.
  • 71% showed improvement in under-eye discoloration (dark circles)

BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector Ingredients

How does this dark circle corrector work? Check out the ingredient list:

The Ingredients

Beauty Stat uses a stable form of Vitamin C for superior results

Beauty Stat uses a stable form of Vitamin C for superior results

Vitamin C

A potent 5% pure stabilized vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid). It is fresh and concentrated. L-ascorbic acid is a vitamin C that can be applied as a topical skin treatment.

Vitamin C is the only antioxidant proven to stimulate collagen production.

CBD Oil comes from Cannabis Sativa

Hemp Oil

Hemp Oil

Hemp Seed Oil is high in Omega-3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. It is also high in Vitamins A, E, and D.

Hemp Seed Oil comes from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. Hemp Seed Oil doesn’t contain the same compounds as the plant but has the nutrients and fatty acids.

It reduces acne while hydrating the skin. This helps soothe skin.

Flowering Camellia Sinensis

Flowering Camellia Sinensis or Green Tea

EGCG

EGCG comes from Green Tea. EGCG enables the production of new cells in the epidermis [1]. It contains phenols to strengthen collagen and elastin. This gives skin a bouncy, younger look while delaying wrinkles.

ECCG also soothes skin to help tolerate powerful actives like Vitamin C.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid retains moisture and increases the effectiveness of other ingredients.  Hyaluronic acid holds its’ weight in moisturizer. It holds so much moisture that it instantly plumps fine lines. It plumps the skin, making fine wrinkles and mild sagging temporarily disappear.

Caffeine

Caffeine has antioxidant properties and slows down photo-aging. Caffeine stimulates blood circulation and reduces puffiness.

It is particularly effective on firmness, reducing fine lines and crow’s feet.

Maximilian Passion Fruit Black Seed Oil Curly Hair Shampoo Conditioner Set

December 23, 2020 · 2 Comments

It is a good time for hair rehab. Curly hair is naturally dry and requires extra moisture. An excellent shampoo and conditioning duo to restore moisture into dry, damaged hair is Maximilian Passion Fruit Black Seed Oil Curly Hair Shampoo and Conditioner Set. It contains only gentle, moisturizing ingredients including Passionfruit Extract, Sweet Almond Oil, Panenthol, and Black Seed Oil.

Why curly hair Needs Moisture

Curly hair requires extra moisture

Curly hair is naturally drier. It has a wider diameter which leads to more surface moisture loss.  Our natural scalp oils have difficulty making their way down the spiral shape of a curl.

The shape of a curl also makes it extra brittle.

When curly hair is colored or styled straight with hot tools, it can easily damage already dry hair.

Many shampoos and even conditioners contain ingredients that dry out and damage curly hair. These include parabens, sulphates, silicones, and alcohols.

If you have curly hair, it is a great time to transition away from drying shampoos and conditioners in order to achieve lush, healthy, soft, and shiny curls.

A great haircare set for curly hair is Maximilian Passion Fruit Black Seed Oil Curly Hair Shampoo and Conditioner Set.

What Makes Maximilian Special

Maximilian ingredients are considered safe for curly hair

Both the shampoo and conditioner use natural, safe, curly friendly ingredients to infuse and lock in moisture.

Also important is what these products do NOT contain:

  • No Sulfate, Paraben, PEG, coloring, or gluten
  • No Silicone
  • No animal testing, cruelty-free

While these features are vital for curly hair, they are also beneficial to any texture hair that is dry, colored or damaged. Sulfates can be drying to even oily hair types. But this set uses three gentle cleansers considered safe for curly hair.

This volumizing formula makes hair healthier, it smooths the hair while imparting softness and shine. The ingredients work together to add moisture and then lock in that moisture.

Let’s take a closer look at these outstandingly curl-friendly ingredients.

Maximilian Supporting Ingredients

This shampoo and conditioner set uses exotic ingredients such as Passionfruit

Passion Fruit Extract

Passion fruit Extract contains hair restoring nutrients

Passion fruit Extract contains hair restoring nutrients

Passion fruit seed oil, also known as Maracuja Oil, is a Brazilian beauty mainstay. It improves how the hair looks and feels. It also benefits the health of the scalp. Healthy scalps are vital to growing healthy hair.

Passion fruit extract contains 72% linoleic acid, one of the richest sources of this hair-friendly essential acid. [1]  This gives hair a glossy, healthy shine.

It is rich in vitamin A, potassium, antioxidants, and minerals that benefit both hair and scalp. Vitamin C, riboflavin, carotene improves moisture retention. These antioxidants counteract the oxidative stress signs of hair aging [2]

Vitamin E improves dry hair and a dry scalp. It infuses moisture and retains it. This helps alleviate dandruff and restore dry, damaged hair.  Vitamins B6 and B2 aid scalp circulation. This benefits follicles and helps build stronger hair. Passion fruit extract also has anti-inflammatory benefits.

The vitamins in Passion fruit extract are amazing at locking in moisture without leaving the hair greasy or limp.

Sweet Almond Oil restores brittle hair

Sweet Almond Oil restores brittle hair

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet Almond Oil is hair reparative and softening.  Sweet Almond Oil is excellent for brittle hair, damaged hair, dry and over-processed hair.

Sweet almond oil contains proteins and vitamins A, B, D, and E, Omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, and magnesium. Amino acids and proteins strengthen the hair strand and smooth the appearance of the hair cuticle.  It nourishes and strengthens damaged hair, making it silky and shiny again. It also reduces hair loss and makes hair more elastic.

Sweet Almond Oil protects delicate hair strands and combats brittleness. Brittleness results in breakage and is a huge barrier to meaningful hair growth.

Almond Oil is also a carrier oil, meaning it helps other oils and ingredients penetrate and absorb.

Sweet Almond Oil also gives hair a natural sheen.

Black Seed Oil

Black Seed Oil comes from the seeds of the flower Nigella sativa

Black Seed Oil comes from the seeds of the flower Nigella sativa

Black Seed Oil is also known as Cumin Seed Oil. It comes from the seeds of the Nigella sativa, commonly called virgin in the green flower.

Rich in fatty amino acids, Black Seed Oil is moisturizing to both the hair and the scalp.

For scalp care, Black Seed Oil contains Thymoquinone. This is an excellent antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. It hydrates the scalp to keep it in optimal condition for growing healthy hair.  It combats scalp conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis, and other skin conditions  [3]

Black Seed Oil is called a hair growth remedy.  Studies of Telogen effluvium hair loss show topical Black Seed Oil reduces temporary hair loss. [4]

Black Cumin Oil works well with other ingredients to provide therapeutic effects.

Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

Panthenol is a humectant, emollient, and moisturizer. Panthenol is the alcohol analog of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and is a provitamin of B5.  It has ultra-hydrating properties. But unlike oils, it won’t make hair oily or greasy.

Panthenol penetrates the hair shaft and locks in moisture. It also retains moisture along the hair surface which reflects light for a shiny appearance. It also makes hair look and feels soft and pliable without oils or waxes. The sealed-in moisture plumps the hair shaft which gives the hair a more voluminous appearance.  It makes hair look healthier by boosting shine and plumping the hair shaft. More volume gives even damaged or thinning hair a healthier appearance. [5]

It is excellent for brittle hair and curly hair.  It washes clean from the hair without residue.  For very porous hair, it can behave like a protein.

Panthenol also moisturizes the skin on the scalp and is believed to promote cell regeneration.

Camellia Japonica Oil Ingredient Spotlight on Authentic Tsubaki

December 21, 2020 · Leave a Comment

We are featuring one of our favorite skincare beauty secrets: Camellia Japonica Oil.  Learn about this prized ancient beauty secret weapon for lush, sleek hair and dewy, youthful skin.

Camellia Japonica Oil is also known as Japanese Camellia, common camellia, or Tsubaki Camellia.  Tsubaki Camellia is the authentic Japanese Camellia seen in skincare ranges of brands such as Tatcha, Shiseido, and SK-II.

Camellia Japonica Oil is originally known as a prized, ancient Japanese beauty secret.   In writings and texts about traditional use, Camellia Japonica Oil is often referred to as Tsubaki. Geishas used Tsubaki Camellia to get silky, shiny hair and luminous, youthful, soft skin.

Camellia Japonica oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of this lovely bloom.  Camellia Japonica Oil is effective at transdermal collagen and elastin delivery.

Camellia Japonica

Camellia Japonica Oil comes from this lovely bloom.

Why We Love Camellia Japonica Oil

All camellia oil variants help skin, but Camilla Japonica oil is the real deal.

An excellent antioxidant and moisturizer, Camellia Japonica oil is rich in oleic acid, better known as Omega 9.  Omega 9 helps the skin retain hydration.

Camellia japonica oil also contains polyphenols, vitamins A, D, C, and E.

This non-comedogenic oil promotes skin elasticity.[1]

This variant of Camellia oil is the most effective at transdermal collagen and elastin delivery. Choose cold-pressed whenever possible.

Camellia Japonica is a pale golden lightweight oil.  It is similar to a hemi-squalene in its’ consistency. Because it feels light, it is easy to over-apply.

TIP: Only use a few drops and warm it in your hands before application. Pat, don’t rub onto skin.

It is a non-greasy and an excellent moisturizer but less is more when using authentic Japanese Camellia.

Tsubaki Camellia works wonders on dry, flat, dull hair. The fatty acids quickly absorb into the hair.

One bottle should last for quite some time. It only takes a few drops.

Locating Authentic Tsubaki

Authentic Camellia Japonica oil is elusive to procure but worth the effort.  There are three kinds of camellia oil.  All three benefit the skin, but authentic Tsubaki will only appear on the product ingredient label as Tsubaki or Tsubaki Camellia but more often as Camellia Japonica Oil or Japanese Camellia.

The following are skin-enhancing Camellia Oils, but not the authentic Tsubaki you want for the most skin benefits:

  • Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil smooths rough skin patches and repairs the skin barrier. It also smoothes hair in a conditioner or leave-in serum.
  • Camelia Sinensis is the leaves of green and white tea. It is an anti-inflammatory anti-oxidant with EGCG. EGCG enables the production of new cells in the epidermis [2].  Impressive, but not the collagen and elastin production powerhouse of genuine Camellia Japonica Oil.

Once you have procured authentic Tsubaki, here is how to use it on skin and hair:

How to Use Camellia Japonica Oil on the Hair

A wood comb helps distribute the oil without snagging hair

A wood comb helps distribute the Tsubaki oil without snagging hair

Tsubaki can be applied to wet or dry hair to serve as a conditioning treatment or styling agent. It is traditionally distributed through the hair with a Tsuge wooden comb. As seen in the photo, there are no sharp edges that can snag or damage the hair. The Tsubaki oil also conditions the wood, giving it a beautiful luster and depth to the grain.

Camellia Japonica Oil Leave-In Hair Treatment

For leave-in hair treatments, apply the oil to wet hair after washing. Allow hair to dry wrapped in a towel or air dry as much as possible. Comb after drying to distribute the oil.

Tsubaki Camellia for Hair Shine and Finishing

Tsubaki Camellia can be used on dry hair as a finishing treatment. It creates a lovely high sheen.

Our best tip for finishing hair with Tsubaki is to start with the least amount of oil you can dispense from the bottle.

Dispense just a few drops, even for long hair. Always warm Japanese Camellia Japonica oil between the palms. Spread on dry hair using the palm of the hands. Comb through with a Tsuge wooden comb if possible. Concentrate on the dry ends of the hair, and the comb will transfer the oils to the rest of the hair to evenly distribute.

Comb it through, and only add more Tsubaki as needed. Very little Camellia Japonica oil goes a long way.  A dropper full is way too much.  Practice plenty and count how many drops you dispense to hone your ideal amount for the next use.

Tsubaki creates a lovely healthy sheen to the hair while providing conditioning benefits.

How to Use Camellia Japonica on the Skin

Care of the skin was a ritual with this ancient beauty secret: none of the rubbing, scrubbing, or squeezing we tend to subject our skin to today. The skin was treated like an inherited gift that required the investment of time and effort to care for the skin, especially on face, throat, decolletage and hands.

Camellia japonica is a highly moisturizing and anti-aging skincare oil

Camellia japonica oil is a highly moisturizing and anti-aging skincare oil

Camellia oil absorbs very quickly. It permeates deep into lower layers of skin, promoting cell growth, and giving skin support and flexibility.

HOW TO APPLY CAMELLIA JAPONICA OIL TO SKIN:

Dispense a few drops of oil, rub your palms together.

PAT the oil over your face and neck, don’t rub!

Spread the oil in small circular motions in a gentle massage until it is absorbed.

It can be applied directly to a pimple, wrinkles, and crow’s feet.  Camellia Japonica Oil can be used to treat eczema and dry patches.

Rice Bran Oil and Tsubaki

These oils are both wonderful for hair and skin but they work better when not mixed together.  Apply Tsubaki first and allow it ample time to absorb. Follow with Rice Bran Oil if desired.

Camellia Japonica Fast Facts

Camellia Japonica

Camellia Japonica Oil is extracted from the seeds of this lovely bloom. Camellia Japonica means shiny green leaf, denoting its’ foliage.

Tsubaki is:

  • the authentic form of oil traditionally used as a beauty secret of Geishas.
  • suitable for hair and skin
  • anti-oxidant
  • moisturizing
  • rich in skin-hydrating fatty acid Omega 9
  • restores bounce and elasticity to the skin
  • contains polyphenols, Vitamins A, D, C, and E
  • non-comedogenic
  • promotes collagen and elastin production
  • non-greasy
  • fast-absorbing

Retinol Alternative: Morganna’s Alchemy 24K Glow Super Cream

December 15, 2020 · 4 Comments

Retinol calls to me like a skincare siren. This gold standard skincare ingredient quells acne, age spots, and wrinkles. It leaves skin dewy, refined, refreshed, and younger. But before the dewy, youthy, fabulous skin phase, there’s the dreaded irritated skin phase. And for the sensitive-skinned amongst us, that phase is torture. Many can’t tolerate even buffered Retinols. What options are there for sensitive skins seeking serums? Meet Bakuchiol, a non-irritating, plant-based retinol alternative. It behaves like Retinol without the skin irritation.  An excellent implementation of Bakuchiol comes in 24K Glow Super Cream by Morganna’s Alchemy. Check out the research behind these ingredients and our 24K Glow experience.

Why 24K Glow Super Cream is Special

24K Glow Super Cream by Morganna's Alchemy revitalizes and moisturizes the skin.

24K Glow Super Cream by Morganna’s Alchemy revitalizes and moisturizes the skin.

24K Glow Super Cream uses natural, effective ingredients that are gentle to the skin. It addresses acne, dark spots, and wrinkles.

24K Glow Super Cream combines two non-irritating skincare superstars: Bakuchiol and Astaxanthin. Together, they match retinol benefits and offer collagen AND elastin support.  24K Glow Super Cream has skin nourishing, hydrating, collagen-promoting yet gentle ingredients.

But every ingredient claims it is wonderful. What’s the proof?

Clinical Research

The skincare showdown: Bakuchiol vs Retinol

Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is a plant-based phenol that decreases wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Studies show that gentle, natural bakuchiol holds its’ own against Retinol.

Retinol looks emollient but dries the skin, whereas bakuchiol hydrates

Retinol looks emollient but dries the skin, whereas bakuchiol hydrates

“Our study demonstrates that bakuchiol is comparable with retinol in its ability to improve photoaging and is better tolerated than retinol.” [1]

One randomized, double-blind, 12-week clinical study with 44 volunteers compared retinol and bakuchiol. There was no statistical difference between how each decreased wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. But the retinol users reported facial skin scaling and stinging. [2]

A second study confirmed the Retinol-like functionality of bakuchiol. It also documented the stimulation of collagen within the skin. Bakuchiol was used twice a day for 12 weeks. The result was a significant improvement in wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, and firmness without the retinol associated side effects. [3]

Bakuchiol inhibits melanin production on age spots and acne scars better than arbutin [4]. Bakuchiol also helps with acne.[5]

What makes Bakuchiol even better?
Pairing it with Astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin

24k Glow Super Cream uses Haematococcus Pluvalis Algae as an Astaxanthin source

24k Glow Super Cream uses Haematococcus Pluvalis Algae as an Astaxanthin source

Astaxanthin is an exceptional anti-oxidant.

Many topicals use a chemically synthesized Astaxanthin. But 24K Glow Super Cream uses natural Astaxanthin.  Natural Astaxanthin is derived from Haematococcus Pluvalis Extract, a freshwater species of algae. [6]

Anti-oxidants are important because oxidative stress causes dermal damage resulting in skin aging.

Natural aging and photoaging (UV light) produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS ages skin by causing an inflammatory response. [7] This degrades skin collagen and elastin.

Astaxanthin is especially effective at preventing ROS formations in the skin. [8]

Astaxanthin protects skin from the free radical damage that accelerates skin aging. It counteracts UV damage and improves elasticity via improved skin function. It promotes collagen production. [9]

Astaxanthin suppresses hyperpigmentation and photoaging. It also reduces wrinkle formation in several clinical studies [10].

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant, more potent and stable than Vitamins C or E.

Morganna’s Alchemy 24K Glow Super Cream also contains a host of natural but highly effective ingredients to counteract skin aging and support skin hydration. Let’s take a closer look at the other ingredients in this formulation:

Olives are a natural Squalane source

Squalane

Squalane comes from olives oil, rice, or sugar cane.

Rich in fatty acids, it contains all the restorative goodness of olive oil without the greasiness. Squalane mimics the skin’s natural sebum and makes the skin barrier smooth and soft.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is from palm kernel or coconut oil. It is a mix of fatty acids attached to glycerin.  It is a natural skin replenishing emollient that creates a barrier on the skin’s surface to reduce moisture loss. [11]

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is a non-synthesized form of Hyaluronic Acid. It is a humectant that offers stronger moisture retention properties than regular HA. It is found naturally and ample supply in young skin, but depletes with age.

Sodium Hyaluronate has a lower molecular size than to other Hyaluronic Acids. This is good because it can absorb deeper into the skin and bring other actives along with it.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a natural vegetable-derived, non-toxic humectant that helps the skin to retain moisture.  Glycerin fills in gaps in dryer skin which makes skin look better and keeps the outer layer of the skin intact.

Tocopherol

Tocopherol is a natural Vitamin E is from plant seeds. It is a skin-softening antioxidant that makes damaged skin (scars, sun-damaged) pliable.  Once the skin is pliable, other treating ingredients can work their magic.

Hydrolyzed Collagen

Collagen is the scaffolding of skin. We lose it as we age. Less collagen means more sagging. Hydrolyzed Collagen is broken down into smaller pieces to penetrate the skin.

Hydrolyzed Royal Jelly Protein

Royal Jelly is the gelatinous substance bees make to feed the queen bee. Royal Jelly is an anti-inflammatory anti-oxidant filled with skin-friendly nutrients. It smooths fine lines and wrinkles and enables skin repair. [12]  Royal Jelly can promote collagen production. [13]

My Experience

24K Glow Super Cream is a sleek, sealed product with an enclosed pump top dispenser.

The cream itself is an apricot shade, but it doesn’t impart any actual tint to the skin. It is a creamy gel consistency.

The texture is not at all gritty like some Retinol prescription gels. It absorbs and spreads easily without tugging the skin. It dries down within a minute. I give an extra minute before sunscreen application but it is not tacky or gummy.

There is a pleasant almost sweet spicy scent that dissipates on the dry down.

The skin has a bit of a glow afterward but not greasy looking. My skin feels smooth and appears hydrated with or without additional moisturizer application.

RESULTS

I have used it twice a day for 11 days.  And so far no dreadful skin peeling days that I can’t wear makeup on my skin.  No days that my skin is so raw that my sunscreen stings. No skipping a topical treatment day because my skin is just too red and irritated.  It is early but my skin looks more even and refined.

Notably, unlike by day ten of Retinol use, my skin is hydrated and smooth.

The Experiment

Structurally, bakuchiol is nothing like retinol. But…I still wondered if an excessive application would irritate my skin like retinol can. So I deliberately over-did it a few nights in a row to see what would happen.

I zealously applied it before bed expecting to wake up with a red face. Unlike Retinol, I did not wake up red and irritated, and my skin was not tight or itchy feeling. It looked smooth and hydrated, even without applying moisturizer. When I applied 24k Glow in the morning, it did not sting and my skin was not tight.

what We Love

Unlike Retinol, 24K Glow can be used on areas too sensitive for retinol. I can use it around my mouth, on the under-eye area, and on crow’s feet.

And while Retinol shouldn’t be worn during the day, this bakuchiol-based product is safe to use both day and night.

Studies show bakuchiol results are seen in 12 weeks. So far, so good!
